An input device for a multiple wavelength band optical switch comprising: an optical demultiplexer configured to receive light and disperse the received light along a dispersion axis; and a light director configured to direct light in a first wavelength band to the optical demultiplexer at a first angle of incidence and to direct light in a second wavelength band to the optical demultiplexer at a second angle of incidence, the second angle of incidence being different from the first: wherein the difference between the first and second angles of incidence causes the demultiplexer to output dispersed spectra of light corresponding to the first and second bands such that the dispersed spectrum corresponding to the first band is overlapped along the dispersion axis and separated along a switch axis relative to the dispersed spectrum corresponding to the second wavelength band, the switch axis being perpendicular to the dispersion axis.

Multiple wavelength band optical switching unit

An optical switching unit comprising: a plurality of arrays of multiple optical waveguides; and a switching structure controllable to direct light received from any of the optical waveguides in a first array of the plurality of arrays to one or more optical waveguides of each other array in the plurality of arrays.

Methods and devices for manipulating optical signals. In one example, a LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) device includes a surface bearing an anti-reflection structure. The anti-reflection structure includes i) a physical surface having a topography with features having lateral dimensions of less than 2000 nm and having an average refraction index which decreases with distance away from the surface; and ii) a configuration of the topography, averaged over lateral dimensions of greater than 2000 nm, varies with lateral position on the surface.

Optical device and methods

We describe a wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) reconfigurable optical switch, the switch comprising: a set of arrays of optical beam connections, each comprising an array of optical outputs and having an optical input to receive a WDM input optical signal; a first diffractive element to demultiplexed said WDM input optical signal into a plurality of demultiplexed optical input beams, and to disperse said demultiplexed optical input beams spatially along a first axis; first relay optics between said set of arrays of optical beam connections and said first diffractive element; and a reconfigurable holographic array comprising a 2D array of reconfigurable sub-holograms defining sub-hologram rows and columns; wherein said arrays of said set of arrays are at least one dimensional arrays extending spatially in a direction parallel to said first axis and arranged in a column defining a second axis orthogonal to said first axis; wherein said sub-hologram rows are aligned along said first axis, and wherein said sub-hologram columns are aligned along said second axis; wherein a number of said sub-hologram rows corresponds to a number of arrays in said set of arrays; and wherein each sub-hologram row is configured to receive a set of demultiplexed optical input beams at different carrier wavelengths demultiplexed from the optical input for the array of the set of arrays to which the row corresponds; wherein each of said sub-holograms in a sub-hologram row is reconfigurable to steer a respective wavelength channel of the WDM input signal for the array to which the sub-hologram row corresponds, towards a selected said optical output for the array; and wherein each said sub-hologram row is configured to steer the demultiplexed optical input beams for a respective array of the set of arrays of optical beam connections.

Optical switching systems

A wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) reconfigurable optical switch, the switch has at least one optical input port to receive a WDM input optical signal comprising a plurality of wavelength channels; a plurality of optical output ports; a reconfigurable holographic array on an optical path between the at least one optical input port and the plurality of optical output ports; and at least one diffractive element on an optical path between at least one optical input port and the reconfigurable holographic array, to demultiplex the WDM input optical signal into a plurality of demultiplexed optical input beam channels, and to disperse the demultiplexed optical input beam channels spatially along a first axis on said the reconfigurable holographic array; and the switch further comprises one or more beam profiling optical elements to modify transverse beam profiles of the demultiplexed optical input beam channels.

Optical systems

A wavelength division multiplexed (WDM) reconfigurable optical switch. The switch has a set of arrays of optical beam connections, each comprising an array of optical outputs and having an optical input to receive a WDM input optical signal; a first diffractive element to demultiplexed the WDM input optical signal into a plurality of demultiplexed optical input beams, and to disperse said demultiplexed optical input beams spatially along a first axis; first relay optics between the set of arrays of optical beam connections and the first diffractive element; and a reconfigurable holographic array comprising a 2D array of reconfigurable sub-holograms defining sub-hologram rows and columns. The arrays of said set of arrays and the sub-hologram rows and columns are arranged and aligned in particular ways so that wavelength channels of the WDM input signal for each array can be steered within the device towards a selected optical output.

A projection system relates to the field of display technologies, and includes a projection unit, a screen unit, an outer frame, and a support structure component. The support structure component is configured to securely connect the screen unit to the outer frame. The support structure component is located on a light incident side of the screen unit. The support structure component includes a light transmission part and at least one connecting part. The light transmission part is securely connected to the screen unit. The light transmission part is configured to enable light rays emitted by the projection unit and irradiating the light transmission part to pass through. The at least one connecting part is located out of propagation paths of light rays emitted by the projection unit. The at least one connecting part is configured to securely connect the light transmission part to the outer frame.

Projection system

A LCOS routing device, comprising: an optical input and plurality of optical outputs; a spatial light modulator (SLM) between said input and output, for displaying a kinoform; a data processor, configured to provide kinoform data for displaying said kinoform on said SLM. Said data processor inputs routing and calculates said kinoform data. Said data processor calculates kinoform data by: determining an initial phase pattern for said kinoform; calculating a replay field of said phase pattern; modifying an amplitude component of said replay field, retaining a phase component of said replay field to provide an updated replay field; performing a space-frequency transform on said updated replay field to determine an updated phase pattern for said kinoform; and repeating said calculating and updating of said replay field and said performing of said space-frequency transform until said kinoform for display is determined; and outputting said kinoform data for display on said LCOS SLM.

Apparatus and methods for light beam routing in telecommunication

This invention relates to methods and apparatus for routing light beams in telecommunications devices using holographic techniques, in particular by displaying kinoforms on Liquid Crystal on Silicon devices. At least one optical input to receives an input beam. A plurality of optical outputs and a spatial light modulator (SLM) on an optical path between said optical input and said optical outputs are provided, and a driver for said SLM to display a kinoform on said SLM diffracts said input beam into an output beam comprising a plurality of diffraction orders, wherein a routed one of said diffraction orders is directed to at least one selected said optical output; said apparatus is configured to modify a wavefront of said output beam to reduce a coupling of said output beam into said selected optical output; and said kinoform is adapted to compensate for said wavefront modification to compensate for said reduced coupling.

Optical beam routing apparatus and methods

We describe methods and devices for manipulating optical signals. A method of manipulating an optical signal comprises providing a device () comprising a layer () of blue phase liquid crystal in the path of the optical signal; and applying a dynamically varying spatial pattern of voltages across the layer () of blue phase liquid crystal, thereby causing the refractive index of the layer () of blue phase liquid crystal to vary according the dynamically varying spatial pattern.

The present invention provides an optical imaging processing system. The system includes a screen, an incident light source, and at least one optical transmission medium, where the optical transmission medium is disposed in an optical imaging path in which the incident light source is emergent and is projected to the screen; an light incident face of the optical transmission medium faces the incident light source, and an light exiting face of the optical transmission medium faces the screen, where at least one cavity is included between the light incident face and the light exiting face of the optical transmission medium, and a cross-section shape of the cavity is an isosceles trapezoid; and the cavity includes a light transmission area and a light blanking area used for object accommodation, and the optical imaging path bypasses the light blanking area and penetrates through the optical transmission medium through the light transmission area.

Optical imaging processing system

We describe a LCOS (liquid crystal on silicon) telecommunications light beam routing device, the device comprising: an optical input; a plurality of optical outputs; a LCOS spatial light modulator (SLM) in an optical path between said input and said output, for displaying a kinoform; a data processor, coupled to said SLM, configured to provide kinoform data for displaying said kinoform on said SLM; wherein said kinoform data defines a kinoform which routes a beam from said optical input to a selected said optical output; wherein said data processor is configured to input routing data defining said selected optical output and to calculate said kinoform data for routing said beam responsive to said routing data; and wherein said data processor is configured to calculate said kinoform data by: determining an initial phase pattern for said kinoform; calculating a replay field of said phase pattern; modifying an amplitude component of said replay field to represent a target replay field for said beam routing, retaining a phase component of said replay field to provide an updated replay field; performing a space-frequency transform on said updated replay field to determine an updated phase pattern for said kinoform; and repeating said calculating and updating of said replay field and said performing of said space-frequency transform until said kinoform for display is determined; and outputting said kinoform data for display on said LCOS SLM.

This invention relates to methods and apparatus for routing light beams in telecommunications devices using holographic techniques, in particular by displaying kinoforms on LCOS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) devices. Thus we describe optical beam routing apparatus comprising: at least one optical input to receive an input beam; a plurality of optical outputs; a spatial light modulator (SLM) on an optical path between said optical input and said optical outputs; and a driver for said SLM to display a kinoform on said SLM to diffract said input beam into an output beam comprising a plurality of diffraction orders, wherein a routed one of said diffraction orders is directed to at least one selected said optical output; wherein said apparatus is configured to modify a wavefront of said output beam to reduce a coupling of said output beam into said selected optical output; and wherein said kinoform is adapted to compensate for said wavefront modification to compensate for said reduced coupling and thereby to reduce a coupling of other diffracted light from said input beam into others of said optical outputs than said at least one selected optical output.

The invention relates to optical beam steering. There is described an optical beam steering apparatus, comprising: a splitter arranged to split an optical beam into at least a first part having a first polarization and a second part having a second polarization, said first and second polarizations being substantially mutually orthogonal; a first liquid crystal device region arranged to receive said first part and to have director orientation substantially aligned to said first polarization; and a second liquid crystal device region arranged to receive said second part and to have director orientation substantially aligned to said second polarization.

Optical beam steering
