A vehicle includes a starter motor having a dedicated power source, an electric machine, and a controller configured to, responsive to a command for the motor to start an engine, open a switch to isolate the motor and source from a network electrically connected with the machine, and responsive to voltages on both sides of the switch falling within a predetermined range, close the switch to charge the source.

A system and method for retrieving and displaying data from an onboard memory of an electronic control unit in a vehicle is disclosed. The electronic control unit includes at least one parameter identifier that defines an address for a first data structure. The first data structure includes information on the amount and location of the data in the nonvolatile memory, as well as a version document number corresponding to a version document stored in a scan tool. The scan tool can access the parameter identifier and onboard data by the entry of an identifier number. The retrieved data is inserted into the version document for display.

A method for detecting tie-up in an automatic transmission is provided. The rate of change of the output shaft acceleration is calculated by twice differentiating with respect to time the transmission output shaft speed. The calculated rate is then compared to a predetermined value, and each time the acceleration rate drops below the predetermined value, a controller stores the event in memory. If the acceleration rate drops below the predetermined value too frequently, a flag is set and indication of the transmission tie-up is prevented. When a predetermined amount of time passes, during which the acceleration rate does not drop below the predetermined value, the flag is cleared and indication of a tie-up is allowed. When the acceleration rate drops below the predetermined value, and the transmission is in a shift cycle and tie-up prevention flags are cleared, a transmission tie-up is indicated.

Automatic transmission control system with direct electronic swap-shift control

A modular electronic control system for a geared multiple-ratio transmission wherein pressure profiles for each ratio shift actuator are used to provide seamless transitions during both positive and negative engine torque conditions to improve shift feel and responsiveness to ratio change commands. The system provides shift staging for sequenced shifts between ratios as well as for so-called &ldquo;change-of-mind&rdquo; shifts in which a sequence shift is interrupted as a new destination gear is introduced. A constant ratio change occurs during sequenced shifts. A change-of-mind shift can be performed directly where the new destination gear is commanded immediately. Independent pressure profiles for each clutch involved in a commanded shift are used to accommodate various types of shifts.
