A power supply converter and a method for adjusting a threshold voltage in the power supply converter. The circuit includes first and second switches having current conducting terminals commonly connected together to form a node. An energy storage element may be connected to the node and a zero current detection comparator may be connected to the node. A first voltage may be provided at the control terminal of the first switch that turns it off. After the first switch is off, determining whether the first switch turned off before or after the current in the energy storage element has reached zero. This may be accomplished by determining whether the voltage at the first node is positive or negative. If the voltage at the first node is negative, the threshold voltage is increased and if the voltage at the first node is positive the threshold voltage is decreased.

Power supply converter and method

An enhanced transistor gate drive is disclosed in which a pair of Kelvin sense leads measure the voltage potential across at the gate and source of the transistor. The difference in the voltage potential of the Kelvin sense lead from the gate and the Kelvin sense lead of the source is provided to a voltage controlled current source, which compares the output of the voltage differentiator to an oscillating voltage input. Changes to the voltage difference between the Kelvin sense connectors will result in more or less voltage being applied at the gate of the transistor, thereby parasitic inductance in the transistor from causing the device to switch on and off.

Enhanced transistor gate drive

An alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) power converter comprises a first electrical path in a primary circuit having an inductor coupled in series with a first primary winding and a first switch to a ground connection. A second electrical path in the primary circuit has the inductor coupled in series with a second primary winding and a second switch to the ground connection. A secondary circuit is electromagnetically coupled to the primary circuit. A controller operates the first switch and the second switch in a predetermined manner to induce a current in the secondary circuits.

Apparatus and methods for power conversion

A technique for addressing a low line voltage condition in an information handling system includes determining whether a magnitude of an input voltage of a power supply unit (PSU) is below a first threshold for at least a first time period. The technique also includes adjusting, based on the determining, a magnitude of a reference voltage of the PSU to track a magnitude of an output voltage of the PSU when the input voltage is below the first threshold for at least the first time period.

Techniques for handling low line voltage Conditions in power supply units

An information handling system includes a power converter having a first switched inductor to supply current to a load. A second switched inductor is inductively coupled to the first switched inductor. A control circuit activates the second switched inductor in response to a change in the power requirements of the load, so as to remove energy stored in the first switched inductor and thereby regulate the output voltage of the power converter when load current is stepped downwards.

Coupled inductor output regulation

A cost optimized redundant power supply consists of a plurality of power units (PUs) wherein each PU has two AC front ends. Each of the two AC front ends receive power from separate AC power sources, and each produce an isolated DC output. The isolated DC outputs from the two AC front ends are coupled to an input of one DC back end, e.g., DC-to-DC converter. Optimally, each of the AC front ends may have a power capacity of TRP/(N+1) and the DC back end may have a power capacity of TRP/N, where TRP=Total Redundant Power or the maximum system power required for operation and N is the number of PUs of the power supply.

Cost optimized redundant power supply with dual AC inputs

For controlling a direct current to direct current (DC-DC) converter, a controller individually switches a charge switch and a discharge switch to control a duty cycle, thereby providing a regulated DC output. A delay in switching each one of the charge and discharge switches results in a formation of a DC error in the regulated DC output. The controller adjusts the duty cycle by adding a delay compensation to substantially eliminate the DC error. The delay compensation substantially eliminates the DC error by decreasing an average value of the regulated DC output to offset an increase in the average value of the regulated DC output without the delay compensation.

Delay compensation for hysteretic control

An information handling system has a power supply using a DC-to-DC buck converter. The DC-to-DC buck converter maintains continuous mode of operation over a wide range of output currents by adding more inductance to the buck converter circuit when the load current is below a certain value(s). A sensing circuit may determine load current and at the certain value(s) more inductance (increased inductance value) may be added to the buck converter circuit so as to main a continuous mode of operation. When the load current increases above the certain value, the extra inductance may be removed (inductance value decreased). Thus, the buck converter may operate most efficiently and remain in the continuous operation mode for a wider range of load currents.

Extending the continuous mode of operation for a buck converter

An information handling system ('IHS') includes a system board and a power supply unit coupled to the system board. The power supply unit includes a switching power regulator. The switching power regulator includes an inductor coupled to an output, a capacitor coupled to the inductor, a switch, coupled to the inductor, for regulating power supplied by the power supply unit in response to a duty cycle, and a control circuit, coupled to the switch, for supplying current to the inductor while the switch is closed and charging the capacitor while the switch is open.

Information handling system including a power supply unit with a switching regulator that reduces transient load release

An information handling system (IHS) includes a system board and a power supply unit, coupled to the system board. The power supply unit includes a power converter for supplying power to a first output and a second output, a switch, coupled to the power converter, for regulating power supplied to the first and the second outputs in response to a duty cycle, and a control circuit, coupled to the switch, for receiving an indication of current level at the second output and in response to the indication of current level at the second output, adjusting the duty cycle.
