Colloidal compositions and methods of preparing same are provided. The colloidal compositions include a silicate and a metal dispersed therein. The colloidal compositions can further include a stabilizer, such as a quaternary amine, to enhance the and dispersion of the metal loading within the silicate. The colloidal compositions can be made such that the metal is dispersed within the silicate in a controlled manner.

Colloidal compositions and methods of preparing same

A method of preparing a particulate material comprising the steps of adding silicic acid solution, optionally doped with aluminum, optionally added to a slurry of pre-existing nanoparticles at a neutral to slightly acidic pH of no more than seven, and at a temperature of about 20&#xb0; to 30&#xb0; C. This yields a polysilicate particulate dispersion. Then, the pH of the dispersion is raised to greater than seven, to stabilize/reinforce particles of the particulate dispersion. Optionally, the particles may be dried, and have increased porosity and surface area.

Production and use of polysilicate particulate materials

Non-spherical siliceous particles having a plurality of porous branches are disclosed and claimed. The porous branches are randomly oriented and elongated, ring-like, and/or aggregated. An additive introduced during synthesis of the particles modifies pore volume and morphology. The tunability of the pore volume includes an inner diameter ranging from about 2 &#x212b; to about 50,000 &#x212b;. Synthesizing the particles includes mixing under constant or intermittent stirring in a reaction vessel an aqueous silicic acid solution with an acidic heel solution to form a mixture. The stirring may optionally be performed at a variable speed. An additive is introduced into the mixture at a controlled rate, wherein the additive imposes a pH change from a lower pH to a higher pH to the mixture to induce siliceous particle precipitation. Optionally, a metal dopand may be introduced into the particles and/or at least a portion of an outer surface located outside of the pores and/or an inner surface located inside of the pores may be modified.

Siliceous materials having tunable porosity and surface morphology and methods of synthesizing same

A method of preparing a mesoporous zeolite material is disclosed. The method comprises forming template-occluded primary metal-doped silicate particles having an amorphous structure and aggregating the particles into mesoporous agglomerates. The amorphous structure is further transformed into a microporous nanocrystalline zeolite structure, thereby forming a mesoporous zeolitic material. Forming the mesoporous zeolite material includes removing the template from the template-occluded particles.

Method of manufacturing mesoporous zeolite agglomerates

Disclosed and claimed is a novel protective coating for metal surfaces. The protective coating includes one part by weight of the organosilane-modified silica nanoparticles made by the disclosed process and further includes from 0.3 to 3 parts by weight of the reaction product of (1) a compound comprising a polyamine in which a plurality of amine groups are bonded to at least one radical selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbon and hydrocarbon ether groups that separate nitrogen atoms of said amine groups by at least four intermediate atoms in a chain, and (2) a silane which carries a plurality of silicon-bonded hydrolyzable groups and a silicon-bonded organic group that is covalently reactive to and which bonds with said amine group, said silane also comprising hydrolyzable groups, to provide a reaction product molecule which comprises an average of 2.5 to 3.5 silane groups per molecule.

Organically modified silica and use thereof

A method of treating one or more hair shafts, each hair shaft including a cuticle layer and a cortex enclosed in the cuticle layer is disclosed. The method comprises: selecting one or more polymers that can penetrate the hair shafts with a pore size of about 5 angstroms to about 5000 angstroms; and treating the hair shafts by applying an effective amount of a composition containing said polymers to said hair shafts.

Method for treating hair damaged by color treatments

Organosilane-modified nanoparticles of silica, having a particle size of no more than 1 micron, in which the organosilane resides throughout the entire volume of the nanoparticles and not just at the surfaces of the nanoparticle. The nanoparticles may be in a colloidal solution. They may be prepared by hydrolyzing an alkali silicate under acidic conditions to obtain a silicic acid dispersion, followed by adding an organosilane having hydroxyl and/or hydrolyzable groups to the dispersion under acid conditions; and then raising the pH of the dispersion to at least eight to form the nanoparticles. They may be used in an effective paint primer/protective coating formulation.

Organically modifid silica and use thereof

A modified sol-gel method to create metal-rich siliceous material, such as colloidal silica or aluminosilicate particles is disclosed. Initially, the metal salt of choice is added to a silicic acid solution or a silicic acid solution containing aluminum salt. The aluminum is added to vary the metal-support interaction as it forms Al&#x2014;O&#x2014;Si linkages within the silica matrix. Besides aluminum, other metals can be added that form M&#x2014;O&#x2014;Si (M=Ti, B, etc.) linkages, which do not become reduced when treated with a reducing agent. Once the metal, silicic acid and/or aluminum salt is generated, it is subjected to colloidal growth by addition to a basic heel. Upon colloidal synthesis, the metal salt containing colloidal particle is left as is to maximize colloidal stability or is reduced with hydrazine to produce the zero valence metal-containing colloidal particle. Keeping a particle colloidal before use may be an effective method of forming a catalyst material as it can be easily spray-dried or mixed with other materials for extruded catalyst particles.
