The present invention entails a battery identification system to be utilized by cellular telephones, battery chargers, and other electrical devices for identification of the battery types employed within such devices. The battery identification system comprises a battery type identification circuit that includes one or more input switches that are coupled to a voltage divider network that is made up of a series of voltage divider segments. Each voltage divider segment is designed to produce a signal that is indicative of the on/off state of a particular input switch. To actuate the input switches, the employed battery is provided with one or more switch actuators, where the position and spacing of the switch actuators on the battery in effect uniquely identifies the battery type. Various switching and actuating configurations are contemplated, including mechanical, galvanic, magnetic, and optical systems.

A touch screen input device includes a display screen adapted for receiving a touch input from a user; mechanism for sampling the touch screen input at any one of a plurality of sampling rates; mechanism for storing a predetermined sampling rate for each application or for each function; and mechanism for setting the sampling rate of the sampling mechanism to the sampling rate stored for a given application or a given function whenever that given application is being executed or that given function is being performed, respectively. In an alternative embodiment, the rate of change of the touch screen input sample points is measured and the sampling rate increased or decreased when the rate of change of the sample points increases or decreases, respectively.

A user input is communicated to an application resident on a data processing system according to a code set which is adaptively selected in response to the application, the selected code set mapping to a respective set of corresponding user inputs, the selected code set optimizing a performance parameter for communicating between a user input device and the application. The selected code set may be selected from a stored plurality of code sets. Preferably, the selected code set minimizes energy expended in communicating codes from the user input device to the data processing system. According to one aspect, the application may first be identified, and then the selected code set may be selected according to the identified application. According to another aspect, a plurality of user inputs to the application may be accepted at the user input device and recorded, and the selected code set may be selected based on the recorded plurality of user inputs.

A dual mode battery charger includes an input that accepts a DC power signal, and a switch that switches the DC power signal from the input responsive to a control signal to generate a charging signal for the battery. A dual mode controller generates the control signal so that during a high current charging mode the switch is closed, and so that during a low current charging mode the switch is switched at a duty-cycle of less than 100 percent.
