Different segments of a web page may display multiple values from different fields from a managed component. In dynamic web pages, processing is done in top down order. A web page may have multiple segments. The method uses hidden fields in the web page and a new manager superclass. The manager superclass is extended by a managed component. The managed component is displayed in multiple segments of a web page. The manager superclass provides a segment entry method, a segment exit method, and a component entry method to the managed component. The manger superclass provides getter and setter methods for properties of the visual component. An index is assigned to each segment in the web page. The manager superclass defines a segment index method that allows the managed component to query which of the segments in the web page is active when a getter or setter method is invoked.

The present invention provides a method, system, and computer program product for extending Java Server Faces Web pages to support multiple devices. The method includes: providing a device and modeling language independent Java Server Faces (JSF) web page, wherein the JSF web page does not contain any modeling language specific elements.

Elements are used to define a user interface. Each element can include a corresponding user interface widget and/or arrangement information for the user interface. The elements and/or corresponding widgets are hierarchically related. Each element implements a set of application programming interfaces that enable the rendering of both design-time views (e.g., design view and preview view) of the user interface as well as a runtime view of the user interface. As a result, a designer is able to view exactly what will be generated during runtime, and a widget developer will not need to develop additional software to support the design environment.

Run-time data and visual layout definition data can be stored in a storage medium. The run-time data and the visual layout definition data can be associated with a terminal application, which is configured to communicate with a host server in blocks of data in accordance with a standardized synchronous terminal protocol. A visual screen for the terminal application can be generated by combining the layout data and the run-time data. The generating can occur when the terminal application is disconnected from the host server or host server emulator. The generated visual screen, which is a screen of a front-end of a terminal application interface, can be presented.

A computer system and object-oriented method and class for use with the computer system to convert data in Unicode format back and forth to data having a fixed-length format, such as EBCDIC, and to allow editing of the data and return the edited data back to its original format without loss of bytes. Conversely, the method, class, and computer system also allow the downloading of data in a fixed-length format into a Unicode environment, the fixed-length format is converted into an editable form and then reconverted back into the fixed-length format without loss of bytes. The method accommodates UTF-UTF-and UTF-Once the fixed-length of the data has been determined, a byte array is created and an attribute indicating whether a character is a single byte character or a double-byte character is assigned to each byte in the array. The array and subset arrays representative of fixed-length fields within the fixed-length statements may then be truncated, and/or repaired at either or both the beginning and the end, and/or right- or left-aligned to realize a version of the data that can be displayed and edited without loss of bytes. Once edited, using the assigned attributes, the byte array can be converted to code having the fixed-length format or can be translated back to Unicode.
