A telecommunication network cross-connect panel 10 is described having a chassis 14 for receiving insertable modules 12, 212. The chassis 14 has a back wall 24 with a backplane printed circuit board 34. An array of rear coaxial connectors are mounted to the backplane printed circuit board 34 in columns of four connectors 36, 38, 40 and 42 for terminating and cross-connecting two pieces of telecommunication equipment per column. Female DIN connector receptacles 44 are mounted on the front side of the board 34 at spaced slot locations with each receptacle 44 electrically connected to a corresponding four backplane connectors of a corresponding column. A plurality of modules 12 are insertable into the slots for interconnecting male DIN connector plugs 58 into corresponding aligned DIN connector receptacles 44. A plug 58 is mounted on a rear end of a module printed circuit board 50. A plurality of coaxial mini-WECO jacks are mounted to a front end of the printed circuit board 50 and electrically connected through the board 50 to the plugs 58. A panel face plate 52 is mounted on the front end of the board 50 with apertures for receiving forward ends of the jacks 60, 62, 64 and 65. The backplane is capable of being pre-wired to terminate various telecommunications apparatuses, prior to the insertion the modules 12 or 212.

A digital communication network having a digital cross-connect system is described for facilitating the insulation, testing, monitoring, restoration and repair of digital telecommunication apparatus. The system includes a plurality of digital cross-connect modules 10. Each module 10 has an input jack 32, and output jack 34, cross-connect input jack 36 and cross-connect output jack 38 mounted on the front panel for providing front panel access. Each of the jacks is mounted to a printed circuit board having printed circuit board terminals. BNC or TNC coaxial connectors are mounted on the rear panel. The jacks and the connectors are interconnected via printed circuit board traces. Each of the modules has a switch structure for interconnecting jacks and for providing termination before break capability. Each of the jacks automatically interrupts the circuit when a coaxial plug is inserted into a respective jack to isolate the conductor.

A unique telecommunication coaxial front access jack and plug assembly 50 is illustrated in FIGS. 3 and 4 for mounting on a front panel 52 of telecommunication terminal equipment in which the front panel has a plurality of front panel apertures 94 to receive jacks 56. Each jack 56 has a barrel housing 80 with a front section 82 projecting into an aperture 54. The front section 82 has a locking groove 104 formed therein for receiving bayonet prongs 142 of a plug sleeve 128. The prongs 142 are positioned at a rear section 136 of the sleeve adjacent a resilient 'O'-ring 147 that provides locking compression of the bayonet prongs in the locking groove 104 to prevent inadvertent removal of the plug 124 from the jack 56.
