Methods and systems are provided for supporting roaming wireless devices and roaming wireless groups with access controls. One exemplary method involves obtaining a set of permissions associated with a roaming device from its home radio system, obtaining a set of permissions for the roaming device from the visited radio system, merging the obtained sets of permissions, and responding to a request from the roaming device in accordance with the merged set of permissions for the roaming device within the visited radio system. Another exemplary method involves obtaining permissions associated with a roaming radio group from its home radio system, obtaining permissions for the roaming radio group from the visited radio system, merging the obtained permissions, and responding to a group service request for the roaming radio group in accordance with the merged set of permissions for the roaming radio group within the visited radio system.

An actionable communication resource forming function performs a method for forming an actionable communication resource in a communication system. The method includes receiving, from a resource management system, a plurality of resource identifiers that identify a plurality of resources, wherein each resource is associated with a communication device addressable by a communication system using a communication device identifier; for each resource identifier, determining the communication device identifier for the associated communication device; for each communication device identifier, identifying a communication group to which the corresponding communication device is affiliated, and using the identified communication groups to determine a set of communication groups, wherein each communication group in the set is addressable by the communication system, wherein an actionable communication resource is formed from the set of communication groups to facilitate communications with the communication devices over the communication system using the addressable communication groups.

Method and apparatus for bridging calls between two disparate push-to-talk systems

A hosted inter-radio frequency subsystem interface (HIF) maintains a list of affiliated radio frequency subsystems (RFSSs), the list identifies at least one serving RFSS. An affiliation request is transmitted from the HIF to the home RFSS, which is a home RFSS of the group. The HIF receives from the serving RFSS a request to initiate an inter-RFSS group call to the group using HIF addressing. The HIF transmits a request to the home RFSS to initiate the inter-RFSS group call using serving RFSS addressing. A data packet from the home RFSS or the serving RFSS is received at the HIF. Upon receipt, the HIF transmits a copy of the data packet to the serving RFSS if the data packet was received from the home RFSS; otherwise, the HIF transmits a copy of the data packet to the home RFSS if the data packet was received from the serving RFSS.

A method and device enable establishing an inter-radio frequency subsystem interface (ISSI) unit-to-unit call between a calling unit of a calling home radio frequency subsystem (RFSS), and a called unit of a called home RFSS, through a hosted ISSI function (HIF). The method includes processing, at the HIF, a first invite message received from the calling home RFSS, wherein the first invite message includes a first request uniform resource identifier (URI) that designates an alias system unit identification (SU-ID). In response to the first invite message, transmitting, from the HIF to the called home RFSS, a second invite message, including a second request URI that designates a real SU-ID, wherein the HIF acts as the calling home RFSS. The unit-to-unit call is thus established between the calling unit and the called unit through the calling home RFSS, the HIF, and the called home RFSS.

A method and device enables programming inter-subsystem interface (ISSI) identity data, which identifies at least one of units or groups operating in a communication network, into at least one unit associated with a first radio frequency subsystem. The method includes receiving the ISSI identity data at the first radio frequency subsystem from an ISSI communication node, wherein the ISSI identity data identifies at least one of unit information or group information associated with a second radio frequency subsystem operating in the communication network. At least a portion of the ISSI identity data is then programmed into the at least one unit associated with the first radio frequency subsystem.

A system and method for monitoring congestion in a communication system including an external packet switched network. The communication system includes a plurality of interconnected host devices, such as base stations, consoles, zone controllers. To determine the presence of congestion on links between a pair of host devices, a series of sequential packets are transmitted between the pair. The sequentially transmitted packets are then monitor fluctuations in transmission delays and lost packets. These two criteria are used to identify congestion levels present on the various links in the communication system, and communications on the relevant interzone link are controlled based on the identified congestion level.

System and method for monitoring congestion in communication systems

The present disclosure provides an efficient and effective method for allocating provisional PUIDs and PGIDs to subscriber units and groups during a failure, such that when the communication system recovers, there is a decrease in or elimination of the number of dropped or missed communications. The present disclosure reserves a range of provisional PUIDs and PGIDs for resource controllers operating in a region of system failure to assign when subscriber units roam into the region of failure in the communication system. The present disclosure addresses creating PUID and PGID ranges for resource controllers to assign to roaming subscriber units in order to allow for assignment of PUIDs and PGIDs during periods of subsystem isolation and site trunking, i.e., when the particular site or subsystem cannot communicate with the rest of the communication system. The present disclosure also addresses recovering from these situations, re-registration, and reallocation of PUIDs and PGIDs.

Method of assigning provisional identification to a subscriber unit and group

A method for providing a mobile device in a packet data network access to a channelized network is disclosed. At a gateway between the two networks, a first channelized network message that is encapsulated in a first IP data packet from the packet data network is received. The first channelized network message is retrieved and reformatted for sending over the channelized network. The gateway then receives a second channelized network message from the channelized network. An identifier of a mobile device associated with the second channelized network message is retrieved and an IP address for the identified mobile device is determined. Then, the gateway encapsulates the second channelized network message into a second IP data packet and sends the encapsulated second channelized network message to the identified mobile device in the packet data network.

Methods are disclosed for determining a link Op from among a plurality of host devices on a LAN, for exchanging control messages between a communication server and one or more sites having a link Op and a listening Op and for the link Op and/or listening Op to detect and recover from missing packets in a sequence of IP packets received from the server. The link Op and listening Op join a control multicast group address to receive control messages from the server. The link Op establishes a reliable message transfer session with the server. Upon the link Op detecting a missing packet, the link Op may request that the communication server resend the packet. Upon the listening Op detecting a missing packet, the listening Op determines whether the link Op will request retransmission of the missing packet. If the link Op is determined to not request retransmission of the missing packet, the listening Op requests retransmission of the missing packet or accepts the packet as missing and processes an out-of-sequence packet. If the link Op is determined to request retransmission of the missing packet, the listening Op discards the packet and relies upon the link Op to request retransmission of the missing packet.

Methods for reliably sending IP multicast packets to multiple endpoints of a local area network

A method of call control in a packet-based communication system having consoles, distributed among one or more console sites, that are adapted to monitor talkgroup calls. The console sites are served by console site links having a limited available bandwidth. Upon receiving a request for a talkgroup call, there is identified a number of priority consoles requesting participation in a talkgroup call. For example, the priority consoles (or console operators) may indicate that monitoring of the talkgroup call is 'critical' for those consoles. Based on the location of the priority consoles, a number of priority console sites are identified for the talkgroup call. If sufficient bandwidth (e.g., call units of bandwidth) is available (or made available) to each of the priority console sites, the call is granted. Alternatively or additionally, the call may be granted to certain non-priority console sites if bandwidth is available. Bandwidth may be made available for critical talkgroups at certain sites by pre-empting non-critical talkgroups being monitored at those sites.

Method of call control for console sites monitoring critical talkgroups in a packet-based communication system

Methods for reserving call units of bandwidth and for using the reserved call units to manage call requests are disclosed. Reservations are requested by a first host device (e.g., zone controller) for a path of a packet network communication system. The reservations are granted or denied by the network based on the availability of the requested bandwidth. Once a reservation has been obtained, the number of call units of bandwidth associated with the reservation may be reduced or increased by the network based, for example, on link failures, repairs, etc. Call requests are granted or denied by the zone controller based on the path(s) needed for the call, the number of reserved call units associated with the path(s) and the amount of call units required to support the call. If there are sufficient reserved call units to support the call, the call may proceed by sending, from a second host device (e.g., repeater), a message that is distributed over the number of units of bandwidth needed for the call.

Method for managing bandwidth in a packet-based communication system using call unit reservations

A method of handling busy calls, performed by a controlling entity (ZC1) in a multiple-zone system, includes the steps of issuing (201) a request to participate in a call to one or more participating zones (101, 103, and 105) and concluding (203) that at least one zone of the participating zones (101, 103, and 105) is unable to grant the call, thereby resulting in a busy status for the call. The controlling entity (ZC1) informs the participating zones (101, 103 and 105) of the busy status. A resource available notification is received (209) from a first zone, and the controlling entity (ZC1) determines (211) if a predetermined number of the participating zones (101, 103, and 105) have indicated ability to grant the call. When at least one zone of the one or more participating zones has not indicated ability to grant the call, the controlling entity (ZC1) issues (213) a still busy notification to the first zone, which still busy notification indicates that the call still has a busy status.
