An article identification system relies upon correlating or 'bonding' a detecting object with an identifying object on an auto-identification basis. Identification data is provided on an automated, high-reliability basis, without human control over the precise identification data that is transferred. On this basis a nursery infant-parent identifier system is provided whereby, when a detecting baby bracelet is brought into the presence of an identifying parent's tag, a reliable indication is provided as to whether the bracelet and tag have been previously bonded.

A method of detecting a variable number of objects within range of a receiver, is comprised of transmitting from each object a supervisory message from time to time, detecting the supervisory message by the receiver over a detection interval, and varying the detection interval based on a number of objects under supervision and the probability of collisions of the supervisory messages.

Method of detecting objects within range of a receiver

A security tag having a strap for securing the tag to an object to be protected and an electronic module connected to the strap for detecting an attempt to defeat the tag by short circuiting and severing the strap. The strap is formed of plural discrete conductors connected to the electronic module, which conductors are insulated from each other at least along a substantial length of the strap. Short circuiting of opposite ends of a single pair of the conductors followed by severance of plural ones of the insulated conductors, or short circuit in between separate conductors can be detected by the electronic module as an alarm condition. Severance or misconnection of only one or a small number of the insulated conductors can be detected by the electronic module as not being an alarm condition.

Multiple conductor security tag

A beacon is contained in a waterproof housing which is devoid of any electrical contact points. At a location at which a signal is to be applied to or received from the beacon, the housing is made sufficiently thin to allow light to pass therethrough. A light energy transmitter coupled to receive the signal to be transmitted into or out of the housing is located immediately adjacent or abutted against the translucent portion of the housing. A light energy receiver is similarly disposed adjacent or abutted against the other side of the housing, to receive the light energy. In this manner no electrical contacts need pass through the housing, and the beacon circuit is entirely protected by the waterproof housing, from water, soap, sweat, body oils, etc.
