A torque wrench having a handle and an output shaft is disclosed. The output shaft may be constrained to turn only unidirectionally due to a ratchet. Rotation of the output shaft may be permanently disabled by an internal mechanism. Torque imposed on the output shaft may be limited by a torque responsive cam clutch. The handle forms or is part of an enclosure enclosing internal components such as the ratchet, the internal disablement mechanism, and the torque responsive cam clutch. A seal between the body and the output shaft prevents ingress and egress of lubricants and contamination between the inside of the body and the output shaft.

A torque applying tool suited for torquing small surgical fasteners. The tool includes a torque limiting clutch accessible when a housing of the tool is removed, so that torque limits can be sensed without subjecting the blade or working shaft to deforming forces. Torque can be adjusted by turning a nut threaded to the blade or working shaft. The torque limiting clutch is formed in interacting cam members bearing interacting ratchet surfaces, the cam members urged together by a spring located between the clutch and the housing, away from interference with torque sensing when first establishing a predetermined maximum torque of the tool. The tool is small and disposable, and includes a rubber grip coating.

A system, and a method of using a system, for controlled tool operation. The method includes providing a tool used in a force application such as a such torque application. The tool communicates with a controller which can communicate with the tool, and to a display in communication with the tool and the controller. The controller can be programmed with operational information about a tool operation. Information related to the operational information is displayed to a user during use. Service information including at least information about an amount of force applied during use is recorded and stored in the controller. Also disclosed is a computerized system for controlled tool operation which sends operational instructions to the tool before use and retrieves service information from the tool after use.

A torque-limiting driver includes a housing, a shaft carried by the housing for rotation relative thereto and having a workpiece-engaging tip projecting from the housing, a torque-limiting mechanism coupled between the housing and the shaft and responsive to rotation of the housing in a predetermined direction to rotate the shaft at torques below a predetermined torque and accommodating rotation of the housing relative to the shaft at said predetermined torque and above, a torque-determining structure disposed in the housing and movable relative to the torque-limiting mechanism for adjusting the predetermined torque, and the housing including a stop portion engageable with the torque-determining structure for preventing torque-adjusting movement thereof.

A cam assembly for a click-type torque wrench includes an elongated plunger body having opposed ends and having a deep cavity formed axially in one end and terminating at an end face disposed with intermediate the ends, the end face having a cam seat formed therein and extending laterally theracross and having opposed sloping side cam surfaces. A sleeve may be disposed about the cam plunger for sliding engagement within a tubular lever arm of the torque wrench. The cam seat cooperates with an end of the wrench pivot arm for trapping therebetween the wrench trip block.

Electronic torque wrench

An electronic torque wrench has a tubular core with elongated apertures therein which respectively removably receive user interface assembly and power assembly modules, the modules being exposed through openings in a surrounding grip sheath. A workpiece-engaging head is coupled to a beam member which may received in a tapered opening in a shim member received in an end of the tube. A sensor on the beam member is connected by wires extending to the user interface assembly, which in turn has a display device producing a bar graph display indicating the proximity of a measured torque value to a preset torque level.

An electronic torque wrench has inner and outer telescoping housing portions and a battery tray assembly telescopically receivable in the inner housing portion and a bezel assembly receivable in an aperture in the outer housing portion and interconnected with the housing portions and the battery support assembly by a single fastener. The bezel assembly carries torque measuring circuitry.

A manually operated torque wrench is capable of providing a finite plurality of selectable torque values. The torque wrench has a wrench head, a handle, and a torque-responsive mechanism for producing an indication when a torque value has been applied by the torque wrench. A selector in operable communication with the torque measuring mechanism and adapted to set the torque measuring mechanism to one of a finite plurality of predetermined selectable torque value is provided. A retaining mechanism positively retains the selector when one of the selectable torque values is selected.
