A method for fabricating a cellular tritium breeder component includes obtaining a reticulated carbon foam skeleton comprising a network of interconnected ligaments. The foam skeleton is then melt-infiltrated with a tritium breeder material, for example, lithium zirconate or lithium titanate. The foam skeleton is then removed to define a cellular breeder component having a network of interconnected tritium purge channels. In an embodiment the ligaments of the foam skeleton are enlarged by adding carbon using chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) prior to melt-infiltration. In an embodiment the foam skeleton is coated with a refractory material, for example, tungsten, prior to melt infiltration.

Chair base

A connectable chair has a frame for supporting a seat and a back support. The frame including a pair of spaced apart leg members. A female ganging device and a corresponding male ganging device both have a mounting portion and an engagement portion. The engagement portion interconnects like chairs in a side-by-side relationship. The mounting portion secures the female and male ganging device to opposite sides of the frame. The female ganging further includes a receiving slot extending across the engagement portion. The male ganging device further includes an elongated flange extending across the engagement portion. The flange of the male ganging device may be received by the receiving slot of the female ganging device of a like chair thereby providing for the interconnection of a plurality of connectable chairs in a side-by-side relationship.

A seat including a hand grip and a seat back assembly. The seat back assembly has a rigid frame and a trim cover for covering at least a portion of the frame. The hand grip includes an outer surface, an inner surface, a grip area, a flange and a tab. The inner surface is opposite the outer surface. The grip area is defined in the outer surface and is adapted to accommodate a hand of a person. The flange bounds the grip area for concealing a portion or the trim cover during assembly of the hand grip to the seat. The tab extends outwardly from the inner surface of the grip. A distal end of the tab is generally parallel and spaced apart with the inner surface of the hand grip for receiving the frame therebetween.

A method of making a carbon fiber-carbon matrix reinforced ceramic composite wherein the result is a carbon fiber-carbon matrix reinforcement is embedded within a ceramic matrix. The ceramic matrix does not penetrate into the carbon fiber-carbon matrix reinforcement to any significant degree. The carbide matrix is a formed in situ solid carbide of at least one metal having a melting point above about 1850 degrees centigrade. At least when the composite is intended to operate between approximately 1500 and 2000 degrees centigrade for extended periods of time the solid carbide with the embedded reinforcement is formed first by reaction infiltration. Molten silicon is then diffused into the carbide. The molten silicon diffuses preferentially into the carbide matrix but not to any significant degree into the carbon-carbon reinforcement. Where the composite is intended to operate between approximately 2000 and 2700 degrees centigrade for extended periods of time such diffusion of molten silicon into the carbide is optional and generally preferred, but not essential.

A composite rigid foam structure that has a skin or coating on at least one of its surfaces. The skin is formed in situ by thermal spray techniques. The skin is bonded substantially throughout the surface of the porous substrate to the peripheries of the pores. The skin on the average does not penetrate the surface of the substrate by more than the depth of about 2 to 5 pores. Thus, thermal spraying the skin onto the rigid foam produces a composite that is tightly and uniformly bonded together without unduly increasing the weight of the composite structure. Both thermal conductivity and bonding are excellent.

Composite foam structures

A high precision composite optical mirror substrate comprising a lightweight reticulated foam core which is less than about 25 percent dense, an initially separate dense or small pore size faceplate mounted to the core, and a continuous formed in situ encapsulating coating. The coating fully encapsulates the ligaments throughout the reticulated foam core, the juncture between the core and the faceplate, and the faceplate, including the exposed face of the faceplate (the mirror surface). The exposed face of the dense faceplate is shaped to about the desired mirror surface shape. The deposit of coating material on the exposed face of the faceplate is near net shape to the desired mirror surface. The physical characteristics of the composite substrate are dominated by the properties of the coating material. When the coating material is a chemical vapor deposit of silicon carbide, the interlayer is preferably graphite with a thermal expansion coefficient that closely matches that of the silicon carbide. The silicon carbide encapsulated substrate is very strong, rigid, and thermally and structurally stable.

Lightweight precision optical mirror substrate and method of making

A refractory composite structure is formed which comprises a ductile refractory metallic layer with a roughened surface which is tightly bonded to a refractory composite structural shell. The roughened surface is preferably dendritic in form and produced by chemical vapor deposition techniques. The refractory composite structural shell is preferably a carbon-carbon composite formed by applying a carbon filament preform to the roughened surface, infiltrating the preform with a carbon matrix precursor, and carbonizing the precursor.

Method of forming a composite structure such as a rocket combustion

A mobile automotive servicing facility (100) expands from a closed configuration for transport on highways and roads into a multibay service facility including multiple lifts (142) for servicing automobiles, a restroom (222), a customer waiting room/office area (144) and other amenities. In the closed configuration, the mobile automotive servicing facility resembles a double drop trailer. When deployed for maintenance on automobiles, outer side walls (120) of the facility are pivoted to extend the roof of the facility on both sides. Then inner side walls (122) are pivoted to extend the floor of the facility in an area under the extended roof. The extended floor (122) provides a ramp for ingress and egress of automobiles into the interior (128) of the facility. Contained within the interior of the facility are automobile lifts (142) and equipment for servicing the automobile, including oil change and chassis lubrication, filter replacement, wiper blade replacement, belt replacement and additional services.

A refractory composite structure comprising a ductile refractory metallic layer with a roughened surface which is tightly bonded to a refractory composite structural shell. The roughened surface is dendritic in form and is produced by chemical vapor deposition techniques.

Composite structure

An airbag assembly including an inflatable airbag, an ignitable propellant charge for generating inflating gas and a filter between the interior of the airbag and the propellant charge. The filter comprising a porous carbon foam substrate coated substantially throughout with a thermally and structurally stable material which has been formed in situ by chemical vapor deposition techniques.

Filter and method of forming

A high temperature resistant structure which is capable of withstanding temperatures well in excess of 2500 degrees Fahrenheit in oxidizing environments for periods of at least several hours. A high temperature resistant substrate such as carbon carbon composite is coated in situ with very thin alternate layers of silicon carbide and a carbide formed from hafnium or zirconium. The coating is preferably formed using chemical vapor deposition procedures.
