Devices and methods for treating one or more damaged, diseased, or traumatized portions of the spine, including intervertebral discs, to reduce or eliminate associated back pain. In one or more embodiments, the present invention relates to an expandable interbody spacer. The expandable interbody spacer may comprise a first jointed arm comprising a plurality of links pivotally coupled end to end. The expandable interbody spacer further may comprise a second jointed arm comprising a plurality of links pivotally coupled end to end. The first jointed arm and the second jointed arm may be interconnected at a proximal end of the expandable interbody spacer. The first jointed arm and the second jointed arm may be interconnected at a distal end of the expandable interbody spacer.

Expandable interbody spacer

Interbody fusion devices including deployable fixation members. The implant may include a spacer, optionally, an end member coupled to the spacer, and one or more fixation members configured to extend into adjacent vertebrae. The fixation members may include screws, nails, shims, tangs, spikes, staples, pins, blades, fins, or the like, and combinations thereof.

Interbody fusion devices with self-affixing mechanisms

A bone stabilizing plate includes two plate portions, each affixable to bones of a patient, the plate portions telescoping together with mating rails and grooves. A limiter associated with one of the plate portions sliding engages one a catch associated with the other of the plate portions, when the plate portions are telescoped together, and resists stops telescoping when the plate portions are telescoped a predetermined distance apart. Once the limiter and catch are engaged, the plate portions enable imposition of a minimum compressive force between bones connected to the plates. The limiter is resiliently positioned to deflect into a relief formed in its respective plate portion. A groove positioned proximate the catch enables free telescoping motion limited by the engagement of the catch and limiter, whereby the minimum compressive force between bones is maintained, and Wolfe's Law may apply.

The present invention relates to a multi-tool or multi-purpose device comprising a counter sink and a depth gauge. In one aspect, the invention provides a method of determining the necessary length of a screw to be implanted into bone. Also provided herein are sterile kits comprising single-use instrumentation for use in orthopedic procedures.

A surgical device includes a cannula for use in combination with one or more surgical implements. The cannula includes a base member at a proximal end, a sidewall connected to the base member; and a bore defined by the base member and the sidewall. The sidewall further has an opening into the bore between axially-extending edges of the sidewall. The base member includes a combination track including a first section and a second section. The first section is an opening through the base member into the bore and the second section is an opening into an action area outside of the bore and radially between the edges of the sidewall. The combination track is configured to slidably receive a first surgical implement through the first section and into the bore and slidable receive a second surgical implement through the second section and into the action area.

The present invention provides systems and devices for fixing the angle of instruments passing through a bone plate, as well as methods for using the same. The devices include bone plates and complementary guide blocks having features for secure attachment, as well as features for simple detachment.

Drill and/or guide wire guides and methods are usable with at least one orthopedic surgical implant screw, wherein the guides have a length defined between a first end and a second end located opposite to the first end and a thickness defined between a front side and a back side located opposite to the front side of the guide. The guides have a guide hole formed adjacent to the first end of the guide, wherein the guide hole extends through the thickness of the guide from the front side to the back side of the guide, wherein the guide hole has a diameter sized to receive a diameter of a drill bit or a guide wire. The guides have a slot formed on the front side of the guide and located adjacent to the front side of the guide, wherein the slot extends along at least a portion of the length of the guide, wherein the slot has a diameter sized to receive a diameter of a drill bit or a guide wire. The longitudinal axis of the guide hole is angled from a longitudinal axis of the guide or the slot by an angle a, wherein the angle a is greater than about 1&#xb0; and less than about 90&#xb0;.

An anchor for a pedicle screw having an anchor body comprising a proximal end, a proximal portion, a distal portion, and a distal end, and a through-hole through the anchor body from the proximal end to the distal end. The through-hole defines a long axis of the anchor, and is provided with undersized female threads in the proximal portion and a reduced inner diameter in the distal portion. The reduced inner diameter causes expansion of at least the distal portion of the anchor body when a screw is inserted into the through-hole. The anchor is further provided with a plurality of ridges on an exterior surface of the anchor body, the ridges configured to reduce the likelihood of pullout when the anchor is inserted into a vertebra and a screw is inserted into the through-hole.
