An angle-transforming optical assembly () anamorphically conditions the modulated beam. A scanning element () scans the modulated beam toward a display surface () for forming a two-dimensional image thereon.

Electro-mechanical grating device having a continuously controllable diffraction efficiency

A light integrator produces diffuse illumination from a beam of light wherein image artifacts due to debris within the integrator are suppressed. The light integrator includes an integrator block having an elongated cylindrical light integrating cavity enclosed by end walls and a longitudinal cylindrical chamber wall having a diffusely reflecting interior surface The chamber wall includes a longitudinally extending output slit for emitting light from the cavity. A dust-free zone exists within the cavity in the shape of a sector of a circle within which contaminants cannot come to rest without producing visible artifacts, wherein the origin of the sector is located at or nearby a plane of the original. An elongated light pipe extends into the cavity through one of the end walls, where the light pipe has an input port at one end thereof for introducing the beam of light and a treatment along its length for emitting light entering its port into the cavity. At least one of the end walls forms a support for the elongated light pipe so that the light pipe extends along a length of the integrating cavity outside of the dust-free zone and in relation to the chamber wall thereof to direct light emitted therefrom toward the diffusely reflecting interior surface.

A mechanical grating device for improving the diffraction efficiency. The mechanical grating device is built on a base having a surface. Above the base a spacer layer, having an upper surface, is provided, and a longitudinal channel is formed in said spacer layer, said channel having a first and second opposing side wall and a bottom. A plurality of spaced apart deformable ribbon elements are disposed parallel to each other. The deformable elements are organized in groups of N elements wherein N is greater than 2. When the device is actuated each of said groups forms a pattern of discrete levels wherein the pattern has n levels wherein n is greater than 2.

Multilevel mechanical grating device

A mechanical grating device for diffracting an incident light beam has a base which defines a surface. A spacer layer is provided above the base, said spacer layer defining an upper surface of said spacer layer. A longitudinal channel is formed in said spacer layer, said channel having a first and second opposing side walls and a bottom. The side walls are substantially vertically disposed with respect to the bottom, and said channel having a constant cross section along the entire length of the mechanical grating device. A plurality of spaced apart deformable ribbon elements are disposed parallel to each other and span the channel. A bottom conductive layer is provided within said base and said bottom conductive layer is limited essentially to the cross-section of the channel.
