A rotor blade assembly includes a slot for mounting a rotor blade that extends partially through a rotor disk and a continuous uninterrupted hoop seal that extends about the circumference of the rotor disk. The rotor disk includes an integrally formed seal that includes at least one knife edge disposed concentrically about the rotor disk. The slot receives a root portion of a rotor blade but does not extend through the seal. As the seal remains an uninterrupted full hoop about the circumference of the rotor disk, additional rigidity and strength are realized. The increased rigidity and strength provided by the full hoop structure provides for the reduction in material and physical dimensions without compromising desired performance of the seal.

A tool for use in an abrasive machining process has a body extending along a central longitudinal axis from a first end to a tip end. An abrasive material is located on the tip end. The body has a tip end protuberance. An abrasive material is located on the protuberance. A body lateral surface has, over a radial span of at least 20% of a radius of the protuberance, a continuously concave longitudinal profile diverging tipward.

Machining methods using superabrasive tool

A coolant nozzle is used in a machine tool having a rotating bit. The nozzle includes a through-aperture for accommodating the bit. The nozzle has a coolant inlet and a number of coolant outlets at more than one angular position about the through-aperture. Internal surface portions define one or more passageways between the inlet and the outlets.

A process for point superabrasive machining of a nickel based material comprising the steps of providing a tool having a grinding surface coated with a superabrasive material, orienting the tool relative to a surface of the nickel based material to be machined so that there is point contact between the surface to be machined and the grinding surface, and forming a part by removing material at the point contract by rotating the tool. The tool comprises an enlarged portion, a tip portion, and a first shaft portion extending from the enlarged portion to the tip portion, the first shaft portion and the tip portion being coated with an abrasive material, and the first shaft portion having a constant diameter.

Point superabrasive machining of nickel alloys

The present invention relates to a quill to be used to superabrasively machine complex shapes, such as airfoil shapes, into a substrate. The quill has a shaft portion, an enlarged head portion adjacent the shaft portion, and a tapered grinding portion adjacent the enlarged head portion. The tapered grinding portion has a layer of grit material selected from the group consisting of diamonds and cubic boron nitride thereon. In a preferred embodiment, the quill is a vitrified or plated cubic boron nitride quill on the grinding portion. A method of using the tool is also disclosed.

Flank superabrasive machining

The present invention relates to a silver braze alloy having improved wetting properties. The silver braze alloy consists essentially of from about 52.25 wt % to about 57.0 wt % silver, from about 38.95 to about 43.0 wt % copper, from about 0.5 wt % to about 5.5 wt %, preferably from about 1.0 wt % to about 5.5 wt %, manganese, and up to about 2.5 wt %, preferably from about 1.5 wt % to about 2.5 wt %, nickel. The alloy further may contain 0.15 wt % total of other trace elements.

Silver braze alloy

According to the present invention, a method and apparatus for electrochemically machining a workpiece is provided. The method includes the steps of: (1) providing a machine head, having an electrically conductive face; (2) providing a sensor, for sensing a distance between a first surface and a second surface of the workpiece; (3) positioning the electrically conductive face in close proximity to the first surface, leaving a substantially constant space therebetween; (4) providing a pool of fluid in contact with the second surface of the workpiece; (5) placing the sensor in communication with the pool of fluid; (6) disposing an electrolytic fluid in the space between the electrically conductive face and the first surface; (7) establishing a potential difference between the workpiece and the electrically conductive face, thereby causing charged particles of the workpiece to migrate from the first surface into the electrolytic solution at a rate; and (8) sensing the distance between the first and second surfaces through the pool of fluid, the sensor providing a real-time signal representative of the distance.
