An engine for a vehicle. The engine includes a cast engine block having a hybrid insert disposed in a fastener bore having rolled internal threads. The hybrid insert includes an internal surface having cut inner diameter (ID) threads and an external surface having rolled outer diameter (OD) threads. The rolled OD threads of the hybrid insert are received in the rolled internal threads of the fastener bore. The hybrid threaded insert may include a bi-metal in which the ID threads are formed of one metal alloy and the OD threads are formed of another metal alloy. Alternatively, the external surface of the hybrid insert may define locking features and the engine block is cast onto these locking features, thereby locking the hybrid insert to the engine block.

An attachment assembly for attaching a generator to a motor vehicle engine is provided. The assembly may include at least one engine attachment boss secured to the engine. The attachment assembly may further include a plurality of generator housing legs integrally formed with a generator housing. The assembly may further include a support dowel fitted, at a first end, within the bore located on the inner opposing side of one of the plurality of generator housing legs. The support dowel may be inserted, at a second end, into the bore of the at least one engine attachment boss, in order to couple the generator to the engine during assembly. This combination allows placement and fixation of the generator to the engine by a single operator without the need for an assembly assist device. A method for securing a generator to a motor vehicle engine is also provided.

A cooling system for an engine assembly includes an engine block that defines a coolant flow passage configured to carry coolant through the engine block. The engine block also defines an oil flow passage configured to carry lubricating oil through the engine block. The oil flow passage at least partially surrounds the coolant flow passage and is sufficiently adjacent to the coolant flow passage so that the lubricating oil flowing in the oil flow passage is cooled by the coolant flowing in the coolant flow passage by heat transfer through the engine block. The engine block may define ridges along the coolant flow passage that increase a surface area of the coolant flow passage to increase heat transfer capability. The engine block may define two such coolant flow passages, a first and a second coolant flow passage, positioned so that the oil flow passage passes between the coolant flow passages.

A modular engine assembly includes a cylinder bore block, a cylinder head disposed above the cylinder bore block, and a crankcase assembly disposed below the cylinder bore block. The crankcase assembly includes an upper carrier and a lower carrier each having a plurality of bearing portions therein being integral, unitary, and one-piece.

Simplified engine architecture and assembly

An engine block mold package includes a barrel crankcase core having a plurality of barrels on each of which a respective cylinder bore liner is disposed. Each cylinder bore liner includes an inside diameter that is tapered along at least a portion of its length to match a draft angle present on the barrels to permit removal of the barrel crankcase core from a core box in which it is formed.

An automotive reciprocating engine design is disclosed preferably including an extruded cylinder bore block with cylinder bores and a surrounding coolant passage extending from a top flat surface to a bottom flat surface; a cast, closed bottom, open top crankcase with vertical walls having flat upper surfaces; and a stamped metal mid-plate interposed in sealing relationship between the bottom surface of the cylinder block and the flat top surfaces of the crankcase. The crankcase contains bearing supports for a crankshaft and the mid-plate contains holes for connecting rods attached to pistons in the cylinder bores. The design facilitates low cost manufacture of strong, light weight components and easier assembly of the engine, and permits flexible manufacture of a family of engines with different displacements by substitution of a cylinder block of different length or of different bore diameter.

Modular engine architecture

An engine cylinder block assembly for a V-type engine wherein inner walls of the cylinder banks define a relatively oil free valley which is closed by a rigid valley cover to provide additional stiffness to the inside walls of the blocks, thereby stiffening the block against vibration and bending. The valley cover also includes sealed pockets for enclosing knock sensors mounted upon upwardly extending bosses in the bottom of the valley to both protect the knock sensors and permit their removal without requiring removal of the valley cover from the engine cylinder block. Oil entrainment due to pulsing air flows between crank chambers of the engine are reduced by providing openings in the valley floor between the front and rear crank chambers of the engine while the adjacent inner crank chambers are separated from direct connection with the valley.

A main bearing cap for an internal combustion engine has a longitudinally extending body defined in pan by parallel sides which terminate in first and second end portions. The bearing cap has a centrally located, semi-cylindrical bearing recess which cooperates with a corresponding recess in the engine crankcase to support journals of a crankshaft along a crankcase axis. The first and second end portions of the bearing cap include laterally outwardly extending flanged feet having end faces which mate with corresponding surfaces on the engine crankcase. The flanged feet operate against the engine crankcase to limit motion of the bearing cap body.

An internal disk milling cutter has a pair of cutting edges swept back symmetrically from a forwardmost cutting corner, and a concave upper surface behind the cutting edges, so that the insert may be oriented on the cutter body in such a way as to provide a low force, skiving action.

The disclosure reveals a computer vision technique to measure flank and crater wear of a single point cutting tool. This direct tool wear measurement method uses a microscope mounted camera to acquire an image of the tool. Special lighting of a face of the tool shows contrast of the wear region in the image. The image analysis is based on an interactive procedure utilizing a general purpose image processing system. A computer program calculates ten parameters to characterize flank and crater wear.

An improved cutting tooth configuration in which, unlike the conventional, straight line tool pattern with its constant tool rise, each tooth is incrementally advanced relative to the prior tooth by an amount that progressively decreases. This accounts for the variations in reaction force on the cutting teeth caused by workpiece deflections, so that the net thickness of material removed by each cutting tooth remains relatively constant. Instability and variation in the cutting force is thereby avoided, and tool wear is decreased.
