A computer-implemented system configured to describe the relationship between a first Namespace and a second Namespace is provided. The system includes a containment relationship identifying a direct relationship between a first object of the first Namespace and a second object of the first Namespace. Moreover, the system includes a junction relationship linking the second object of the first Namespace to a first object of the second Namespace. In one embodiment, the system is configured to facilitate the recovery of information based on the descriptions of the Namespaces that is maintained.

Configuring a data protection system

An administrative authority for virtual machines can send one or more delegated policy settings to a virtual machine manager. The virtual machine manager can in turn send management instructions that include the one or more policy settings to one or more virtual machine hosts. As such, a user's request for a virtual machine at a virtual machine host can be granted or denied based on the delegated policy settings. The policy settings can be updated periodically, and can include additional information about starting, stopping, expiring, saving, or even deleting virtual machines by particular users, as well as users accessing from particular locations. In addition, an agent operating at the virtual machine host can monitor and report virtual machine activity, to ensure unauthorized virtual machines are quickly stopped and reviewed until authorized.

Managing virtual machines with system-wide policies

The embodiments contemplate a system and method for a restriction of virtual machines for a group of one or more users. A predefined policy may include a restriction related to the group, as well as a measure of enforcement to initiate in the event of a violation of the restriction. The measure of enforcement may include a warning message or denial of resources. The restriction may be resource-based, time-based, machine-based, or a combination. The restriction may be a group-level restriction, in which the entire group actions are monitored, or a user-level restriction, in which the user's actions are monitored. In the event a user is assigned to more than one group, the policies of each group are assigned a priority level. The priority level dictates the restriction as well as the measure of enforcement.

A method for creating a group plan for protecting an object located at a production location is provided. A selection of an object for which a group plan is to be created is received along with protection intents for the selected object. The protection intents are translated into a group plan for protecting the selected object.

Method, system, and apparatus for translating logical information representative of physical data in a data protection system

A method for detecting changes to a production location is provided. The method includes receiving a selection of a portion of the production location that is to be protected and identifying a larger portion of the production location that contains the selected portion of the production location. Upon identifying the larger portion, a routine is created for evaluating the identified larger portion of the production location for changes. That routine is performed in order to detect changes to the production location.

Method, system, and apparatus for creating saved searches and auto discovery groups for a data protection system

A method for protecting protectable objects located at a production location is provided. A Namespace, representative of a plurality of protectable objects, is provided to a user for selection. A selection of at least a portion of the Namespace is received and that selected portion is mapped to at least one protectable object. A plan for protecting the mapped protectable object is created, and using that plan the protectable object is protected.

Method, system, and apparatus for configuring a data protection system

A system for upgrading software has multiple clients coupled to an upgrade server. The clients store an old version of software. The upgrade server stores both the old version of software and a new version of software. The upgrade server creates an upgrade file from the old and new versions of the software such that the upgrade file is smaller than the new version. The upgrade server compares old character strings from the old version with new character strings from the new version to identify matching sections. The upgrade server derives a two-dimensional table containing multiple entries, whereby each entry represents a length of a longest common substring beginning at a first position in the old character string and at a second position in the new character string. The upgrade server then ascertains the longest common substring from the table. The upgrade server inserts headers into the upgrade file to distinguish between matching and non-matching sections. For matching sections, only the header is included and the section is omitted. The clients receive the upgrade file and begin processing the file to reconstruct the new version of software from the new sections included in the upgrade file and from the matching sections obtained locally from the stored old version of software.
