A polymeric material has a repeat unit of formula &#x2014;O-Ph-O-Ph-CO-Ph- I and a repeat unit of formula &#x2014;O-Ph-Ph-O-Ph-CO-Ph- II wherein Ph represents a phenylene moiety; wherein the repeat units I and II are in the relative molar properties I:II of from 65:35 to 95:5; wherein log(X %)&#x3e;1.50-0.26 MV; wherein X % refers to the % crystallinity measured as described in Example 31 and MV refers to the melt viscosity measured as described in Example 30. A process for making the polymeric material comprises polycondensing a mixture of at least one dihydroxybenzene compound and at least one dihydroxybiphenyl compound in the molar proportions 65:35 to 95:5 with at least one dihalobenzophenone in the presence of sodium carbonate and potassium carbonate wherein: (i) the mole % of said potassium carbonate is at least 2.5 and/or (ii) the following relationship applies 

Polymeric materials

A polymeric material has a repeat unit of formula &#x2014;O-Ph-O-Ph-CO-Ph-I and a repeat unit of formula &#x2014;O-Ph-Ph-O-Ph-CO-Ph-II wherein Ph represents a phenylene moiety; wherein the repeat units I and II are in the relative molar properties I:II of from 65:35 to 95:5; wherein log(X %)&#x3e;1.50-0.26 MV; wherein X % refers to the % crystallinity and MV refers to the melt viscosity. A process for making the polymeric material is also disclosed.

Polymers comprising polyetheretheretherketone and polyetherdiphenyletherketone and polymers comprising polyetheretheretherketone and polyetheretherethersulphone are described which have advantageous Tn and/or Tg properties.

A polyaryletherketone polymeric material, for example polyetheretherketone and composite materials comprising said polymeric material are described. The polymeric material has a melt viscosity (MV) in the range 0.05 to 0.12 kNsm, preferably in the range 0.085 to 0.095 kNsm.

Polymeric ketone

A polymeric material includes phenyl moieties, ketone moieties and ether moieties in the polymeric backbone of said polymeric material, wherein the difference between the nucleation temperature (Tn) and the glass transition temperature (Tg) of said polymeric material is greater than 23&#xb0; C.

Polymeric material

A three-dimensional object is manufactured from a powder of polymer material by selective sintering process by means of electromagnetic radiation of the powder, wherein the powder comprises a preselected polymer or copolymer and is subjected to selective sintering such that the manufactured three-dimensional object has a final crystallinity which is in such a range that the balance of properties, in particular mechanical properties including Young's modulus, tensile strength and elongation at break, is improved.

A method of making a polymeric material is described, the method comprising contacting, for example polycondensing, a compound of formula with a compound of formula wherein each X is selected from a group comprising a chlorine and a fluorine atom, n represents 1, 2 or 3 and each Yis selected from a group comprising an alkali metal and a hydrogen atom.

A polymer electrolyte membrane or gas diffusion electrode includes an ion-conducting polymeric material which includes moieties of formula (A) which are substituted on average with more than 1 and 3 or fewer groups (e.g. sulphonate groups) which provide ion-exchange sites and hydrogen atoms of said moieties are optionally substituted, wherein each X in said moieties of formula A independently represent an oxygen or sulphur atom. The ion conducting polymeric material is suitably prepared by controllably sulphonating a polymeric material using about 100% sulphuric acid at 34&#xb0; C. to 36&#xb0; C. 

A polyaryletherketone polymeric material, for example polyetheretherketone and composite materials comprising said polymeric material are described. The polymeric material has a melt viscosity (MV) in the range 0.05 to 0.12 kNsmpreferably in the range 0.085 to 0.095 kNsm.

A composition comprises a first polymeric material having a melt viscosity of 0.15 kNsmor less and liquid crystal polymer. The first polymeric material is preferably a polyaryletherketone. A composite material which comprises high levels of fillers in combination with the aforementioned composition is also described.

There is described a fuel cell or electrolytic cell comprising an ion-conductive polymeric material which includes a first repeat unit of formula (I): &#x2014;(O-Ph-CO-Ph-O-Ph-CO-Ph)-, and a second repeat unit of formula (II): &#x2014;(O-Ph-O-Ph-CO-Ph)-, or of formula (III): (O-Ph-O-Ph-SO-Ph)-; wherein Ph, Ph, Phand Phindependently represent phenyl moieties and wherein said second repeat unit is provided with ion-exchange sites. The polymeric material may include a third repeat unit which is amorphous.

Cells

A fuel cell powered by direct fuel, for example a direct methanol fuel cell, includes a polymer electrolyte membrane which includes a semi-crystalline polymer. Preferred semi-crystalline polymers include first repeat units comprising sulphonated aromatic group containing moieties linked by &#x2014;SO&#x2014; and/or &#x2014;CO&#x2014; and/or -Q-groups, where Q is O or S and second repeat units which include aromatic group containing moieties linked by &#x2014;CO&#x2014; and/or Q groups.

Fuel cell

Method of purifying a polymeric material of a type which includes (A) phenyl moieties; (B) carbonyl and/or sulphone moieties; and; (C) ether and/or thioether moieties. The method includes contacting the polymeric material with a solvent formulation which is at a temperature of greater than 100&#xb0; C. and a pressure above ambient pressure thereby to charge the solvent formulation with impurities derived from the polymeric material, and separating the charged solvent from the polymeric material.
