Various medical devices and methods for cutting, evacuating and/or performing work on tissue are provided. The devices and methods may utilize a reciprocating mechanism or motor powered by suction from a vacuum source. The medical devices and methods may be used on tissue in various regions of a patient's body and for treating various conditions, e.g., for performing a polypectomy.

Devices and methods for cutting tissue

Various medical devices and methods for cutting and/or evacuating tissue are provided. The devices and methods may utilize a reciprocating mechanism or motor powered by suction from a vacuum source. The medical devices and methods may be used on tissue in various regions of a patient's body and for treating various conditions, e.g., for performing a polypectomy or discectomy.

An auger is axially fixed to and positioned within a cutter. The auger and cutter advance at the same time relative to a contact structure placed against a vessel, penetrating the wall of the vessel and cutting a tissue plug. When the auger and the cutter are retracted from the vessel wall, the tissue plug is retained by the auger and cutter and removed from the vessel wall. The auger and the cutter thus create an opening in the vessel wall, without the need for a prior incision in that wall.

Method and apparatus for creating an opening in the wall of a tubular vessel

An integrated anastomosis tool may include an effector that both makes an opening in the wall of a target vessel and connects a graft vessel to the target vessel. The connection between the graft vessel and the target vessel may be compliant, and may be achieved by deploying a plurality of connectors such as staples into tissue. The effector may include a cutter assembly and a connection module that are independently actuatable. The cutter assembly and/or the connection module may be cable-actuated.

Compliant anastomosis system

One method for closing an opening in tissue may include providing a substantially continuous solid staple having a plurality of tines and a longitudinal centerline, plastically deforming the staple to a splayed configuration; penetrating at least one tine into tissue in proximity to the opening; and plastically deforming the staple to a closed configuration. Another method for closing an opening in tissue may include providing a staple having a plurality of tines; plastically deforming the staple to a splayed configuration by applying force in the distal direction against a proximal surface of the staple; penetrating at least one tine into tissue in proximity to the opening; and plastically deforming the staple from the splayed configuration to a closed configuration by applying force in the distal direction against a proximal surface of the staple.

Method for closing an opening in tissue with a splayable staple

An exemplary medical apparatus insertable into the vasculature of a patient at an insertion point for treating a defect in the heart, may include an elongated, flexible driver sufficient in length to extend from the insertion point to the defect in the heart; and a staple frangibly attached to the distal end of the driver. Another exemplary medical apparatus may include a catheter sufficient in length to extend from the insertion point to the patent foramen ovale; a housing attached to the distal end of the catheter; a driver extending into the housing; and a staple frangibly attached to the driver. Another exemplary medical apparatus may include a steering catheter sufficient in length to extend from the insertion point to the patent foramen ovale; an end effector attached to the distal end of the steering catheter, the end effector having a cross-section sufficiently small to allow it to be moved through the vasculature to the patent foramen ovale; and a staple held by the end effector, wherein the staple is frangibly separable from and deployable out of the end effector to close the patent foramen ovale.

Heart defect closure apparatus

A surgical apparatus useful in closing an atrial appendage may include a clamp with a first arm and a second arm spaced apart from one another along at least a portion of their length, pins associated with the first arm, and a locking plate associated with the second arm. The clamp may have an open position in which the arms are spaced apart from one another, and a closed position in which the arms are closer to one another. To close the atrial appendage with the apparatus, the clamp in the open position may be placed relative to the atrial appendage such that it is located between the arms, and the clamp may be moved to the closed position, where that motion may cause the pins to penetrate the atrial appendage and engage the locking plate.

An anastomosis device includes a deployable section that may be connected to a discard section. The deployable section may be configured to expand in two substantially orthogonal directions during deployment. The deployable section may include a ring that includes one or more expandable elements.

An integrated tool may be used to perform a tracheotomy. The integrated tool may include a trocar and a delivery mechanism, where the delivery mechanism may deploy a stoma stent. The trocar may be actuated impulsively.

A system for closing an opening in tissue may include an end effector that holds a staple, where the staple is plastically deformed to a splayed configuration for engaging tissue, then plastically deformed to a closed condition for closing the opening. The system may include one or more butterfly members configured to register the opening to the end effector.

Vascular closure system

An piercing member is axially fixed to and positioned within a cutter, both of which are components of a stand-alone tool for creating an opening in the wall of a tubular tissue structure. The stand-alone tool includes an impulse source connected to the piercing member and to the cutter. An actuator is operationally connected to the impulse source, where the actuator causes the impulse source to release energy to and provide an impulse to the piercing member and the cutter. The tool may be configured to make multiple openings in the tissue of the same patient. Where the tool is configured to make multiple openings in the tissue of the same patient, the tool allows the piercing member and cutter to be moved back to an initial pre-deployment position after each use.

Tool for creating an opening in tissue

A method for closing an opening in tissue, such as an opening in heart tissue, may include moving a housing to a location in proximity to the opening, registering the housing to the opening, and deploying a staple from the housing into tissue in proximity to the opening. The opening in heart tissue may be a patent foramen ovale, atrial septal defect, or other opening. The housing may be moved to the opening through the vasculature, utilizing a guidewire, steering catheter, or other mechanism.

Tissue closure system

A method for performing anastomosis between a graft vessel and a target vessel with an integrated anastomosis tool may include actuating at least one control on the integrated anastomosis tool to create an opening in the target vessel and complete an anastomosis with the target vessel. Another method for performing anastomosis may include creating an opening in intact tissue of the target vessel with an integrated anastomosis tool; and deploying an anastomosis device with the integrated anastomosis tool. The anastomosis may be performed with an anastomosis device, such as an anastomosis device having a deployable section detachable from a discard section.

Method of performing anastomosis

A single integrated tool is used both to create an opening in a vessel wall and deploy an anastomosis device into that opening, thereby simplifying an anastomosis procedure such as a coronary artery bypass graft procedure. The creation of the opening and deployment of the anastomosis device may be actuated with a single control.
