A new and improved method and apparatus for use in conjunction with the free floating paving screed used for road paving is disclosed. The method of forming a bituminous mixture into a smooth flat paved mat comprising some areas with a given nominal mat density and some selected areas with a predeterminedly higher mat density is described wherein problems posed by a reduced compaction ratio occurring subsequently to paving the mat where the roller drum bridges over recesses in the subbase are addressed. The modified paving screed described employs a new adjustable screed plate that allows localized areas of increased angle of attack and a device to increased material entry density in localized areas in front of a screed plate leading edge. Either method is used to create an increase in mat density in the desired area. The method and apparatus teach that by pairing differences in compaction ratio that inherently occur due to subbase irregularities with correspondingly predetermined and different mat densities in the paved mat, a good consistent final density can be achieved notwithstanding the limitations of the compaction rolling. A forward looking vision system is described that identifies subbase recesses, a digital controller quantifies the density increase required, and a GPS system maps locations where the mat density increases are to be applied.

Screed assembly for road paving machines, and a method for repaving road surfaces

A sample cell insertion and removal apparatus for an analysis instrument, including a horizontally sliding frame; a sample cell carriage movably mounted to the sliding frame, the sample cell carriage including an area to hold a sample cell; wherein upon sliding into and out of the instrument, the sample cell carriage is moved horizontally and vertically into and out of an analysis position. This instrument may include a radiation shielded enclosure into and out of which the apparatus slides, and an x-ray analysis engine which transmits x-rays upwards towards the sample cell which projects from a bottom of the apparatus. The disclosed sample cell is especially suited for an x-ray analysis engine having a focal spot requiring alignment with the sample in the sample cell.

Sliding sample cell insertion and removal apparatus for x-ray analyzer

A method and apparatus for inserting wicks into candles formed in jars or containers characterized by a device comprised of a hollow tube, sealed on one end, in which a wick and wick base can snugly fit, and a crosspiece having width greater than width of the mouth of a jar so that after candle wax is poured, the wick straightening device is inserted into the jar and is removed after the wax has cooled so that the wick will remain straight even after the candle wax has cooled.

A shielded sample cell insertion and removal apparatus for an x-ray analysis instrument, including a sample cell setting to hold a sample cell, an outer surface of which exposes the sample to an x-ray engine; and a shielded area positioned over the sample cell, to shield an area beyond the sample cell from x-rays transmitted from the x-ray engine. Upon moving the apparatus into and out of the instrument, the sample cell is moved into and out of an analysis position, while retaining shielding of areas beyond the sample cell from x-rays transmitted from the x-ray engine of the instrument.

Shielded sample cell insertion and removal apparatus for X-ray analyzer

A whip-style boat mooring apparatus, removably attachable to a standard dock cleat. The apparatus may include a second cleat, such that the apparatus provides both whip-style and standard cleat mooring from a single dock point. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a clam-shell type housing, with a profile substantially resembling the dock cleat, such that the apparatus can be clamped to the dock cleat and prevent rotational movement. The housing may include two opposing pieces, attachable to respective sides of the dock cleat. The housing may include a rotatably adjustable means for attaching a whip socket onto the housing.

A method and device for cooling and electrically-insulating a high-voltage, heat-generating component, for example, an x-ray tube () for analyzing fluids by means of x-ray fluorescence. The device includes an x-ray source () including an x-ray tube () having improved heat-dissipating properties due to the thermal coupling of the x-ray tube with a thermally-conductive, dielectric material (). The device may include a base assembly () mounted to the component for conducting heat away from the component while electrically isolating the component. In one aspect of the invention, the base assembly includes two copper plates () separated by a dielectric plate (). The dielectric plate minimizes or prevents the leakage of current through the base assembly (). One aspect of the disclosed invention is most amenable to the analysis of sulfur in petroleum-based fuels.

Method and device for cooling and electrically insulating a high voltage, heat-generating component such as an x-ray tube for analyzing fluid streams

An x-ray source assembly and method of operation are provided having enhanced output stability. The assembly includes an anode having a source spot upon which electrons impinge and a control system for controlling position of the anode source spot relative to an output structure. The control system can maintain the anode source spot location relative to the output structure notwithstanding a change in one or more operating conditions of the x-ray source assembly. One aspect of the disclosed invention is most amenable to the analysis of sulfur in petroleum-based fuels.

X-ray source assembly having enhanced output stability, and fluid stream analysis applications thereof

A configurable fibre channel (FC) loop system is provided that may be used to couple mass storage devices to input/output (I/O) controllers in a data storage system. The system may include first and second port bypass systems (PBPS). Each PBPS may include FC protocol network sections having nodes that may be configured into different numbers of loops that may be used to couple the devices to the controllers.

Configurable fibre channel loop system

A technique is disclosed for presenting a sample to a radiation interface of an analysis engine employing x-ray, neutron ray, gamma ray or particle-beam radiation to analyze the sample. A protective barrier, transparent to the radiation, and separating the sample from the engine, is moveable relative to the radiation interface, using a barrier movement system. The barrier in one embodiment is a film movable over a cavity in which the sample placed, and moveable with a system of reels to provide and retrieve a generally continuous supply of film over the cavity. The cavity may form a portion of a sample path through which the sample is moveable. If the sample path is pressurized, the film maintains the pressure during analysis of the sample by the analysis engine.

A technique for analyzing fluids by means of x-ray fluorescence applicable to any fluid, including liquids and gases, which emit x-ray fluorescence when exposed to x-rays. The apparatus includes an x-ray source () including an x-ray tube () having improved heat dissipating properties due to a thermally-conductive, dielectric material (). The x-ray tube also includes means for aligning () the tube with the source housing whereby the orientation of the x-ray beam produced by the source can be optimized, and stabilized over various operating conditions. The method and apparatus may also include an x-ray detector having a small-area, for example, a PIN-diode type semiconductor x-ray detector (), that can provide effective x-ray detection at room temperature. One aspect of the disclosed invention is most amenable to the analysis of sulfur in petroleum-based fuels.

X-ray tube and method and apparatus for analyzing fluid streams using x-rays

A data storage interface for coupling data between processors and a bank of disk. The interface includes a plurality of first directors coupled to the processors and a plurality of second directors coupled to the bank of disk drives. A cache memory is coupled between the plurality of first directors and the plurality of second directors. The interface includes a pair of independent power busses. At least one of the first or second directors is coupled to the pair of independent power busses. One portion of the disk drives in the bank is connected to only a first one of the pair of power buses and a different portion of the disk drives is connected to only the other one of the pair of power buses. A power circuit includes a pair of input terminals, each one being electrically connected to a corresponding one of the pair of independent power busses. The circuit includes an output terminal. A pair of switching transistor sections is provided. The transistor switching sections is serially connected between a corresponding one of the pair of input terminals and the output terminal. A logic network is provided for operating the switching sections to prevent current passing into one of the pair of input terminals from one of the power busses from passing into the other one of the power buses. The logic section operates the switching sections to prevent current from one of the pair of power buses to the one of the input terminals connected thereto from exceeding a predetermined value, and operates the switching sections to prevent a difference between a voltage at one of the input terminals and a voltage at the other one of the input terminals from exceeding a predetermined value.

Dual power bus data storage system

A cabinet having a plurality of rack mountable chassis. One portion of such chassis has directors and electrically interconnected memory and another portion of such chassis having a plurality of disk drives. The plurality of chassis are electrically interconnected to provide a data storage system interface. The another portion of the cabinets includes therein a printed circuit board having plugged into a surface thereof a plurality of disk drives. The cabinet includes a plurality of rack mountable chassis. A first one of such chassis has a memory and a plurality of directors for controlling data transfer between a host computer/server and a bank of disk drives as such data passes through the memory. A first plurality of the directors are for coupling to the host computer/server. A second plurality of the directors are for coupling to a bank of disk drives. A second one of such chassis has a plurality of disk drives, such disk drives being plugged into a surface of a printed circuit board. Electrical conductors are provided for connecting the disk drives in the second chassis to the second plurality of directors in the first chassis.

Disk drive system for a data storage system

A method and system for producing a data storage system for transferring data between a host computer/server and a bank of disk drives through a system interface. The system interface has a plurality of first directors, a plurality of second directors, and a global memory. The method includes: providing a backplane having slots adapted to have plugged therein a plurality of printed circuit board. The printed circuit boards include: a plurality of first director boards having the first directors; a plurality of second printed circuit boards having the second directors; a plurality of memory printed circuit boards providing the global memory; a plurality of dummy first director boards having first jumpers; a plurality of dummy second director boards having second jumpers; a plurality of dummy memory boards having third jumpers. The method includes wiring the backplane to effect a connection among the first, second and third jumpers to interconnect the first plurality of director to the host computer/server, the plurality of second plurality of directors to the bank of disk drives and the global memory to the first plurality of directors and to the second plurality of director. The method and system allows the same wired backplane to be used with systems having a different number of memory and director boards and still enable dual-write and redundancy to the global memory.
