Rail-fastening assembly

A railway rail anchoring device, for use with a railway rail-fastening clip which is approximately M-shaped in plan and has first and second leg portions and a rail-bearing portion, comprises a base member and first and second clip-retaining members connected together by the base member such that the first clip-retaining member is spaced apart from the second clip-retaining member so as to define between the first and second clip-retaining members an opening for receiving the rail-bearing portion of such a clip. Each of the first and second clip-retaining members defines a passageway for receiving one of the leg portions of such a clip, and a boundary surface of at least one of the passageways includes, at a location intermediate respective ends of the passageway, first locating part for engagement, when the device is in use with such a clip, with a first region of the leg portion of the clip located in the passageway such that the clip can be held in a pre-assembly position in which the is retained by the device but the rail-bearing portion of the clip does not bear on a rail. Second locating part is also provided on a boundary surface of at least one of the passageways for engagement with a second region of the leg portion of the clip located in the passageway such that the clip can be held in a working position in which the rail-bearing portion of the clip bears on the rail. The first and second locating parts are such that the clip cannot move out of the pre-assembly position towards a rail unless driven in a first direction and the clip cannot move out of the working position away from the rail unless driven in a second direction, opposite to the first direction.

Railway rail-fastening clip and assembly

In an assembly for use in fastening a railway rail to an underlying rail foundation, a resilient railway rail fastening clip (1, 2,3) has at least one portion (1a) which when in use bears on, and extends substantially parallel to, a flange (301) of an adjacent railway rail (300), and retains an insulator (13, 13') for electrically insulating the clip (1, 2, 3) from the rail (300) when in use. The insulator (13) is held in engagement with the clip (1, 2, 3), which has a rail bearing portion of substantially circular cross-section, such that it can rotate about the longitudinal axis of the said rail bearing portion (1a). Unlike the prior art the insulator is self-aligning on the rail flange (301) when the rail (300) moves. One insulator (13, 13') disclosed has at least two load bearing surfaces (13a), such that it may be rotated so as to present an unworn load bearing surface (13a) to the rail flange (301). The thickness of material between the load bearing surfaces (13a) of the insulator (13, 13') and the rail bearing portion (1a) of the clip (1, 2, 3) may be made to vary between adjacent load bearing surfaces (13a), such that the insulator (13) can be rotated so as to adjust the height of the rail bearing portion (1a) above the rail flange (301).

A railway rail fastening clip (1) suitable for holding down a railway rail (2) is formed from a rod of resilient material bent so as to be approximately M-shaped in plan, the clip (1) being such that, when it is bearing on the flange of a rail (2), the longitudinal axis of a part (14) thereof, which interconnects inner legs (13, 15) of the M, lies in a reference plane which is substantially parallel, but not identical, to a plane containing the longitudinal axes of outer legs (11, 17) of the M. Such clips (1) are used with an anchoring device (5), which, as the clip (1) is installed therein, deflects the outer legs (11, 17) downwardly with respect to the inner legs (13, 15), so as to place the clip under stress.

There is disclosed a trolley which runs along unfastened rails of a track, in which each rail is positioned between a respective one of two pairs of housings on each sleeper, the trolley moving from sleeper to sleeper in order to complete permanent fastening of the rails to the sleepers. The trolley has a pair of rail-clip driving apparatus on each side, one associated with each rail, of which each comprise a pair of magazines for storing e-shaped clips, and a clip driver for each magazine which drives a lowermost clip in a stack of clips in the magazine into a sleeper housing. Each apparatus includes a longitudinally displaceable support tube on which the magazines are mounted, the tube moving one way or the other depending upon which magazine first comes into cooperation with its respective housing in order to bring the other magazine into cooperation with its housing. The apparatus may move laterally relative to the trolley via a pair of parallelogram linkages provided one at each end of the support tube in order to adjust the apparatus to a changing path of the rails. A sleeper lifter may be provided to raise sleepers which are too low, and a sleeper sensor responds to the presence of a metallic housing on a sleeper in order to stop the trolley as it advances from sleeper to sleeper.
