Systems and methods in provide approaches for channel fitting to determine a particular number of resources, such as cores, that may be used for one or more processing jobs for a particular input channel. A given channel may be evaluated to determine performance affecting parameters and those parameters may be evaluated against previously known hardware configurations or against a historical heuristic dataset. A configuration for the channel may be selected where particular cores of a set of resources are assigned to the channel to perform one or more operations, such as transcoding operations. As a result, empirically determined or historical data may be used to efficiently allocate resources for different transcoding operations to provide both predictable performance and high utilization.

Channel fitting for media processing

Various embodiments of methods, apparatus, systems, and non-transitory computer-readable storage media for buffer recovery in segmented media delivery applications are described. Segments of a live media presentation are stored in a buffer. A number of segments in the buffer is determined to have fallen below a threshold. Based on that determination, various buffer recovery techniques may be performed. In one such technique, a buffered segment is decoded into a first set of video frames, the first set of video frames having a first playback duration. The first set of video frames is encoded into a second set of video frames having a second playback duration that is longer than the first playback duration.

Buffer recovery in segmented media delivery applications

Timecode is encoded in video using colored regions of pixels. Pixels in adjacent regions in frames of a video are color-coded to encode timecode. For example, two adjacent regions might both be colored red to encode the numeral '0.' As another example, two adjacent regions might be colored red and purple, respectively, to encode the numeral '1.' The regions can be the same size as a macroblock (e.g. 16&#xd7;16 pixels) used by a video encoder and aligned to macroblock boundaries for efficient encoding. The colors of the adjacent regions can be decoded to obtain the timecode. The timecode might then be burned into frames of the video, displayed non-destructively over the video, or used in another manner.

An encoder and a re-packager circuit. The encoder may be configured to generate one or more bitstreams each having (i) a video portion, (ii) a subtitle placeholder channel, and (iii) a plurality of caption channels. The re-packager circuit may be configured to generate one or more re-packaged bitstreams in response to (i) one of the bitstreams and (ii) a selected one of the plurality of caption channels. The re-packaged bitstream moves the selected caption channel into the subtitle placeholder channel.

Adaptable captioning in a video broadcast

The playback of a media file can be adjusted for portions where the content may be of less interest to a viewer. The audio content can be analyzed to locate portions of the media file that might be appropriate for compression, such as during periods of relative silence. Information for the beginning or end of such a period can be stored as compression cues associated with the media file. During an encoding of the file, the compression cues and associated time code data can be used to incorporate playback adjustment information in the media file. A player playing the media file can determine whether to adjust the playback based on this information, such as to increase a frame rate of the playback during periods of silence and return the frame rate to a standard rate for the media file at the end of those periods.
