A method for waking up an implantable medical device from a dormant state, an implantable medical device, and a system that includes such an implantable medical device and an external device. The implantable medical device is woken up from a dormant state by sending a modulated wakeup signal via a wireless link from an external device. The modulated wakeup signal is demodulated by way of a demodulator circuitry of the implantable medical device so as to produce a demodulated wakeup signal. The demodulator circuitry is permanently ready for operation. An awake state of the implantable medical device is then activated in response to the demodulated wakeup signal.

The invention relates to methods by which radio signals can be transmitted to, and received by, a radio receiver such that the receiver consumes very little power from a battery or energy source. The invention also relates to methods by which radio signals, modulated with data information, can be produced by a transmitter that consumes very little power. The invention is applicable not only to medical implants, but any application requiring a radio receiver to operate with very low power consumption.

Radio communications system designed for a low-power receiver

A low phase noise YIG oscillator based phase locked loop couples an output frequency to a delay line discriminator to provide a phase noise feedback signal to a wideband tuning port of the YIG oscillator. A delay line in the delay line oscillator may be implemented with either a resonant circuit or a bandpass filter of sufficient bandwidth so that the output frequency and phase noise sidebands are not attenuated. The resonant circuit may be implemented as a YIG sphere integrated into the YIG oscillator in the same magnetic path as the YIG sphere in the oscillator circuitry.

Low noise YIG oscillator based phase locked loop

A reduced lock time phase locked loop has a speed up circuit with an operational amplifier to amplify a differential voltage across a filter resistor of an RC noise filter, the RC noise filter coupling a coarse tune voltage to a VCO. The amplifed differential voltage is applied to the bases of a pair of opposite polarity transistors, the emitters of the transistors being coupled to a filter capacitor in the RC noise filter for rapid charging/discharging. Alternatively the amplified differential voltage is applied to a pair of parallel, opposite polarity diodes coupled to the filter capacitor for rapid charging/discharging.
