A packaging assembly is disclosed in which an article is supported in a suspended position in an outer container during shipping. The article is sandwiched between a pair of cushions, each cushion including a noninflated central web and a pair of inflated sidewalls and end walls. The sidewalls and end walls of the bottom cushion project away from the central web downwardly and outwardly toward the bottom edges of the outer container. The sidewalls and end walls of the upper cushion project away from the central web upwardly and outwardly toward the top edges of the outer container. The sidewalls and end walls of the two cushions together define flexible arches which project in all of the orthogonal directions of the outer container, protecting the article against an impact force in any direction.

Packaging cushion and packaging assemblies incorporating same

A packaging device is disclosed for forming packaging cushions of the type that include a plastic bag filled with a solid foam, and wherein the cushions are initially formed of a plastic bag filled with a foamable material that reacts and then hardens to form solid foam. The device comprises means for advancing a sheet of plastic film material that has been center-folded to form a doubled web with one closed edge defined by the center fold and one open edge defined by the adjacent edges of the sheet. Means are included for injecting a foamable composition into the center-folded web between the two folded portions of the sheet, as are means for forming a substantially linear seal along the open edge and substantially parallel to the open edge to thereby longitudinally seal the open edge of the web. The invention further includes means for periodically interrupting the linear seal to provide an unsealed portion along the otherwise sealed edge, and means for transversely sealing the web after foamable composition has been injected, and for concurrently separating a formed and filled bag from the advanced film material.

Compact packaging device for forming foam filled cushions for packaging

There is provided an inflatable packaging cushion for protecting an article and adapted to the shape and dimensions of an enclosed container. The inflatable packaging cushion has a plurality of inflatable chambers such that the sides and corners of the article are cushioned by the inflatable chambers. The inflatable chambers are interconnected through tie straps whereby at least one tie strap connects each chamber to an adjacent chamber. Each inflatable chamber includes a filling means for at least partially inflating each chamber with a filler medium. The inflatable chambers may assume various forms, depending on the shape of the article to be cushioned and the enclosed container. Additionally, there is provided a shipping container which includes a box and an inflatable packaging cushion for protecting an article adapted to the shape and dimensions of the box.

Inflatable package for protecting an article

A dispensing apparatus for serially dispensing plastic bags from a wound roll of continuous flexible plastic bags joined along perforated severance lines. A container is provided which is adapted to receive the wound roll of plastic bags. The container has a bottom, a pair of opposed sides having an inwardly facing flange extending therefrom, and a separating tongue projecting outward from the bottom. The flanges define a self-threading slide for threading the plastic bags from the wound roll along a predetermined path onto the separating tongue. The separating tongue separates the plastic bags from the wound roll as the plastic bags engage the separation tongue along a predetermined path of travel. A mounting bracket cooperates with the bottom to mount the container to a solid surface in a plurality of different positions while maintaining the desired orientation of the container, to ensure that the wound roll is biased against the bottom and the flanges for self-braking of the wound roll and for limiting overspinning thereof as plastic bags are serially separated therefrom.

Dispenser for plastic bags

There is provided an inflatable cushion inflated through a single inflation valve. A pair of inflated panels held in place by at least one tie strap connecting the panels rest beneath each end of the bottom of an article to be protected. The cushion has a pair of inflatable end chambers interconnected to the bottom panels and a pair of inflatable side chambers interconnected to the end chambers, which when inflated protect the ends and sides of the article. This is facilitated by internal openings which allow the inflated panels to easily bend underneath the ends of the article and around the corners. There are recesses at each corner which extend from each corner of one internal opening toward a peripheral edge of the cushion to provide a wedge-like portion of the side chambers. In one of the embodiments, an additional pair of internal openings facilitates a pair of top inflatable chambers interconnected to the end chambers to rest on the top of the article. In another embodiment of the present invention, the top chambers are interconnected by inserting an inflatable hook located a the periphery of one of the top chambers through a hook receiving member located on the other top chamber to interlock the chambers together. The receiving member may be an inflatable extension of one of the top chambers and the receiving member has an opening therein for retaining the hook.

Inflatable packaging cushion with interlocking elements

There is provided an inflatable cushion inflated through a single inflation valve. A pair of inflated panels held in place by at least one tie strap connecting the panels rest beneath each end of the bottom of an article to be protected. The cushion has a pair of inflatable end chambers interconnected to the bottom panels and a pair of inflatable side chambers interconnected to the end chambers, which when inflated protect the ends and sides of the article. This is facilitated by internal openings which allow the inflated panels to easily bend underneath the ends of the article and around the corners. There are recesses at each corner which extend from each corner of one internal opening toward a peripheral edge of the cushion to provide a wedge-like portion of the side chambers. In one of the embodiments, an additional pair of internal openings facilitates a pair of top inflatable chambers interconnected to the end chambers to rest on the top of the article. In another embodiment of the present invention, the chamber protecting the upper portion of the article includes a single inflatable chamber which folds across the top of the article. The top chamber has an internal opening in the middle thereof formed by a weld. Extending inwardly from the weld are portions of each thermoplastic sheet which remain after the cushion has been cut and adapted to hold a thin article.

Inflatable packaging cushion

A roll support system for supporting a roll of web material is provided which includes a mechanism for retaining and easily releasing a roll of web material wound around a core and having a telescoping core plug adapted to snugly fit in each end of the core. A core plug is provided with a telescoping spindle biased toward its extended position to support a roll in the support mechanism.
