Systems and methods for backing up and restoring virtual machines in a cluster environment. An instrumentation interface enables configuration data to be stored with save sets during backup and enables the configuration of the destination to be adjusted based on the stored configuration during a restore.

A snapshot of a remote virtual machine within a cluster of nodes is taken by using an image writer with a snapshot provider. A set of backup components is recorded by using a cluster interface. The remote virtual machine is reconstructed by using the snapshot and a framework with the set of backup components.

A set of objects associated with an incremental backup is determined where the set of objects includes one or more full backup objects associated with a full backup from which the incremental backup depends. A backup is performed using the set of objects, including by setting one or more timestamps associated with the one or more full backup objects to a time later than the full backup.
