A solid waste treatment system includes: a solid-liquid separator module configured to receive mixed solid and liquid waste and separating solid material from the mixed solid and liquid waste; an accumulator and macerator module configured to receive and macerate the solid material from the solid-liquid separator module; a drying module configured to receive and dry the macerated solid material from the accumulator and macerator module; and a combustion module configured to receive and combust the dried macerated solid material from the drying module.

Solid waste treatment system

The disclosure provides biomedical devices comprising indicator agents sensitive to the environment of use, methods of using same to enhance adherence to a treatment or usage regimen, and systems for monitoring compliance of use of the biomedical device. The biomedical device may be an intravaginal ring comprised of biocompatible polymeric material having indicator agent incorporated therein capable of producing a detectable change in response to a stimulus within the vaginal environment.

A liquid waste treatment system includes: a baffle tank subsystem for particle settling; a preprocess tank subsystem downstream of the baffle tank subsystem; a process tank subsystem downstream of the preprocess tank subsystem; and a storage tank subsystem downstream of the process tank subsystem for the storage of treated liquid. A Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) processing module may be included and may be inserted into the preprocess tank subsystem or implemented in a second process tank downstream of the process tank subsystem. A faster disinfection may occur in the process tank subsystem, and a slower disinfection may occur in the second process tank according to distinct respective kill curves. An electrochemical cell may be operated in a pulse mode in liquid waste in a pulsed mode.

Liquid waste treatment system

A fluoride treated ceramic material is provided, the ceramic material comprising fluorinated metal oxide on its surface. A method for the preparation of such treated ceramics is also provided, the method involving exposure of the ceramic to a fluorine-containing reagent. The ceramic materials can be further functionalized so as to bond to functional ligands and/or resins. The ceramic materials can be, for example, ceramic medical implants or particulate ceramic, which can be incorporated within dental and/or orthopedic composites.

Modification of ceramic surfaces

An apparatus, system, and method are disclosed for modulating electric current. An electron source electrode provides a flow of electrons in a partial vacuum environment. An ionizable gas in the partial vacuum environment forms positively charged ion particles in response to impact with the electrons from the electron source electrode. Application of a bias voltage differential between a first bias electrode and a second bias electrode in the partial vacuum environment forms an electric field gradient in a path of the flow of electrons. A collector electrode in the partial vacuum environment collects more electrons than ion particles when a collector electrode input voltage is above a threshold, and collects more ion particles than electrons when the collector electrode input voltage is below the threshold.

A detector array and method for making the detector array. The array includes a substrate including a plurality of trenches formed therein, and includes a plurality of collectors electrically isolated from each other, formed on the walls of the trenches, and configured to collect charge particles incident on respective ones of the collectors and to output from said collectors signals indicative of charged particle collection. The array includes a plurality of readout circuits disposed on a side of the substrate opposite openings to the collectors. The readout circuits are configured to read charge collection signals from respective ones of the plurality of collectors.

A detector array and method for making the detector array. The detector array includes a substrate including a plurality of trenches formed therein, and a plurality of collectors electrically isolated from each other, formed on the walls of the trenches, and configured to collect charged particles incident on respective ones of the collectors and to output from the collectors signals indicative of charged particle collection. In the detector array, adjacent ones of the plurality of trenches are disposed in a staggered configuration relative to one another. The method forms in a substrate a plurality of trenches across a surface of the substrate such that adjacent ones of the trenches are in a staggered sequence relative to one another, forms in the plurality of trenches a plurality of collectors, and connects a plurality of electrodes respectively to the collectors.

High density faraday cup array or other open trench structures and method of manufacture thereof

A coated medical implant, such as a coated dental component, is provided, the coated medical implant including a substrate surface formed of a material comprising available hydroxyl groups and a silicon oxide coating layer chemisorbed on the substrate surface. A method for the preparation of such coated implants is also provided, the method involving application of the silicon oxide coating layer to the substrate surface by chemical vapor deposition. A dental structure is also provided, which includes a first dental component having a substrate surface formed of a material comprising available hydroxyl groups; a silicon oxide coating layer chemisorbed on the substrate surface; a silane coupling agent overlying and covalently attached to the silicon oxide layer; a dental cement overlying and coupled to the silane coupling agent; and a second dental component having a surface bonded to the dental cement.

Surface modification for enhanced silanation of ceramic materials

The present disclosure is directed to a system and method for sonically activating cement slurries. In some implementations, a method of treating a subterranean formation includes positioning a settable composition including a capsule in a wellbore. The capsule is used to increase a setting rate in response to at least sonic signals. A sonic signal is transmitted to at least a portion of the settable composition to release an activator from the capsule.

Methods of sonically activating cement compositions

An improved electrode capable of smaller variances and mean breakdown voltage, increased breakdown reliability, smaller electron emission turn-on requirements, and stable electron emissions capable of high current densities include a first electrode material, an adhesion-promoting layer disposed on at least one surface of the first electrode material, and a nanostructure-containing material disposed on at least a portion of the adhesion promoting layer. An improved gas discharge device is provided incorporating an electrode formed as described above. An improved circuit incorporating an improved gas discharge tube device as set forth above is also provided. Further, an improved telecommunications network, incorporating an improved gas discharge tube device as set forth above can also be provided. An improved lighting device is also provided incorporating an electrode constructed as described above.

Coated electrode with enhanced electron emission and ignition characteristics

A three dimensional photonic crystal and layer-by-layer processes of fabricating the photonic crystal. A substrate is exposed to a plurality of first microspheres made of a first material, the first material being of a type that will bond to the templated substrate and form a self-passivated layer of first microspheres to produce a first layer. The first layer is exposed to a plurality of second microspheres made of a second material, the second material being of a type that will bond to the first layer and form a self-passivated layer of second microspheres. This layering of alternating first and second microspheres can be repeated as desired to build a three dimensional photonic crystal of desired geometry. Charged polymers such as polyelectrolyte coatings can be used to create the bonds.

Layered photonic crystals

A three dimensional photonic crystal and layer-by-layer processes of fabricating the photonic crystal. A templated substrate is exposed to a plurality of first microspheres made of a first material, the first material being of a type that will bond to the templated substrate and form a self-passivated layer of first microspheres to produce a first layer. The first layer is exposed to a plurality of second microspheres made of a second material, the second material being of a type that will bond to the first layer and form a self-passivated layer of second microspheres. This layering of alternating first and second microspheres can be repeated as desired to build a three dimensional photonic crystal of desired geometry.

Layer-by-layer assembly of photonic crystals

An electrode for electrochemical uses is made of a conductive metal mesh coated with diamond-like carbon or dirty diamond. The electrode may be used in electrochemical cell either as a cathode or as an anode, or can be used with an alternating current.
