A supported catalyst system comprises (a) a dehydrated support material, (b) a transition metal compound, and (c) an activator and is characterised in that the support material has been pretreated with at least two different organoaluminum compounds prior to content with either or both the transition metal-compound or the activator. The prefer transition metal compound is a metallocene and the supported catalyst systems are suitable for the preparation of polymers having broad molecular weight distributions and improved melt strength.

Supported olefin polymerization catalyst

A process for the polymerisation of olefin monomers selected from (a) ethylene, (b) propylene (c) mixtures of ethylene and propylene and (d) mixtures of (a), (b) or (c) with one or more other alpha-olefins is performed in a polymerisation reactor in the presence of a supported polymerisation catalyst characterised in that prior to injection into the reactor said supported polymerisation catalyst in the form of a powder is contacted with an inert hydrocarbon liquid in a quantity sufficient to maintain said catalyst in powder form. The preferred inert hydrocarbon liquid is hexane. The supported polymerisation catalyst is preferably a supported metallocene catalyst. According to the process of the prescrit invention the level of fines associated with the polymer products is reduced in particular the level of fines having a diameter&#x3c;125 &#x3bc;m and microfines of diameter&#x3c;50 &#x3bc;m.

Polymerisation process

A supported polymerization catalyst system is prepared by a method comprising the following steps: (i) addition of a cocatalyst to a porous support, (ii) mixing a polymerisation catalyst with a polymerisable monomer, and (iii) contacting together the components resulting from steps (i) and (ii). The porous support is preferably silica and the polymerisation catalyst is preferably a metallocene. The polymerisable monomer is typically 1-hexene and the supported catalyst system provides advantages a slowly decaying activity profile particularly when operating in the gas phase.

Supported polymerisation catalysts

The present invention provides a process for preparing a catalyst useful in gas phase polymerization of olefins wherein the hydrogen response of the catalyst can be improved by using a ketone as the electron donor in the catalyst. The catalyst consists of compounds of Ti, Mg, Al and a ketone preferably supported on an amorphous support.

Hydrogen response through catalyst modification

A supported polymerisation catalyst system comprises a porous support, a polymerisation catalyst and a cocatalyst wherein the support has been treated with an inert material such as polyisobutene. The support is preferably silica and is preferably treated with the inert material prior to contact with the other components. Preferably the polymerisation catalyst is a metallocene and the polymerisation catalyst system reduces the initial peak isotherm allowing for a smoother activity increase in particular for polymerisations carried out in the gas phase.

An improved method for the preparation of a supported polymerisation catalyst system comprises the combination of (i) a porous support (ii) a polymerisable monomer, (iii) a polymerisation catalyst, and (iv) a cocatalyst, characterised in that the polymerisable monomer is added to the porous support before addition of one or both of the polymerisation catalyst and the cocatalyst. The preferred polymerisation catalyst is a metallocene complex and the preferred porous support is silica. The resultant supported catalysts are stable over long periods of time. The supported catalyst are particularly suitable for use in the gas phase.

Supported catalyst systems are provided comprising (a) a transition metal compound, (b) an activator comprising (iii) an aluminoxane or (iv) a Group lilA metal or metalloid compound, and (c) a support material comprising an inorganic metal oxide, inorganic metal halide or polymeric material or mixtures thereof characterised in that the support material has been pretreated with a source of a transition metal atom. The preferred transition metal compounds are metallocenes and the source of the transition metal atom is typically a ferrous or cupric metal salt. The supported catalyst systems show improved activity and also may reduce fouling in gas phase fluidised bed processes.

A catalyst for the polymerisation of 1-olefins is disclosed, which comprises (1) a compound of Formula B wherein M is Fe[II], Fe[III], Co[I], Co[II], Co[III], Mn[I], Mn[II], Mn[III], Mn[IV], Ru[II], Ru[III] or Ru[IV]; X represents an atom or group covalently or ionically bonded to the transition metal M; T is the oxidation state of the transition metal M and b is the valency of the atom or group X; R, R, R, R, R, Rand Rare independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl, heterohydrocarbyl or substituted heterohydrocarbyl; and when any two or more of R-Rare hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl, heterohydrocarbyl or substituted heterohydrocarbyl, said two or more can be linked to form one or more cyclic substituents; and (2) a further catalyst. Copolymers made using the catalyst having specific physical properties are also disclosed.

Polymerisation catalysts

A process for the polymerisation of olefins is described involving the use of a catalyst system comprising a supported transition metal compound and an activator based on an organoborane and an aluminoxane. Preferably the transition metal compound is a metallocene complex. The support is pretreated with an organoaluminium compound and the process is particularly suitable for the gas phase preparation of copolymers of ethylene and alpha-olefins having a molecular weight distribution in the range 2.5-7.0 and a melt strength in the range 3-12 cN.

Polymerization process

A method for the preparation of a supported transition metal catalyst system which includes the steps of: (i) mixing together in a suitable solvent (a) an aluminoxane and (b) an ionic activator containing a cation and an anion, wherein the anion has at least one substituent containing a moiety having an active hydrogen, (ii) addition of the mixture from step (i) to a support material, and (iii) addition of a transition metal compound in a suitable solvent. The use of tetraisobutylaluminoxane as the aluminoxane results in a more stable activity profile and improved polymer properties in particular melt strength.

Supported catalyst systems are provided comprising (a) a transition metal compound, (b) a non aluminoxane activator comprising, and (c) a support material comprising an inorganic metal oxide, inorganic metal halide or polymeric material or mixtures thereof characterised in that the support material has been pretreated with an SOcontaining compound. The preferred transition metal compounds are metallocenes and the SOcontaining compound is typically sulphuric acid. The supported catalyst systems show improved activity and also may reduce fouling in gas phase fluidised bed processes.

A process for the homopolymerisation of ethylene or the copolymerisation of ethylene and (a-olefins in a polymeristation reactor, said process carried out in the presence of a catalyst system comprising (a) a polymerisation catalyst and (b) an ionic activator is characterised in that an organometallic compound of a Group IIIB metal having at least one unit of formula: M&#xe7;0&#xe7;R or M&#xe7;0&#xe7;M where M is the Group IIIB metal and R is a hydrocarbyl group is added to the reactor. Preferred organometallic compounds include aluminoxanes and the process results in improved poison scavenging as well as advantages in activity profiles, catalyst activity and product characteristics. The process is particularly suitable for use with supported metallocene catalyst systems in the slurry or gas phase.

Olefin polymerisation process

The present invention provides a novel process for preparing a catalyst useful in gas phase polymerization of olefins wherein the physical properties of the polymer and the productivity of the catalyst can be altered depending on the sequence of addition of the catalyst components. The catalyst consists of compounds of Ti, Mg, Al and optionally an electron donor supported on an amorphous support.

Enhanced polyolefin catalyst

A catalyst for the polymerization of 1-olefins is disclosed, which comprises (1) a compound of Formula B wherein M is Fe[II], Fe[III], Co[I], Co[II], Co[III], Mn[I], Mn[II], Mn[III], Mn[IV], Ru[II], Ru[III] or Ru[IV]; X represents an atom or group covalently or ionically bonded to the transition metal M; T is the oxidation state of the transition metal M and b is the valency of the atom or group X; R, R, R, R, R, Rand Rare independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl, heterohydrocarbyl or substituted heterohydrocarbyl; and when any two or more of R&#x2013;Rare hydrocarbyl, substituted hydrocarbyl, heterohydrocarbyl or substituted heterohydrocarbyl, said two or more can be linked to form one or more cyclic substituents; and (2) a further catalyst. Copolymers made using the catalyst having specific physical properties are also disclosed 

Polymerization catalysts

A metallocene catalyst may be temporarily and reversibly passivated by contact with an effective amount of a passivating compound selected from the group of oxygen, oxygen-containing compounds, and nitrogen-containing compounds.
