A gas-lift well includes a casing extending down a wellbore, production tubing extending within the casing, a gas system for inserting compressed gas into an annular space between the casing and the production tubing, at least one gas-lift input, and at least one fluid flow regime modifier. The at least one gas-lift input extends from the annular space, through the production tubing, and to an interior of the production tubing. The at least one fluid flow regime modifier is disposed within the production tubing and is at least partially within a fluid column of the production tubing, the at least one fluid flow regime modifier is configured to reduce fluid fallback and impart a turbulent flow regime to at least a portion of the fluid column.

Gas lift systems, flow regime modifiers, and related methods

An electric submersible pumping system includes a motor filled with motor lubricant, a pump driven by the motor, and a fluid expansion chamber connected to the motor. The fluid expansion chamber includes a seal bag filled with a seal bag lubricant and a bellows contained within the seal bag. The bellows includes an interior in fluid communication with the motor and an exterior in fluid communication with the seal bag lubricant.

A system for the resilience of an electric submersible pumping system to a transient power interruption includes a power backup connected to the variable speed drive of the pumping system. A method for controlling the electric submersible pump during the transient power interruption includes connecting a variable speed drive to a power source, charging one or more rechargeable batteries within the power backup, and connecting the power backup to the variable speed drive. The method continues with the steps of operating the motor with the variable speed drive, detecting a disruption in AC power from the power source to the variable speed drive, and applying power from the power backup to the variable speed drive to operate the motor during the transient interruption in electrical power.

System and method for managing transient power disruptions on ESP motor drives

Systems and methods for communicating between surface equipment and a downhole tool installed in a well. First and second toroidal transformers are positioned around an inner one of a pair of coaxial structural members of a well completion (e.g., a pump rod and tubular, or a tubular and a well casing) which are electrically coupled to form an electrical circuit. A transmitter generates a data signal which is applied to the first toroidal transformer, causing a corresponding electrical current to be induced in the circuit, which then induces the data signal on the second toroidal transformer. A receiver coupled to the second toroidal transformer receives the data signal induced on the second toroidal transformer. The transmitter and receiver may be components of transceivers that may communicate bidirectionally. Additional toroidal coils and transceiver may be provided to communicate with equipment at additional locations in the well.

Systems and methods for wireless communication in a well

Systems and methods for wireless power transmission in a well, wherein first and second structural members of a well completion are electrically connected to form an electrical circuit, with first and second toroidal transformers positioned around the second structural member at different axial locations. A power source coupled to the first toroidal transformer is configured to generate an output voltage which is applied to the first toroidal transformer, inducing a corresponding electrical current in the electrical circuit. This in turn induces a second voltage on the second toroidal transformer, which is provided to a downhole tool. The tool may include conditioning circuitry, which rectifies the received power and charges a battery. The downhole electric tool is then operated using the received power.

Systems and methods for wireless power transmission in a well

A submersible pumping system has an electric motor, a rotary hydraulic pump driven by the electric motor, and a linear hydraulic pump that is configured to move a production fluid. The rotary hydraulic pump produces a pressurized working fluid that drives the linear hydraulic pump. In another aspect, a method is disclosed for controlling the temperature of an electric motor within a submersible pumping system disposed in a wellbore. The method includes the steps of circulating motor lubricant through a hydraulically driven production pump to reduce the temperature of the motor lubricant.

A submersible pumping system for use in producing wellbore fluids from a wellbore within a subterranean formation includes a motor and a pump driven by the motor to produce the wellbore fluids. The pumping system further includes a self-supporting power cable connected to the pump. The self-supporting power cable includes a plurality of conductors and a plurality of strength members. A method of deploying and retrieving a submersible pumping system in a wellbore includes the steps of connecting a wireline to the submersible pumping system, connecting a self-supporting power cable to the submersible pumping system, lowering the submersible pumping system into the wellbore while the weight of the submersible pumping system is borne by the wireline. The method continues with the step of locating the submersible pumping system on a landing assembly, disconnecting the wireline from the submersible pumping system, and retrieving the wireline from the wellbore without removing the submersible pumping system from the wellbore.

The tubular includes a first end arranged at a surface of a formation, a second end terminating in the wellbore, and an intermediate portion. A liquid supply conduit includes a terminal end arranged at the first end of the tubular and a gas supply conduit includes a terminal end portion arranged at the first end of the tubular.

A shaft coupling is useful for connecting a distal end of a first shaft with a proximal end of a second shaft. The shaft coupling includes a body, a first receiving chamber within the body and a second receiving chamber within the body. The first receiving chamber receives the distal portion of the first shaft and the second receiving chamber receives the proximal portion of the second shaft. A pin maintains the axial positioning between the body and the distal portion of the first shaft. An axially adjustable connection is used between the second receiving chamber and the proximal portion of the second shaft.

A volumetric compensator assembly for use in the seal section of a pumping system includes an envelope bladder that in turn includes a flexible top sheet and a bottom sheet connected to the top sheet along a pair of side seams and an end seam. The volumetric compensator assembly also has a bladder support tube and the envelope bladder is coiled around the bag support tube.

The surface-based separation assembly includes a gas-liquid separator configured to receive a fluid stream, and configured to separate the fluid stream into a gas stream and a mixed stream of at least two liquids. The liquid-liquid separator is configured to receive the mixed stream from the gas-liquid separator, and is configured to separate the mixed stream into a first liquid stream and a second liquid stream. The assembly further includes a rotatable shaft including a first portion extending through the gas-liquid separator, and a second portion extending through the liquid-liquid separator. The rotatable shaft is configured to induce actuation of the gas-liquid separator and the liquid-liquid separator.

An electric submersible pumping system for use in pumping fluids from a wellbore includes a motor, a pump driven by the motor, and a fluid expansion module connected to the motor. The fluid expansion module includes a piston seal housing and a piston assembly contained within the piston seal housing. The piston assembly includes a piston body having an exterior surface, a plurality of seals connected to the exterior surface of the piston body and a pressure equalization system. The pressure equalization system reduces a pressure differential between fluid in an annular space between the plurality of seals and fluid surrounding the first piston assembly.

A fluid intake for a system includes a support structure defining an interior space and configured for fluid to pass into the interior space. The system includes a pump for pumping fluid from a well including a well casing defining a passageway for the fluid to flow therethrough in a flow direction. The fluid includes liquid and gas. A porous member extends over a portion of the support structure. The fluid intake extends inside the passageway in the flow direction such that the porous member and the well casing define an annular space therebetween. The porous member defines pores for liquid to wick through. The interior space is in flow communication with the pores such that liquid wicking through the porous member passes into the interior space.

A downhole manifold assembly includes a manifold body defining a longitudinal axis and having a first end face, a second end face, and an outer surface extending therebetween. A fluid circuit is defined in the manifold body and includes a plurality of axially extending fluid passages and a plurality of radially extending fluid passages. The radially extending fluid passages extend to the outer surface of the manifold body. Each radially extending fluid passage defines a respective aperture in the outer surface. The manifold assembly also includes a control valve coupled to the manifold body. The control valve is positionable between a first position in which a flow of pressurized fluid is channeled through the fluid circuit in a first direction, and a second position in which the flow is reversed and the pressurized fluid is channeled through the fluid circuit in a second direction.
