A variable displacement compressor for an air conditioning system includes a suction throttle valve. The suction throttle valve includes a housing with a cavity formed therein. A first piston reciprocatingly disposed in the cavity is configured to cause a variable restriction of a flow of refrigerant through a suction inlet formed in the housing. The suction inlet provides fluid communication between a suction port and the cavity formed in the housing. The refrigerant flows through the suction port in a direction that is not parallel to a direction the piston reciprocates within the cavity. The suction throttle valve is configured to increase the restriction in the suction inlet when a crankcase pressure associated with the variable displacement compression is increased relative to an external suction pressure of the refrigerant entering the suction throttle valve.

A compressor including a hollow housing having a suction chamber, a discharge chamber, and a crank chamber formed therein. A first fluid flow path provided within the compressor facilitates a flow of the working fluid from the crank chamber to the suction chamber. A second fluid flow path provided within the compressor facilitates a flow of a mixture of the working fluid and a lubricating fluid from the crank chamber to the suction chamber, wherein the second fluid flow path is selectively opened and closed by an annular sleeve.

The center housing includes an integrated compressor bearing support and compressor base surface that divides the housing into cantilevered wall sections. A method for controlling a hybrid compressor system is disclosed. The hybrid compressor system includes a variable displacement hybrid compressor that is selectively driven by one of an engine and an electric motor to cool a passenger compartment of a vehicle. The method includes the steps of transmitting a demand signal to activate an electric motor drive mode of the hybrid compressor system, whereby the electric motor drives the hybrid compressor, transmitting a compressor displacement signal to the hybrid compressor to set a displacement of the compressor to a minimum level, waiting a predefined time period, activating the electric motor to drive the compressor, determining a suction pressure of a suction chamber of the hybrid compressor, determining whether the displacement of the hybrid compressor is sufficient based on the suction pressure determination, and changing the displacement of the compressor if the displacement is insufficient.

A variable displacement piston compressor comprising a housing and a shaft supported within the housing for rotational movement about an axis. The shaft includes a stepped down portion defining a reduced diameter within the shaft. A pin extends generally outward from the shaft and includes a distal end. A sleeve is mounted about the shaft, is slidable along the shaft, and is rotatable with the shaft. The sleeve extends over a portion of the stepped down portion of the shaft and defines a radial gap between the sleeve and the stepped down portion. A swash-ring is supported on the sleeve and is rotatable with the shaft. The swash-ring is pivotably coupled to the distal end of the pin. The swash-ring defines an angle with the axis that is adjustable with respect to the axis. A biasing member engages the sleeve and biases the sleeve along the shaft.

A system for driving a compressor is disclosed. The system includes an internal combustion engine in communication with the compressor for selectively driving an input shaft of the compressor; an electric motor in communication with the compressor for selectively driving the compressor when the compressor is not being driven by the engine; and a gear assembly operatively connected to a motor output of the electric motor shaft for changing a rotational speed of the motor output shaft.

A controller adjusts the independent operation of the engine driven compressor and electric motor driven compressor in response to cooling demand input, and operational parameters of the engine and the battery, as well as optionally the electric motor driven compressor output and engine driven compressor output. A method of independently operating an engine driven compressor and electric motor driven compressor is also provided. The air-conditioning system, controller, and method are particularly useful in hybrid vehicles that use smaller displacement internal combustion engines and electric motor drive means.
