An augmentation amplifier is provided for aspirating gas flow from a surrounding medium. The amplifier connects at an inlet to a pressurized gas source and at an outlet to a gas receiver. Ambient gas from the medium supplements source provided compressed gas. The amplifier includes a Venturi conduit including a throat, an external cavity and a diffusion chamber. The conduit receives and flows pressurized gas from the inlet to the throat. The cavity receives ambient gas from the medium. The chamber expands and accelerates the pressurized gas from the throat to entrain the ambient gas via aspiration. The accelerated and ambient gases combine into an exhaust gas to the outlet.

Aspirator for air flow amplification

A continuously curved drawbar adapted to be mounted in a receiver hitch for extending the bed of a transport vehicle and enhancing load carrying capacity. The drawbar is formed as a box beam with a straight section at one end for receipt in the receiver hitch and rising above the receiver hitch at the second end. An adapter is provided at the end second for mounting a load. The curved drawbar reduces the amount of high-load impact transferred to the receiver hitch and resists permanent deflection.

A truck bed extender mountable in a receivable trailer hitch has an elongated support bar and a rack. The rack has a horizontal cross bar that is vertically adjustable on the support bar at the end opposite that where the support bar is secured to the receiver trailer hitch.

The handset also has a method for determining the amount of handovers between base stations (21, 22, 23) by use of dual channel quality thresholds (582, 590) which require a higher quality threshold for establishing communication with a base station and a reduction in channel quality before a handover to a new base station.

A TDMA communication system (100) comprises a two-way subscriber unit (112') and at least two base stations (104b and 104c). The subscriber unit monitors the strengths of signals (114') received from the base stations. As the subscriber unit roams within the area serviced by the communication system, the received signal strength will vary as the subscriber unit moves nearer to or farther from the base station that is transmitting the call. When the subscriber unit moves out of the range of the base station, the subscriber unit determines, based on certain predetermined criteria, with which base station to communicate.

Channel acquistion and handoff method and apparatus for a TDMA

A digital radio communication system includes a plurality of cells for providing two-way digital radio communication. Each of the cells utilizes communication frames having at least one inbound communication slot and at least one outbound communication slot. The frames of each cell are of uniform length. At least some of the cells have different bit rates than other cells. Information about the contiguous cells is provided to the radios operating within a cell. The radio includes a memory for storing information on adjacent cells and the radio can evaluate the signal of adjacent cells for determining an appropriate cell for hand-off purposes.

Subscribers participating in a call may communicate information un-impeded until the occurrence of an event (such as the expiration of a time interval). After detecting this event, the quality or intelligibility of the communicated information is repeatedly reduced to encourage the subscribers to voluntarily conclude the call.

The identity of a calling subscriber unit (106) is provided to a called subscriber unit(s) (106') by requiring the calling subscriber to identify itself (112) to a central station (102 and 104a-c) and request across to the communicaiton resources. The central station forwards the identity of the calling subscriber to the called subscriber (114), which enables the called subscriber to decide whether to respond to (answer) the call. If the called subscriber responds, an RF communication link between the two subscriber units is established. Conversely, if the called subscriber does not respond (or responds negatively), the calling subscriber unit is provided with a 'Busy' indication. Optionally, the central station may operate as a system-wide message recorder to store messages from calling subscribers for non-responding (Busy) subscribers. In this way, a calling subscriber may leave a message for later retrieval.

An improved duplex time division multiplexed (TDM) communication system is provided while conserving spectrum and efficiency. To accommodate two voice signals on one channel, the time allocated in a channel for brief listener voice acknowledgements is short; the time allocated for talker transmission is long. Moreover, the coding rate for the listener is slower than for the talker. The slot allocation can be switched whereby whoever is the dominant talker will maintain the longer slot.

Spectrally efficient TDM duplex communication system

A two-way radio includes a receiver having a squelch circuit and a selective calling decoder. A transmitter is connected to an inhibit circuit. The inhibit circuit is responsive to the selective calling decoder for permitting transmission after reception of the radio's ID code. The inhibit circuit inhibits further transmissions if the squelch circuit indicates loss of carrier for more than a predetermined time during receive.

Two-way radio for use in a communication system

A signalling and control protocol is provided wherein each subscriber unit (106) operating within a communication system (100) must transmit a request (200, 200' or 200') to communicate to a central station. If a communication channel is available, the central station returns a channel grant (210), which includes a time code representing a time duration during which the requesting subscriber may communicate. After receiving the channel grant (210), the subscriber unit may communicate for a time interval not exceeding the time duration, and, immediately prior to the expiration of the time duration, the subscriber unit may itself provide a warning tone indicating the impending loss of the communication channel. Conversely, if a communication channel is not available, the central station provides a busy message (216), which includes a code (218) representing the requesting subscriber unit's position is a call request queue.

Signalling and control protocol for a communication system

A radio communication system includes a base station and a plurality of remote units. The remote units can be operated in one of several modes. In the Message Storage mode, a telephone or remote unit caller is verbally informed that the called remote unit is not receiving calls, and the caller is then given the option to store a voice or numeric message for later transmission to the called remote unit. If a caller enters an Override code, however, the system attempts to establish voice communication between the caller and the called remote unit. In the Call Screening mode, the caller's message is stored in the base station and, simultaneously, forwarded to the called remote unit. During reception of the message, the called remote unit can 'pickup' the call and begin normal voice communications with the caller. When a remote unit changes from the Message Storage mode to some other mode, its stored messages are automatically forwarded to the remote unit. If the remote unit is busy, out of radio transmission range, or doesn't respond to a call, the caller is given an opportunity to store a message.

A stretchable, flexible cargo strap assembly comprises an elongated, stretchable first member having the properties of generating restoring force when stretched from a relaxed condition to a tensioned condition, and an elongated second member having a portion which coextends with at least a portion of the first member. The second member is secured to the first member by a plurality of securing members distributed at two or more longitudinally spaced locations along the coextending portions of the first and second members and intermediate the ends of said members, for substantially inhibiting or limiting relative longitudinal movement of the first and second members at these locations while providing for such movement between these locations. The second member is extendable, by stretching of the assembly, to an extended position in which the end-to-end distance of the second member is at least about 1.2 times the end-to-end distance which the second member exhibits when the assembly is in an unstretched condition, and develops a greater resistance to extension than said first member, but only after extension at least to this extended position.
