A method of attaching a branch outlet fitting to a metal pipe buried beneath the earth's surface while causing reduced disturbance to the earth above the pipe, comprising digging a vertical excavation from the earth's surface to expose a short length of the pipe; positioning a first fitting portion on a lower surface of the pipe; positioning a second fitting portion on an upper surface of the pipe in alignment with the first fitting portion, the first and second fitting portions having welding material thereon adjacent the pipe surfaces and each other; and from the earth's surface, activating the welding material to physically and sealably secure the fitting portions to the pipe and to each other.

Self-contained keyhold weld fitting and method of use

Devices and methods for selectively closing and opening flow of production fluid (oil, gas, or water) through the flowbore of a production string by chemically altering the phase of fluid media flowing through the production tubing to form a substantially solid plug or blockage. The phase of the fluid media is altered by selectively injecting a predetermined catalyst into a portion of the flowbore wherein it is desired to create a plug or blockage. When it is desired to remove the blockage, a dissolving agent is selectively added to the flowbore via a reversing sub to reverse the phase of the blockage from solid to liquid/gas. As the blockage is dissolved, flow is reestablished within the flowbore.

Subsurface safety valve with closure provided by the flowing medium

A subsurface safety valve has a closure sleeve or rod mounted below the closure mechanism. Control signal pushes the sleeve up (uphole) or down (downhole), whichever is applicable, which causes the closure element to rotate (or slide, or otherwise translate) to its open position. A loss of control signal allows the closure spring to push the sleeve or rod downhole (or uphole, whichever is appropriate). This movement causes the closure element to be driven to its closed position against the seat.

Closure mechanism with integrated actuator for subsurface valves

Various techniques for holding open an SSSV using expansion technology are disclosed. A sleeve is delivered to the SSSV and expanded mechanically or hydraulically to deposit the deformed sleeve in position over a flapper or against a flow tube holding the flapper in the open position.

Flapper lock open apparatus

The hydraulic control system for operating a flow tube in a subsurface safety valve is disclosed. An isolation piston is used in conjunction with an operating control line and an engagement control line. Both control lines run from the surface. The isolation piston is spring loaded to equalize pressure across a dynamic piston to allow the flow tube to be shifted by a power spring to allow in turn the subsurface safety valve to close. Application of pressure on the engagement control line directs pressure applied through the operating control line to the top of the dynamic piston thus shifting the flow tube downwardly to open the subsurface safety valve. In an alternative embodiment, a coaxial control line directs fluid to the top of the dynamic piston and additionally to a parallel path leading to the bottom of the dynamic piston where a control valve is mounted. The control valve can be actuated hydraulically, electronically or other ways such that when it is closed the pressure applied to the dynamic piston shifts the flow to open the subsurface safety valve. A loss of signal to the control valve equalizes the dynamic piston allowing the flow tube to shift.

Control system for deep set subsurface valves

A subsurface safety device positioning and monitoring system includes a controller and at least one downhole sensor that senses and records conditions of the well near the valve and of the valve itself. Conditions include temperature, pressure, flow rate, degree of closure of valve, structural condition of valve, water cut of produced fluids, etc.

Computer controlled downhole safety valve system

A mechanism for accurately positioning a well tool in axially concentric relationship to a well conduit comprises a housing having a plurality of peripherally spaced vertically extending slots therein. A stabilizer linkage is mounted in each slot, with one end of the linkage being pivotally secured in the slot and the other end free to move in an axial direction. Axially spaced anti-friction elements are carried on the linkage and are movable radially into engagement with the casing wall by axial movement of the other end of the stabilizer linkage. The other end of the stabilizer linkage is pivotally secured to a sleeve which is sealably and slidably mounted within the housing and defines a trapped fluid chamber which acts as a dashpot to delay radial expansion movement of the stabilizer linkage. A check valve cooperating with the trapped fluid chamber permits rapid radially retracting movement of the stabilizer linkage to permit the anti-friction elements to pass through restrictions in the well conduit during withdrawal of the tool.
