Development tools are disclosed that connect various artifacts in a database aware fashion. For example, the development environment may integrate SQL query builders across multiple application development interfaces (e.g., a source code editor, XML editor, database scripting tools, etc.), significantly improving developer productivity, reducing development cost and time. Thus, the process of consuming heterogeneous artifacts in an application (or creating them for consumption) becomes a very productive experience, eliminating the need to manually cut/paste information in multiple project files in many cases.

A user-friendly query modeling tool and method, for representing, creating, modifying and modeling a query language statement for use in retrieving data from a database. In accordance with the present invention, the tool includes a user interface for receiving or building and manipulating a query, a query model definition for use in populating instances of one or more query models, and a model content provider for receiving query elements from the user interface and providing them to the query model, and conversely, for retrieving query elements from the query model and providing them to the user interface. The user interface enables the user to easily group and ungroup query elements by providing a visual tool for selecting query elements to be grouped and ungrouped.

The method accepts the user's selection of a join grid row from the join grid, and, in response, places a join indicator in the join overview diagram between icons representing the pair of user-selected database tables from the user-selected join grid row. In a computerized database system, a query is formulated to retrieve data from the database by interactively identifying at least one table containing query data, and at least one column and at least one row in the identified table containing the query data. The rows are interactively identified using a condition statement. The condition statement is interactively formulated using at least one displayed flowline. Input is received from the user specifying a position on the flowline for insertion of a predicate and the predicate. The flowline is displayed with the predicate inserted in the specified location. The predicates are displayed on the flowline in between nodes. Predicates on the same flowline are combined through a logical AND operation. Predicates on different flowlines between the same nodes are combined through a logical OR operation. The flowline is converted to a corresponding Boolean algebra statement and displayed. Input from the user adding a predicate is received in the Boolean statement and is converted to a corresponding updated graphical flow representation.
