The present disclosure is directed toward architectures that combine DWDM and CWDM concepts in a single PIC. Transmitter stages in accordance with the present disclosure include a plurality of multiwavelength lasers having regions of separately grown epitaxial material whose gain peaks are centered at different wavelengths. Each laser launches a wavelength comb comprising a plurality of wavelength signals into a PLC, where the wavelengths within each wavelength comb are separated by a wavelength spacing that is smaller than that between adjacent wavelength combs. In some embodiments, the PLC includes modulator banks for encoding data on the wavelength signals and combining them to produce a composite DWDM output signal. In some embodiments, a receiver stage is included for demultiplexing a composite DWDM input signal and detecting each wavelength channel within it. In some embodiments, the receiver stage employs polarization-diversity techniques to enable it to operate on unpolarized/randomly polarized input signals.

Photonic integrated circuit for high-wavelength-channel-count wavelength-division-multiplexed systems

Integrated-optics systems are presented in which an optically active device is optically coupled with a silicon waveguide via a passive compound-semiconductor waveguide. In a first region, the passive waveguide and the optically active device collectively define a composite waveguide structure, where the optically active device functions as the central ridge portion of a rib-waveguide structure. The optically active device is configured to control the vertical position of an optical mode in the composite waveguide along its length such that the optical mode is optically coupled into the passive waveguide with low loss. The passive waveguide and the silicon waveguide collectively define a vertical coupler in a second region, where the passive and silicon waveguides are configured to control the distribution of the optical mode along the length of the coupler, thereby enabling the entire mode to transition between the passive and silicon waveguides with low loss.

System comprising an integrated waveguide-coupled optically active device and method of formation

Embodiments of the invention describe apparatuses, optical systems, and methods related to utilizing optical cladding layers. According to one embodiment, a hybrid optical device includes a silicon semiconductor layer and a III-V semiconductor layer having an overlapping region, wherein a majority of a field of an optical mode in the overlapping region is to be contained in the III-V semiconductor layer. A cladding region between the silicon semiconductor layer and the III-V semiconductor layer has a spatial property to substantially confine the optical mode to the III-V semiconductor layer and enable heat dissipation through the silicon semiconductor layer.

Embodiments of the invention describe apparatuses, optical systems, and methods for utilizing a dynamically reconfigurable optical transmitter. A laser array outputs a plurality of laser signals (which may further be modulated based on electrical signals), each of the plurality of laser signals having a wavelength, wherein the wavelength of each of the plurality of laser signals is tunable based on other electrical signals. An optical router receives the plurality of (modulated) laser signals at input ports and outputs the plurality of received (modulated) laser signals to one or more output ports based on the tuned wavelength of each of the plurality of received laser signals. This reconfigurable transmitter enables dynamic bandwidth allocation for multiple destinations via the tuning of the laser wavelengths.

Reconfigurable optical router

An example photonic integrated circuit includes a transmitter circuit with a optical communication path to an optical coupler configured to couple with an optical fiber. The optical communication path has a propagation direction away from the transmitter circuit and towards the optical coupler. A counter-propagating tap diverts light sent by a light source backward against the propagation direction of the optical communication path. A photodiode receives the diverted light and measures its power level. The photodiode generates a feedback signal for the optical coupler and provides the feedback signal to the optical coupler. The optical coupler receives the feedback signal and adjusts a coupling alignment of the optical communication path to the optical fiber based on the feedback signal, which indicates the measured power level of the diverted counter-propagating light.

Described herein are photonic systems and devices including a optical interface unit disposed on a bottom side of a photonic integrated circuit (PIC) to receive light from an emitter of the PIC. A top side of the PIC includes a flip-chip interface for electrically coupling the PIC to an organic substrate via the top side. An alignment feature corresponding to the emitter is formed with the emitter to be offset by a predetermined distance value; because the emitter and the alignment feature are formed using a shared processing operation, the offset (i.e., predetermined distance value) may be precise and consistent across similarly produced PICs. The PIC comprises a processing feature to image the alignment feature from the bottom side (e.g., a hole). A heat spreader layer surrounds the optical interface unit and is disposed on the bottom side of the PIC to spread heat from the PIC.

Optical and thermal interface for photonic integrated circuits

Integrated-optics systems are presented in which an active-material stack is disposed on a coupling layer in a first region to collectively define an OA waveguide that supports an optical mode of a light signal. The coupling layer is patterned to define a coupling waveguide and a passive waveguide, which are formed as two abutting, optically coupled segments of the coupling layer. The lateral dimensions of the active-material stack are configured to control the shape and vertical position of the optical mode at any location along the length of the OA waveguide. The active-material stack includes a taper that narrows along its length such that the optical mode is located completely in the coupling waveguide where the coupling waveguide abuts the passive waveguide. In some embodiments, the passive layer is optically coupled with the OA waveguide and a silicon waveguide, thereby enabling light to propagate between them.

Described herein are photonic integrated circuits (PICs) comprising a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) to output a signal comprising a plurality of wavelengths, a sensor to detect data associated with a power value of each wavelength of the output signal of the SOA, a filter to filter power values of one or more of the wavelengths of the output signal of the SOA, and control circuitry to control the filter to reduce a difference between a pre-determined power value of each filtered wavelength of the output signal of the SOA and the detected power value of each filtered wavelength of the output signal of the SOA.

In photonic integrated circuits implemented in silicon-on-insulator substrates, non-conductive channels formed, in accordance with various embodiments, in the silicon device layer and/or the silicon handle of the substrate in regions underneath radio-frequency transmission lines of photonic devices can provide breaks in parasitic conductive layers of the substrate, thereby reducing radio-frequency substrate losses.

Photonic and electronic integrated circuits can be cooled using variable conductance heat pipes containing a non-condensable gas in addition to a phase-changing working fluid. To package the heat pipe with a subassembly including the integrated circuits in a standard housing providing a heat sink contact area, the heat pipe is oriented, in some embodiments, with its axis between evaporator and condenser ends substantially perpendicular to the direction along which the integrated circuit subassembly is separated from the heat sink contact area, and a portion of the exterior surface of the heat pipe is thermally insulated, with a suitable thermal insulation structure, from the heat sink contact area.

Aspects of the present disclosure are directed to wavelength division multiplexing systems comprising arrays of spectrally selective devices that are arranged on a substrate to compensate for perturbations of the spectral characteristics of the devices due to factors such as temperature non-uniformity, inherent spectral non-uniformity, and the like. As a result, shifts in the center wavelengths and/or changes in the wavelength spacing for the wavelength channels of a WDM system due to such perturbations are mitigated. In some embodiments, an array of spectrally selective devices is arranged on a substrate such that their respective wavelength channels are not linearly correlated with their physical position within the array, enabling the devices to be arranged in pairs that are subject to substantially the same environmental conditions and/or operate on nearly the same spectral range.
