A data feed server configured for tracking usage of a data feed includes a data feed server configured to respond to polls from client computers and transmit a data feed in response to a poll from a client computer. The data feed server is further configured to received usage data from a client computer that indicates usage of the data feed at the client computer. A client computer for accessing a data feed includes a client computer configured to communicate with at least one data feed server that publishes a data feed. The client computer selectively polls the data feed server for the data feed. The client computer is further configured to record usage data indicating usage of the data feed at the client computer and, in a subsequent polling of the data feed sever, report the usage data for the data feed to the data feed server. A method of determining usage of a data feed includes collecting information with a data server that indicates whether a data feed provided by the data server was accessed by a user at a client computer to which the data server had transmitted the data feed.

Determining data feed usage

A method and system for controlling an operation of a Java Virtual Machine (JVM) component on a per-classloader basis. A manifest of a bundle in an Open Services Gateway Initiative (OSGi&#xae;) compliant framework is parsed and metadata in the manifest is identified. The metadata is stored in a Java&#xae; classloader uniquely associated with the bundle. An upcoming performance of an operation which can be affected by a value of the stored metadata is identified by the JVM component. A value of the stored metadata is read from the classloader. The operation of the JVM component is controlled based on the value of the stored metadata.

Controlling java virtual machine component behavior on a per-classloader basis

A system and associated method for tracing state information of a target object. The target object is a data item of an application object executed in a virtual machine. Upon detecting a triggering event pertaining to the target object while executing the application object, the virtual machine stores the state information of the target object in a target state info object in a heap space such that the state information is maintained across instances of the virtual machine. The target object is associated with the target state info object by using a weak hash map entry such that the target state info object is garbage collected when the target object is garbage collected and such that the state information is not excessively accumulated. A system dump containing the target object and the target state info object is produced when the application object fails.

Tracing objects in object-oriented programming model

One aspect of the present invention provides a alternative hypertext protocol to enable the selection of quick-to-download/reduced content from a website. In one embodiment, this alternative hypertext protocol uses the same structure as HTTP, but contains a unique predefined Uniform Resource Identifier (URI) scheme for easy designation by clients. On the web server, content is defined for HTTP connections and a quick-to-download version of this content is defined for alternative hypertext protocol connections. The HTTP content is made available on a first port on the web server, and the quick-to-download alternative hypertext protocol content is made available on a second port on the web server. To access the quick-to-download content, an internet connection is established to the second port of the web server using the alternative hypertext protocol. Once a connection is established to the second port, the web server transmits the quick-to-download content via the alternative hypertext protocol.

Selecting quick-to-download content through an alternative hypertext protocol

The invention relates to a method of operating a computer system supporting multiple processes, and the intention is to avoid deadlock (an example of which is where process A owns resource A, and is waiting on resource B, but resource B is currently owned by process B, which is waiting on resource A). The method commences with receipt of a request from a first process for access to a resource of said computer system. If the requested resource is currently unavailable because it is currently owned by another process, the system examines which processes own or are waiting for other resources on the system, in order to try to detect whether adding the first process to a queue for the requested resource would cause a deadlock situation to arise. If so, the system will typically throw an exception, or possibly return an error to the request for the resource.

Method and system for deadlock detection and avoidance

An object-based multi-threaded computing system has a cyclic garbage collection strategy and includes an object locking system having (i) a first mode in which access by a single thread without contention to an object is controlled by a monitor internal to said object, and (ii) a second mode in which access by multiple threads with contention to said object is controlled by a monitor external to said object. For any given object a transition from the first mode to the second mode is termed inflation, and a transition from the second mode to the first mode is termed deflation. Responsive to the start of a period of contention for an object in said first mode, the object is inflated to the second mode, and an inflation rate counter is incremented. After the period of contention has concluded the value of the inflation rate counter is compared against a predetermined value in order to determine whether or not to deflate the object. The inflation rate counter is reset at every garbage collection cycle.
