Impeller bearings for pumps are disclosed. An example fluid pump includes a motor, a shaft coupled to a rotor of the motor, an impeller coupled to the shaft forward of the motor, the impeller including blades to pump a fluid, a first radial bearing positioned around the shaft aft of the motor, a second radial bearing positioned around the impeller, and guide vanes extending radially from the second radial bearing upstream of the blades of the impeller.

Example pump systems having dual-function annular heat exchangers are disclosed. An example pump system to pressurize a fluid within a closed loop transport bus includes a pump to move the fluid, a conduit in fluid connection with the pump, a heat exchanger positioned around at least a portion of the conduit, the heat exchanger to receive a first electrical signal transmitted in a first direction at a first time and a second electrical signal transmitted in a second direction at a second time different from the first time, the second direction opposite the first direction.

Pump systems having dual-function heat exchangers and related methods

Impeller bearings for pumps are disclosed. An example fluid pump includes a motor, a shaft coupled to a rotor of the motor, an impeller coupled to the shaft, a first radial bearing positioned around the shaft of the motor aft of the motor, and a second radial bearing positioned around the impeller.

A thermal management system of a gas turbine engine, the thermal management system including: a thermal transport bus configured to have a heat exchange fluid flowing therethrough and including a pump including a plurality of bearings; an auxiliary thermal bus in thermal communication with the plurality of bearings; and an auxiliary heat exchanger in thermal communication with the auxiliary thermal bus.

Thermal management system

A method is provided for operating a thermal management system of a gas turbine engine. The method includes: operating the gas turbine engine to start-up the gas turbine engine; receiving data indicative of a state of a thermal transport bus of the thermal management system using a sensor, the state of the thermal transport bus including a phase of a thermal fluid within the thermal transport bus; and starting a pump of a pump assembly in response to receiving data indicative of the state of the thermal transport bus of the thermal management system, the pump in fluid communication with the thermal transport bus.

A cooling assembly includes a coolant chamber disposed inside an airfoil of a turbine assembly that directs coolant inside the airfoil. The airfoil extends between a leading edge and a trailing edge along an axial length of the airfoil. Inlet cooling channels are fluidly coupled with the coolant chamber and direct the coolant in a direction toward a trailing edge chamber of the airfoil. The trailing edge chamber is fluidly coupled with at least one inlet cooling channel. The trailing edge chamber is disposed at the trailing edge of the airfoil and includes an inner surface. The inlet cooling channels direct at least a portion of the coolant in a direction toward the inner surface of the trailing edge chamber. One or more outlet cooling channels direct at least a portion of the coolant in one or more directions away from the trailing edge chamber.

Cooling assembly for a turbine assembly

A thermal management system is provided for incorporation into a gas turbine engine, wherein the gas turbine engine, the aircraft, or both define a vertical direction. The thermal management system including: a thermal transport bus having a thermal fluid flowing therethrough; a plurality of heat source exchangers in thermal communication with the thermal fluid in the thermal transport bus; and a pump assembly in flow communication with the thermal transport bus, the pump assembly including: a pump; and a pump protection device positioned below the pump along the vertical direction.

A thermal management system for transferring heat between fluids includes a thermal transport bus through which a heat exchange fluid flows. Additionally, the system includes a heat source heat exchanger arranged along the bus such that heat is added to the fluid flowing through the heat source heat exchanger. Moreover, the system includes a plurality of heat sink heat exchangers arranged along the bus such that heat is removed from the fluid flowing through the plurality of heat sink heat exchangers. Furthermore, the system includes a bypass conduit fluidly coupled to the bus such that the bypass conduit allows the fluid to bypass one of the heat source heat exchanger or one of the heat sink heat exchangers. In addition, the system includes a valve configured to control a flow of the fluid through the bypass conduit based on a pressure of the fluid within the bus.

Thermal management system for transferring heat between fluids

In one embodiment, an airfoil includes an airfoil body portion, an airfoil tip portion disposed radially outward of the airfoil body portion, an airfoil root portion, and a plurality of radial cooling passages extending through the airfoil body portion from the root portion to the tip airfoil portion. The airfoil body portion and the airfoil tip portion are joined at a braze interface or a weld interface. The airfoil tip portion includes at least one manifold fluidly connecting at least one radial cooling passage to at least one other radial cooling passage.

Cooled airfoil and method of making

A hypersonic aircraft includes one or more leading edge assemblies that are designed to cool the leading edge of certain portions of the hypersonic aircraft that are exposed to high thermal loads, such as extremely high temperatures and/or thermal gradients. Specifically, the leading edge assemblies may include an outer wall tapered to a leading edge or stagnation point. A coolant supply provides a flow of cooling fluid to a porous tip that is joined to the forward end of the outer wall and defines variable porosity and/or internal barriers to direct a flow of cooling fluid to the regions of the leading edge experiencing the highest thermal loading.

System and method for cooling a leading edge of a high speed vehicle

A turbine airfoil includes a leading edge, a trailing edge, a pressure side wall extending between the leading edge and the trailing edge, a suction side wall extending between the leading edge and the trailing edge, a cooling air supply cavity disposed within the turbine airfoil, and a near wall cooling cavity disposed within the turbine airfoil and fluidly coupled to the cooling air supply cavity to receive cooling air. In addition, the near wall cooling cavity partially extends along the suction side wall from adjacent the leading edge to a location more proximal the trailing edge. Moreover, the near wall cooling cavity provides near wall cooling to a high heat load region along the suction side wall.

System and method for near wall cooling for turbine component

A turbomachinery component for a turbomachine includes feed manifold, a return manifold and a sidewall. The feed manifold is configured to receive a coolant stream therein and includes a plurality of feed plenums. The return manifold includes a plurality of return plenums. The sidewall defines a plurality of feed channels and a plurality of return channels therein. The sidewall further includes an inner surface and an outer surface opposite the inner surface. Each feed channel is in fluid communication with at least one of the feed plenums. Each return channel is in fluid communication with at least one of the return plenums. The sidewall further at least partially defines a plurality of microchannels. Each microchannel is in fluid communication with one of the feed channels and one of the return channels.

System for removing heat from turbomachinery components

A turbine airfoil includes a body having an airfoil wall, and a coolant chamber within the body. A plurality of cooling passages are within the airfoil wall, each cooling passage includes: a first portion extending from a first point on an exterior surface of the airfoil wall to the coolant chamber, and a second portion extending from a second point on the exterior surface of the airfoil wall distal from the first point to intersect a mid-portion of the first portion. A cap element closes the first portion at the first point but leaving the second portion open. Each cooling passage has a single inlet in fluid communication with the coolant chamber and a single outlet at the second point of the second portion.

An apparatus and method for cooling an engine component, such as an airfoil, for a turbine engine including an outer wall separating a cooling fluid flow from a hot fluid flow. A cooling circuit including a cooling passage having opposing sidewalls can be provided in the engine component. At least one turbulator can be provided between the opposing sidewalls, and can include a conduit having an inlet and an outlet passing through the at least one turbulator.

A cooled article and a method of forming a cooled article are disclosed. The cooled article includes a component, a porous material incorporated into the component, and a cooling medium within the porous material. Another cooled article is formed by a process includes the steps of forming a porous material from a pre-sintered preform, providing a component, and incorporating the porous material into the component. The porous material is in fluid communication with a cooling medium. The method of forming a cooled article includes providing a metal felt material infused with braze filler material, pre-sintering the metal felt material to form a porous material, providing a component, and incorporating the porous material into the component.
