An operable single-use syringe includes a barrel having an inside surface defining a chamber for retaining fluid and an open proximal end. A plunger rod having an elongate body portion and a stopper at its distal end slidably positioned in fluid-tight engagement in the barrel. A locking element is positioned in the barrel between the plunger rod and the inside surface of the barrel. The locking element has a base and two leg members projecting therefrom that are positioned in longitudinal grooves in the plunger rod. The locking element only moves distally in the barrel and prevents re-use of the syringe after its contents have been discharged.

Single-use syringe

A non-volatile lubricious coating composition is provided for use with medical devices, such as hypodermic needles, catheters, and the like. The coating composition includes a first siloxane polymer having a very low viscosity less than about 50 centistokes, a second siloxane polymer having a high viscosity greater than about 1,000 centistokes, a reactive silicone polymer which is capable of crosslinking upon exposure to radiation, such as a UV curable silicone acrylate, and a photoinitiator to accelerate cross-linking of the reactive silicone polymer. The coating composition may further include an aminofunctional siloxane polymer to promote adhesion to metal surfaces when used with needles. The coating composition provides flowability without the need for any volatile organic solvent, and is capable of curing to provide adhesion and lubricity.

Non-volatile lubricant system for medical devices

A single use syringe assembly is provided as well as a locking element for such an assembly. The single use syringe assembly includes a barrel, a plunger rod assembly and a locking element positioned within the barrel. The locking element includes one or more barbs for engaging the inside surface of the barrel. The barbs prevent the locking element from moving proximally within the barrel, but allow its distal movement therein with the plunger rod assembly. A spring member may be provided for urging the barbs towards the inside surface of the barrel. Structure provided for holding the proximal end and the distal end of the plunger rod assembly together during normal use of the syringe is breakable upon application of an additional force applied to the proximal end of the plunger rod.

Single use syringe and plunger rod locking device therefor

A lubricated hypodermic needle of the invention includes an elongate tube with an outside surface, a proximal end, a distal end and an open bore therethrough. The needle has a hub attached to the proximal end of the needle that is used to attach the needle to a fluid handling device. The invention includes a lubricious coating applied to and adherent to the outside surface of the tube. The lubricious coating has a first layer formed from an at least partially cured organosiloxane copolymer and polydimethylsiloxane that has a viscosity greater than about 1000 centistokes. The lubricious coating has a second layer, applied as a secondary operation onto the first layer, that includes a polydimethylsiloxane having a viscosity between about 50 centistokes and about 350 centistokes.
