A circuit interrupting device comprises a conductor capable of generating heat and a temperature-activated, permanent lock out trip mechanism. The mechanism includes a plunger, a compressed or stretched spring and a fusible metal to hold the plunger. The mechanism is located near the conductor that generates heat and is configured such that when the fusible metal melts when at least one heating element is energized or a holding wire fuses when energized in response to a failed self-test the plunger is released: allowing the compressed or stretched spring to convert its potential energy into kinetic energy and moving the plunger to generate a force to unlatch a latch releasing a first spring to open a contactor switch removing power from an electrical circuit. The constant force generated by the compressed or stretched spring on the plunger inhibits the circuit interrupting device from resetting.

A residential circuit breaker is provided with means for showing proper installation of a panel wire to ensure that an installer/a contractor is aware that the panel wire has been fully inserted into a circuit breaker lug. The residential circuit breaker comprises a circuit breaker lug having a lug body and a lug body screw. The residential circuit breaker further comprises a panel wire install indicator to indicate proper insertion of a panel wire in the lug body by providing a visual indication to an installer/contractor that the panel wire has been fully inserted in the circuit breaker lug during and after installation. The panel wire install indicator includes a panel wire indicator lever wherein the panel wire indicator lever can indicate if the panel wire has been installed properly and wherein there is a visual indication if the panel wire is no longer present in the lug body.

An arc shield apparatus for an electrical switching device. Arc shield apparatus includes a body having an abutting portion including a first side configured to abut against a lateral side of a contact arm of an electrical switching device, and a second side opposite from the first side, an aperture passing between the first and second side, the aperture configured to receive a spring tab of the contact arm therein, and an arc shield including a first shield portion extending from the first abutting portion, the first shield portion including a first contact surface configured to abut against a contact arm edge, and a second shield portion configured to shield at least some of the spring tab and spring hook. A multi-pole circuit interrupter configured to be coupled between an AC source and an electric load electronically detects a hazardous condition associated with energizing of poles and responds to overcome the hazardous condition using a solenoid. The multi-pole circuit interrupter comprises a first switch to energize a first pole on a phase A conductor of the multi-pole circuit interrupter and a second switch to energize a second pole on a phase B conductor of the multi-pole circuit interrupter. The multi-pole circuit interrupter further comprises an electronic solid-state circuit coupled to the phase A conductor and the phase B conductor to detect a line voltage variation and control a current to a device in response to trip an energized pole among the first pole and the second pole if only one of the first pole and the second pole is energized when a user controls a tie bar to turn ON or turn OFF the multi-pole circuit interrupter or when a trip bar fails to trip one of the first pole and the second pole.

Monitoring and responding to an abnormal condition associated with energizing of poles of a circuit breaker

Certain exemplary embodiments comprise a bimetal restraint adapted to restrain a bimetal of a circuit breaker from deformation beyond a predetermined threshold during a short circuit event. In certain exemplary embodiments, the bimetal restraint can be adapted to act as a shunt during the short circuit event to transfer electrical energy from an electrical energy source to a load side of the circuit breaker.

Devices, systems, and methods for shunting a circuit breaker

A multi-pole handle lock having a base plate and movable locking plate assembly that is adapted to mount on to at least two circuit breakers. A handle restrictor plate is mounted on the base plate for translational movement while maintaining the circuit breaker handles in the same position as each other. The handle restrictor plate allows each handle to independently move to the tripped position, while allowing the restricted circuit breakers to operate as a logical group. The present invention is also directed to a novel a modular circuit breaker with a trip bar. The modular breaker design includes an electronic system used for tripping a designated mechanism pole which in turn trips the secondary mechanism pole. Electronic components are included that sense the continuous current flow through each mechanism pole simultaneously to determine when a trip event is needed. Circuit breakers with lug screw retention and methods for manufacturing same

An arc fault detector includes a means for repeatedly measuring an elapsed time. The arc fault detector also includes at least one means to perform arc detection at each repeated elapsed time. Means for initiating a tripping mechanism is activated after the elapsed time. When a fault occurs, means for generating at least one fault code is activated. The fault code is stored in at least one non-volatile memory. The fault code is selected from a group consisting of an arc fault interrupt code, a ground fault interrupt code, and a push-to-test interrupt code. The arc fault detector includes at least one means to display the fault code such as at least one LED. At least a first LED indicates an arc fault interrupt code and at least a second LED indicates a ground fault interrupt code. At least a third LED indicates a push-to-test interrupt code.
