A system for performing vascular hemostasis comprises a balloon insertable into a tissue track so as to be disposed outside a vessel above an opening formed in the vessel. A hemostasis layer is removably disposed on at least a portion of an outer surface of the balloon. A balloon tube is fluidly coupled to the balloon and configured to selectively inflate or deflate the balloon. The balloon is inflatable above the opening such that the hemostasis layer is disposed on the outer surface of the vessel and closes the opening. The hemostasis layer is separable from the balloon so as to remain disposed on the outer surface of the vessel when the balloon is removed from the tissue track, and continues to close the opening after removal of the balloon.

A system and method are disclosed for automatically limiting the drainage of a bodily fluid such as cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from a patient into a collection chamber. The collection chamber includes a vent having an hydrophobic filter for the passage of air to facilitate the movement of CSF yet to maintain a closed system. The system includes a buoyant float hingedly connected with the top of the collection chamber in one embodiment. When fluid rises in the collection chamber to a predetermined volume, buoyant force raises the float and causes a seal plug mounted on top of the float to seal one of an inflow port or a vent port. The float is limited to pivoting movement in one plane and to a certain angle within that plane. The system and method avoid overdrainage of CSF from the patient and overfilling of the collection chamber.

A programmable apparatus for laser beam shaping including a preprogrammable mircomirror array produces a spatial energy distribution suitable for accurately and rapidly marking, machining and processing materials. The preprogrammed micromirror array redistributes the laser output beam energy to produce a desired two-dimensional machining pattern on a work piece. The energy pattern created by the preprogrammed micromirror array is changeable between successive pulses of the laser to create accurate, complex three-dimensional machined shapes in a work piece not easily achieved by conventional machining systems. A special application of this invention is laser beam shaping to produce a uniform spatial energy distribution, i.e. homogenizing the beam from a laser with non-uniform energy distribution. Continuous adjustment of beam shaping is provided to maintain beam homogenization in accordance with changes in laser beam output energy profile.

An electronic correction contour is generated from a measured refractive correction for a patient, and transferred to the surface of the lens by ablation etching with one or more laser pulses. After each of the laser pulses, the refractive properties of the lens are measured and compared to the electronic contour correction derived from a patient's refractive correction. The ablation etching is terminated in localized areas where the refractive properties match the electronic correction contour. End point detection includes monitoring refractive qualities of the lens during the recontouring process, modifying the pattern through changes in the laser pulses.
