Various embodiments include methods and apparatus structured to install an optical fiber cable into a well at a well site. In a from-bottom-to-top embodiment, an anchor deployed at a selected location in a hole of the well can be used and the optical fiber cable can be pulled up to a surface of the well from the selected location. In a from-top-to-bottom embodiment, an optical fiber cable can be moved down from the surface until an end of the optical fiber cable is locked at a selected location by a catcher disposed at the selected location. With the optical fiber cable in the well, a portion of the optical fiber cable can be coupled to surface instrumentation. Additional apparatus, systems, and methods can be implemented in a variety of applications.

Downhole fiber installation equipment and method

A method of perforating a wellbore is provided. The method includes generating a shockwave that propagates throughout said wellbore by firing a perforation device at a perforating direction, and measuring the shockwave at a fiber optic cable in the wellbore using the fiber optic cable. The method further includes determining an orientation of the fiber optic cable relative to the perforating direction based on the shockwave and the perforating direction, and changing the perforating direction based on the orientation of said the optic cable for a subsequent perforation of the wellbore to minimize damage to the fiber optic cable during the subsequent perforation. The fiber optic cable is an existing cable that has been deployed before the method starts.

A method of assembling an optical fiber cable on production casing includes positioning the optical fiber cable against a production casing at a hole of a well site, and affixing the optical fiber cable against the production casing by applying an adhesive to the production casing to secure the optical fiber cable against the production casing. The method further includes applying pressure to the adhesive to adhesively bond the optical fiber cable to the production casing along a length of the production casing while the production casing is being run-in-hole.

Aspects of the subject technology relate to systems and methods for deploying fiber optic lines in a wellbore using a fiber optic deployment device. The device can include at least one fiber optic spool forming a canister. The canister can be operable to self-propel through at least a portion of the wellbore. Each of the at least one fiber optic spool can comprising one or more fiber optic lines. Each of the one or more fiber optic lines can be coupled to a bridge plug at a first end and coupled to a cable at a second end opposite the first end. The device can include a sleeve covering the at least one fiber optic spool.

System and method for deploying fiber optics lines in a wellbore

A system of translatable electro acoustic technology (EAT) modules for deployment along an oil or gas wellbore casing includes: a wireline/slickline optical distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) cable deployed from the surface into the casing and connected to a surface interrogator; a tractor attached to the downhole end of the wireline/slickline optical distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) cable; and one or more EAT sensing modules that can be coupled to or decoupled from the wireline/slickline optical distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) cable at pre-selected locations and can either be coupled to or decoupled from the casing of the wellbore or be allowed to reposition along the wellborn casing, wherein the one or more EAT sensing modules can conduct multiple measurements and communicate the results via the wireline/slickline optical distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) cable to the surface interrogator.

Translatable eat sensing modules and associated measurement methods

A new approach to pipeline pigging using electro acoustic technology (EAT) is described in which the data from a pigging operation can be transmitted in real time to optical fiber on the outside of the pipeline and detected using distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) techniques, including the precise location, velocity and acceleration of the pig using the DAS technique. Thus the sensor data can easily be mapped to its precise location in real time. The EAT sensors use the DAS fiber as a data transmission line by converting electrical or optical signals to acoustic signals which excite the fiber and can be detected by an interrogator at the pig launch site.

An electro acoustic technology (EAT) based micro seismic sensor and tiltmeter system and method is described for the measurement of minute deformations in downhole formations caused by hydraulic fracturing or other sources of pore pressure changes. A number of sensor arrays are described that are installed in clamp-on EAT devices installed in tool wells located in close proximity to hydraulically fractured wells.

Disclosed are pump-down sensor devices that operate in conjunction with a fiber-optic sensing system to take downhole measurements and communicate them to the surface while moving untethered through a borehole. A pump-down sensor device in accordance with various embodiments includes one or more flow baffles configured for a specified buoyancy, and an electronics module for measuring one or more downhole parameters and transmitting an acoustic signal encoding the measured parameter(s). The acoustic signal can be detected using the fiber-optic sensing system. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Electroacoustic pump-down sensor

A downhole sensor deployment assembly includes a body attachable to a completion string and one or more arms pivotably coupled to the body. A sensor pad is coupled to each arm and movable from a retracted position, where the sensor pad is stowed adjacent the completion string, and an actuated position, where the sensor pad is extended radially away from the completion string. One or more actuators are pivotably coupled to the body at a first end and pivotably coupled to a corresponding one of the one or more arms at a second end, the one or more actuators being operable to move the sensor pad to the actuated position. One or more sensor devices are coupled to the sensor pad for determining a resistivity of a formation, the one or more sensor devices comprising at least one of a sensing electrode, a transceiver, and a transmitter.

Downhole sensor deployment assembly

A system for launching or retrieving wireline electro acoustic technology (EAT) sensor assemblies in a downhole wellbore comprises an EAT launcher/retriever section and an EAT sensor assembly for placement in the EAT launcher/retriever section. The EAT launcher/retriever section comprises an external high pressure housing, attachment means at each end of the external high pressure housing, and a wedge shaped internal retractable launcher plate with an opening on one side to allow a fiber based wireline cable to pass through the EAT launcher section. The EAT sensor assembly comprises a center section comprising sensors and two end sections, each end section with a set of extendable grippers to grip a fiber based wireline cable, wherein the center section and both end sections comprise a V groove that allows the EAT sensor assembly to be centered on the fiber based wireline cable.

Example apparatus, methods, and systems are described for performing bottom hole measurements in a downhole environment. In an example system, a bridge plug is deployed at a downhole location of a cased well, An optical fiber cable is deployed exterior to the casing of the well. The bridge plug includes a sensor and an acoustic signal generator, which transmits acoustic signals through the casing to the optical fiber cable.

A modular sensor system using electro acoustic technology to measure downhole properties, such as flow rate, density and fluid fraction of oil in a production string, is described. Modular sensor assemblies inside a wellbore collect various local fluid parameters at each location. The local fluid parameters are combined to determine the downhole properties.

Example systems and methods are described for performing multilateral well sensing in a downhole environment. In an example system, a cased parent wellbore and a cased lateral wellbore intersect at a lateral junction. A sensor is deployed within the cased lateral wellbore that communicably couples to a transmitter module, wherein the transmitter module is deployed within the cased lateral wellbore downhole of the lateral junction and configured to generate acoustic signals. An optical fiber cable is deployed within the cased parent wellbore and configured to receive acoustic signals transmitted by the transmitter module in the cased lateral wellbore.
