A light emitting device includes a backplane, an array of light emitting diodes attached to a front side of the backplane, a transparent conductive layer contacting front side surfaces of the light emitting diodes, an optical bonding layer located over a front side surface of the transparent conductive layer, a transparent cover plate located over a front side surface of the optical bonding layer, and a black matrix layer including an array of openings therethrough, and located between the optical bonding layer and the transparent cover plate.

Luminaires that simultaneously illuminate a support surface (for example, a floor) and the surface to which the luminaires are mounted (for example, a ceiling) and methods for manufacturing the same are disclosed. Embodiments include luminaires that divide the light from a single light emitter (which may include one or more light sources such as LEDs) into a portion directed toward the luminaire's mounting surface and a portion directed toward the support surface. Some embodiments utilize a planar light guide with the light emitter mounted adjacent one edge, which in some embodiments is the internal edge of an aperture formed in the planar light guide. In some embodiments, one surface of the light guide includes grooves that internally reflect light toward the support surface while allowing a smaller amount of light to exit the light guide toward the mounting surface, and may be grouped according to the distance separating adjacent grooves.

Apparatuses and methods for efficiently directing light toward and away from a mounting surface

A light emitting device includes a backplane, an array of light emitting diodes attached to a front side of the backplane, a dielectric matrix layer located on the front side of the backplane and laterally surrounding the array of light emitting diodes, a transparent conductive layer contacting a front side surface of light emitting diodes within the array of light emitting diodes, and a patterned bus electrode layer electrically shorted to the transparent conductive layer and including an array of openings therein. Each light emitting diode within the array of light emitting diodes is located within an area of a respective opening through the patterned bus electrode layer. The patterned bus electrode layer can include at least one light-absorptive electrically conductive layer providing light absorption. Alternatively or additionally, the patterned bus electrode layer can include a reflective metal layer.

Light emitting diode array containing a multilayer bus electrode and method of making the same

Lenses and methods for directing light toward a side of light fixture, and methods for manufacturing the same, are disclosed. Embodiments include lenses with an optical axis and a first (e.g., upper) portion that is rotationally symmetric about the optical axis and a second (e.g., lower) portion that is rotationally asymmetric. The first/upper portion can include a cavity that receives an LED and directs light toward the second/lower portion. The asymmetric side can include a convex surface where the light exits the lens, the convex surface extending across the optical axis. Additional embodiments include a planar surface adjacent the convex surface, where the height of the lens decreases along the portion of the convex surface near the planar surface and along the planar surface as the distance from the optical axis increases. In further embodiments, the maximum height of the lens occurs between two horizontal sides of the lens.
