In a computer telecommunications network, firewalls protect a machine or network from undesired message transmissions. In the case of a firewall employed on a user side of the wireless link, a message rejected by the firewall has already consumed the wireless resources required to transmit. A system for protecting a mobile wireless user via a firewall employed at the wired line, or ISP side, of the wireless link in a wireless network allows a specific user profile to be provided for each user that is indicative of a desired firewall configuration corresponding to the mobile user. A firewall configuration is established at a firewall application in a wireless transceiver corresponding to the current location of the mobile user, and the same firewall configuration is established, via a wireless handoff, at a second wireless transceiver when the user is located in the area corresponding to the second wireless transceiver, thereby protecting a plurality of wireless users prior to wasteful wireless transmission of undesired messages.

Firewall protection for wireless users

A mobile station is coupled to a first base station via a first wireless connection while in the zone of the first base station zone. Through the first base station and in conjunction with a PPP session manager, the PPP session manager establishes a first link of a PPP session to a remote server across a data network having mobile station handoff capability. When moving into the zone of a second base station and in conjunction with the PPP session manager, the PPP session manager creates a second link of the PPP session. The first and second links take different paths through the data network. The PPP session manager releases the first link while preserving the PPP session.

Method and apparatus for simple PPP handoff for mobile users

Streaming audio and video (A/V) transmissions have become commonplace due to increasing data rates available over modem computer networks, and should occur at real-time or near real-time so that the user perceives an intelligible audio or video image. Lost or late frames can result in interference or distortion, and may be perceived as a 'blip' or 'pop' in the output sound or image. Wireless networks are particularly susceptible to such interference. Interference can be reduced by receiving a stream of symbols, arranging the symbols in a series of frames, and interleaving the symbols in one of the frames with symbols in an adjacent one of frames in the series of frames. In this manner, a frame that is dropped or arrives late over the wireless communication link will result in less distortion because some of the symbols will be available from the adjacent frames.

System and method for interleaving compressed audio/video (A/V) data frames

Method and apparatus are provided to prevent unneccessary execution of TCP/IP performance enhancing algorithms in a wireless communications network. The method includes monitoring acknowledgment message traffic between a sending unit and a receiving unit and preventing forwarding of an acknowledgment message to the sending unit when the acknowledgment message is a second duplicate acknowledgment message. The apparatus includes a first endpoint unit connected between a sending unit and a receiving unit. The first endpoint unit includes a monitor component to monitor acknowledgment message traffic between the sending unit and the receiving unit and a filter unit to prevent forwarding of a duplicate acknowledgment message to the sending unit until a predefined condition is met.

Packeting timeout spoofing in a wireless data communications network

A fingerprint sensor includes an array of fingerprint sensing elements; analog-to-digital (A/D) converters having a controllable range; a scanner to perform sequential A/D conversions of predetermined ones of the array of fingerprint sensing elements; and a range determining and setting circuit for controlling the range of the A/D converters based upon prior A/D conversions to thereby provide enhanced conversion resolution. A plurality of A/D converters are preferably used for simultaneously converting analog signals from a corresponding plurality of fingerprint sensing elements. The A/D converters may include at least one reference voltage input for permitting setting of first and second points of the range. The range scale determining and setting circuit may generate a histogram based upon prior A/D conversions. In addition, the range scale determining and setting circuit may set a default range for initial ones of the fingerprint sensing elements.
