An apparatus and a method for an automotive lamp are provided. The apparatus includes a housing made of plastic having an impact groove formed on a surface of the housing, wherein the impact groove is designed as a function of a depth, a width, a desired force, a cross section, and a profile to cause a designed rupture upon application of an applied force.

Tunable impact feature in automotive lamps

A lighting assembly having a mounting structure, an LED mounted on the mounting structure, an optical device optically coupled to the LED, and a support structure for connecting the optical device to the mounting structure. The LED is enclosed within a space formed by the mounting structure, the support structure, and the optical device. The support structure absorbs thermal energy to reduce an operating temperature of the optical device. The optical device may be formed from a first material and the support structure may be formed from a different, second material.

Bi-material transmitting optical element

The interlocking joint includes a first part made of a first material including a plurality of grooves, and a second part molded over the plurality of the grooves of the first part creating a mechanical bond and a chemical bond between the first part and the second part.

According to aspects of the disclosed subject matter, a method of placing a solid state light source on a heat sink can include coating a surface of the heat sink with an anodized coating or an e-coating, for example. A portion of the coated surface can be treated via laser ablation for placing the solid state light source. Additionally, the laser ablation parameters can be adjusted to provide a predetermined roughness to the treated portion of the coated surface.
