Ignition enhancer coating compositions for azide propellant

A pyrotechnic gas generating composition comprising a fuel and an oxidizer, the composition upon combustion generating a gas and a non-gaseous composition comprising a metallic salt or oxide, the metallic salt or oxide being a highly flowable liquid at the flame temperature of the composition upon combustion, and a viscosity modifier which is present in an amount to render the liquid substantially non-flowable at the flame temperature. Also disclosed is a method of inflating an inflatable device, such as a vehicle safety restraint, comprising the step of substantially completely inflating the device with the gaseous composition products of combustion of the pyrotechnic composition, whereby the metallic salt or oxide is substantially prevented from entering the device.

Pyrotechnic composition and method of inflating an inflatable device

An all-pyrotechnic inflator, for generating an inflating gas, includes: an elongated enclosure means, a linear ignitor, and a pyrotechnic material. The elongated enclosure means has a longitudinal axis and an outlet means for passage of the gas. The linear ignitor is arranged within the enclosure means and extends along at least part of the longitudinal axis of the enclosure means. The pyrotechnic material is disposed within the enclosure means and extends along at least part of the longitudinal extent of the enclosure means for combustion and generation of gas upon ignition by the linear ignitor. The enclosure means further includes an inner wall, an outer wall, a nozzle means, and a means for maintaining substantially constant pressure during generation of the gas. The pyrotechnic material is the sole source of the inflating gas.

All-pyrotechnic inflator

The air bag safety system is a self-contained, modular apparatus including: an inflatable bag, an inflating unit connected to the bag, and a sensor. The inflating unit provides gas for inflating the bag. The sensor is disposed adjacent to the apparatus and is responsive to a predetermined level of deceleration of a vehicle for activating the inflating unit. The system also includes a fail-safe interlock to prevent the sensor from activating the inflating unit when the system is not properly mounted or internal parts fail in service.

A pyrotechnic composition comprising: About 1 to 20% by weight of a thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of polyacetal resins, polyvinyl acetate resins and mixtures thereof; About 30 to 80% by weight of an alkali metal chlorite, such as sodium chlorite or potassium chlorite; and About 20 to 60% by weight of a coolant selected from the group consisting of calcium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide or mixtures thereof. The invention also relates to a method of inflating an inflatable automobile safety restraint comprising the step of substantially completely inflating the restraint with the gaseous composition products of combustion of a composition comprising: About 1 to 20% by weight of a thermoplastic resin selected from the group consisting of polyacetal resins, polyvinyl acetate resins and mixtures thereof; About 30 to 80% by weight of an alkali metal chlorite, such as sodium chlorite or potassium chlorite; and About 20 to 60% by weight of a coolant selected from the group consisting of calcium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide or mixtures thereof.

Chlorite containing pyrotechnic composition and method of inflating an

A light, portable, miniaturized tire inflator adapted to fit in a limited space, such as in a tire well for a deflated, space-saving tire in a trunk of an aubomobile, and adapted to be carried or held in one hand. The tire inflator includes: a pyrotechnic material, an ignitor mechanism, a pressure vessel, and a nozzle. The pyrotechnic material generates an inflating gas upon burning to inflate a tire without a source of stored fluid. The ignitor mechanism is located adjacent to the pyrotechnic material to ignite and cause the pyrotechnic material to burn. The pressure vessel holds the pyrotechnic material. The pressure vessel has a tire end and a pyrotechnic end. The nozzle is mounted on the tire end of the pressure vessel. The nozzle is adapted to be connected directly to a valve of the tire. In one embodiment, connection of the nozzle to the tire valve activates the ignitor mechanism.

Pyrotechnic tire inflator

Apparatus for variably controlling the burn time of a fixed amount of gas generating material used for inflating purposes. Gas developed by combustion of the gas generating material passes through a conduit. A blocking means is provided which, when selectively disposed in the conduit, decreases the cross-sectional area thereof and partially blocks the flow of the generated gas therethrough. The burn time of the gas generating material then decreases and the mass flow rate of the generated gas through the conduit is increased. The apparatus is especially adapted for use with motor vehicle passive restraint systems wherein, upon impact of the vehicle, a bag is rapidly inflated by the gas to protect passengers or other mobile objects of the vehicle.
