Continuous microwave-assisted segmented flow reactor for high-quality nanocrystal synthesis

The present application relates to apparatus and methods of reducing the cost of microchannel array production and operation. In a representative embodiment, a microchannel array can comprise a first lamina having one or more flanges and a plurality of elongated bosses. The one or more flanges can extend along a perimeter of the first lamina, the plurality of elongated bosses can at least partially define a plurality of first flow paths, and the first lamina can define at least one opening. The microchannel array can also comprise a second lamina having a plurality of second flow paths, and can define at least one opening. The second lamina can be disposed above the first lamina such that the second lamina encloses the first flow paths of the first lamina and the at least one opening of the first lamina is coaxial with the at least one opening of the second lamina.

Systems and methods of manufacturing microchannel arrays

Systems and methods for synthesizing high-quality nanocrystals via segmented, continuous flow microwave-assisted reactor were developed.

Apparatuses and methods for synthesizing nanoparticles are provided. Methods for synthesizing nanoparticles are provided comprising mixing at least two solutions comprising the components of the nanoparticles within a micromixer; exposing the resultant mixed, unreacted, azeotropic solution to ultrasound; and collecting the generated nanoparticles. Apparatuses are also provided for synthesizing nanoparticles comprising a micromixer in fluid connection with a continuous reactor comprising at least one inlet, at least one outlet, and an ultrasound horn oriented such that the acoustic energy is transferred to the fluid within the continuous reactor.

Controlled synthesis of nanoparticles using ultrasound in continuous flow

Embodiments of the present system and method are useful for chemical deposition, particularly continuous deposition of anti-reflective films. Disclosed systems typically comprise a micromixer and a microchannel applicator. A deposition material or materials is applied to a substrate to form a nanostructured, anti-reflective coating. Uniform and highly oriented surface morphologies of films deposited using disclosed embodiments are clearly improved compared to films deposited by a conventional batch process. In some embodiments, a scratch-resistant, anti-reflective coating is applied to a polycarbonate substrate, such as a lens. In certain embodiments, an anti-reflective coating is applied to a surface of a solar catalytic microreactor suitable for performing endothermic reactions, where energy is provided to the reactor by absorption of solar radiation. The composition and morphology of the material deposited on a substrate can be tailored. The process can be used at low temperatures as a post-deposition, high-temperature annealing step is obviated.

Nanostructured anti-reflective coatings for substrates

The present invention provides methods and apparatus for cleansing blood through hemodialysis by the process of diffusion across a membrane into dialysate. This dialyzer also removes solutes from the blood by a process of convection, where fluid and dissolved solutes pass through the membrane out of the blood. In one embodiment in accordance with the present invention, the MECS dialyzer uses a counter-flow between the dialysate and blood through a plurality of microchannels. The dialyzer comprises a plurality of flat semi-permeable membranes interleaved between microchannel sheets to define a plurality of flow channels. The stack of membranes and microchannel sheets are aligned and consolidated to form the MECS dialyzer. The MECS dialyzer acts as a flow manifold with ports and headers to collect the blood and dialysate and direct them to and from the microchannels.

A micromixer device has at least one fluid inlet channel and at least one fluid outlet channel. A plurality of pathways extend between the fluid inlet channel and the fluid outlet channel. The width of at least some of the plurality of pathways varies in a substantially parabolic manner along at least one dimension of the micromixer device.

The present disclosure describes devices useful for microscale fluid purification, separation, and synthesis. Such devices generally comprise a fluid membrane that separates two or more fluids flowing through plural microchannels operatively associated with the membrane. Often, the membrane is a semipermeable membrane, such as might be used with a filtration device, such as a dialyzer. Devices of the present invention can be combined with other microscale devices to make systems. For example, the devices may be coupled with one or more microchemical microfactories, one or more micromixers, one or more microheaters, etc. Examples of devices made according to the present invention included an oxygenator, a dialyzer, microheat exchangers, etc.

Microfluidic devices, particularly filtration devices comprising polymeric membranes, and methods for their manufacture and use

The present disclosure describes devices useful for microscale fluid purification, separation, and synthesis devices. Generally, such devices comprise a fluid membrane that separates two or more fluids flowing through plural microchannels operatively associated with the membrane. The fluids can both be liquids, gases, or a liquid and a gas, such as may be used for gas absorption into a liquid. Often, the membrane is a semipermeable membrane, such as might be used with a filtration device, such as a dialyzer. Devices of the present invention can be combined with other microscale devices to make systems. For example, the devices may be coupled with one or more microchemical microfactories, one or more micromixers, one or more microheaters; etc. Examples of devices made according to the present invention included an oxygenator, a dialzyer, microheat exchangers, etc. Particular materials had to be developed for use with certain embodiments of the device disclosed herein. For example, a new composite material was made comprising nanocrystalline cellulose filler and a polysulfone polymeric material. A dialyzer comprising the composite membrane also is disclosed. In order to make the nanocrystalline cellulose-polymer composite, a new method was devised for making an organic dispersion of nanocrystalline cellulose. The method comprised first forming an aqueous dispersion of nanocrystalline cellulose. A mixture was then formed comprising the aqueous dispersion and an organic liquid having a boiling point higher than water. The water was then selectively removed to form a second mixture comprising the nanocrystalline cellulose and the organic liquid.

Microfluidic devices, particularly filtration devices comprising polymeric membranes, and method for their manufacture and use

The present invention is related to hemodialysis, and more particularly, to a dialyser with improved efficiency of mass transfer across a dialysis membrane utilizing microchannel separation provided in accordance with embodiments of the present invention. In accordance with an embodiment, a dialyzer is provided comprising a plurality of semipermeable membrane sheets and a plurality of flow separators. The membrane sheets and flow are arranged in alternating configuration and coupled into a laminae stack defining a plurality of parallel microchannel layers. Each microchannel layer comprises a plurality of first microchannels and a plurality of second microchannels. The first and second microchannels of each microchannel layer are in fluid communication with each other via one of the plurality of membrane sheets therebetween. The MECS dialyzer is characterized as having a high surface to volume ratio and a high mass transfer coefficient.

Embodiments of an apparatus, system, and method for chemical synthesis and/or analysis are disclosed. One embodiment of a disclosed apparatus comprises a laminated, microfluidic structure defining a reactor and a separator. Such apparatuses, or portions thereof, generally have dimensions ranging from about 1 micrometer to about 100 micrometers. To implement synthetic processes, disclosed embodiments of the apparatus generally include at least one valve, and often plural, selectively actuatable valves. Detectors, including optical detectors, also can be used to detect product and other materials as they flow by, or are otherwise presented to, the detector. Individual apparatuses may be coupled both in series and in parallel to form a system for making chemical compounds. The apparatus is particularly useful for making compounds requiring iterative reaction schemes, and further can be used to make compounds having morphological structures that resemble the morphology of the apparatus itself, such as dendrimers.

Microchemical nanofactories

Methods of detecting bioactive compounds include exposing compounds to one or more classes of chromatophores and measuring or sensing associated changes in one or more of the chromatophores. Representative methods permit identification and quantification of neurotransmitters, toxins, hormones, and chemical warfare agents with or without prior knowledge of the content of a sample. In some examples, chromatophores based on Betta fish are used. Cytosensor apparatus using such chromatophores include means for exposing chromatophores to a sample and optical detection systems for assessing changes in chromatophore optical properties. Compounds can be identified or quantified based on a red-green-blue or hue saturation-value representations of transmitted or reflected light or based on other characterizations of transmitted or reflected light.

Methods for detecting bioactive compounds

A method for fabricating devices in a pre-assembled state comprising forming plural laminae, registering the laminae, and bonding the laminae one to another is described. The plural laminae contain the substructures and structures of the device. The substructures are coupled to structures and other substructures by fixture bridges in the pre-assembled state. The substructures of the device are dissociated by eliminating the fixture bridges. The plural laminae are registered and bonded to form the device either before or after the fixture bridges are eliminated. The fixture bridges can be eliminated in a variety of ways, including vaporization by electrical current, chemical dissolution, or thermochemical dissociation. One method to selectively bond the laminae together is by microprojection welding. Microprojection welding comprises forming laminae with projections that extend from at least one planar surface of the lamina. Bonding together of laminae at selected regions is accomplished by placing the laminae between electrodes and passing a current through the electrodes. The laminae are bonded together selectively at the sites of the projections. Another method for bonding lamina involve diffusion soldering at reduced bonding pressures and temperatures to minimize flow restriction within or to features.

Microlamination method for making devices

A method and system for making a monolithic intermetallic structure are presented. The structure is made from lamina blanks which comprise multiple layers of metals which are patternable, or intermetallic lamina blanks that are patternable. Lamina blanks are patterned, stacked and registered, and processed to form a monolithic intermetallic structure. The advantages of a patterned monolithic intermetallic structure include physical characteristics such as melting temperature, thermal conductivity, and corrosion resistance. Applications are broad, and include among others, use as a microreactor, heat recycling device, and apparatus for producing superheated steam. Monolithic intermetallic structures may contain one or more catalysts within the internal features.
