A pre-slit injection site includes a housing with a flow path therethrough. A first end of the housing carries a pre-slit septum. One form of a blunt cannula, usable with the injection site, carries a locking member. When the pre-slit injection site slidably receives the blunt cannula, the locking member latches to the injection site and creates a mechanically coupled unit. Another form of the cannula includes a tube having a tapered distal end region and having elongate discharge slots for reducing contact surface area and for directing the flow laterally out of the cannula. The cannula may also include a rounded lead post, an annular barb, and axially oriented grooves.

Pre-slit injection site and tapered cannula

A retractable syringe includes a barrel, one end of which comprises a mounting collar. A needle carrier is releasably mounted within the collar and releaseably supports a needle cartridge. A hypodermic needle is mounted within the cartridge. A sheath attaches at one end of the cartridge and at the other end of the collar. A plunger is telescoped into the barrel and includes a piston sealingly engaging the barrel. The piston includes a latch for engaging the carrier and releasing it from the collar. The piston and carrier also include an anti-remount mechanism preventing the carrier from being reengaged into the collar. To preform this, a separate tool is used to insert the carrier into the collar. The plunger further includes surfaces to displace fluid as the piston is forced toward the proximal end of the barrel to displace fluid to reduce squirt. A cap is also provided to initially seal off the proximal end of the barrel and after usage to form a seal by engaging teeth within the proximal end of the barrel.

Retractable syringe

An infuser apparatus for the delivery of fluid at accurate and controlled rates of flow comprising a housing, a deformable member, inlet means and outlet means. Fluid is introduced through the inlet means forcing the deformable member to bend away from its normal position and to generate a pressure force against the fluid introduced. When the outlet means is opened, the fluid is expelled by means of the deformable member returning to its normal position. The infuser apparatus may expel the fluid at either a constant or at a varied and controlled rate depending on the configuration of the deformable member. Further, multiple infusers may be coupled together in a fluid delivery system.

Drug infuser

An apparatus for the patient-controlled delivery of a beneficial agent comprising a dose reservoir for receiving and storing a beneficial agent, inlet means to and outlet means from the dose reservoir and pump means operative in response to an external force supplied to the pump means for drawing beneficial agent into the dose reservoir at a relatively constant rate and for discharging the beneficial agent out of the dose reservoir through the outlet means.

Patient-controlled analgesia device

A retractable syringe includes a barrel [12, 212], one end of which comprises a mounting collar [14, 214]. A needle carrier [16, 216] is releasably mounted within the collar [14, 214], and releasably supports a needle cartridge [18, 218]. A hypodermic needle [20] is mounted within the cartridge [18, 218]. A sheath [22, 222, 418, 420, 422] attaches at one end to the cartridge, and at the other end to the collar. A plunger [36, 236] is telescoped into the barrel [12, 218], and includes a relatively hard piston sealingly engaging the barrel [12, 218]. The piston includes a latch [38, 238] for engaging the carrier [16, 216] and releasing it from the collar [14, 214]. A pocket [76, 476] in the carrier has a support member [54] in its center, and a pair of helical ribs [64] for threadingly engaging a pair of tabs on the cartridge [18, 218]. The cartridge [18, 218] sealingly receives the support member [54]. The collar [14, 214] has slots [82] and inclined threads [84, 256] in its bore wall for engaging lugs [48, 248] on the carrier. The inclined threads [84, 256] have a friction bump [86, 270] near their blind ends. A retaining pin [92, 94] prevents relative rotation between the carrier [16, 216] and collar [14, 214] prior to desired retraction of the needle [20] into the barrel [12, 212]. Alternative embodiments include a barrel which may be resilient or non-resilient and a hard or soft resilient piston, respectively, having a plunger head secured therewithin and attached to the plunger. A latch is attached to the plunger head, and is received in a recess in the carrier to engage latch stops for rotating the carrier to release it from the collar. Alternative embodiments may include means for securing the plunger in the barrel after retraction.

An apparatus for delivering fluid with a relatively constant, controlled rate of flow comprises a vacuum power means, a fluid storage means in axial alignment with the vacuum power means and a plunger means carried by the vacuum power means and in axial communication with the fluid storage means. The plunger means is driven by a vacuum which collapses under atmospheric pressure, and as it is driven it effects delivery of the fluid from the fluid storage means.

Self-driven pump device

A medical fluid administration set is disclosed which may be used for the passive reconstitution and delivery of a drug or other beneficial agent with liquid flowing through the administration set. A receptacle mounted in the administration set is adapted for receiving a cartridge containing the beneficial agent. Also disclosed is an adapter for connecting the cartridge and the receptacle and an air flask within the administration set.

A cartridge for introducing a beneficial agent into a medical fluid conduit is disclosed. The cartridge includes a pierceable stopper having a hollow, open ended protrusion extending into the cartridge chamber and having the beneficial agent retained therein by a liquid pervious barrier. The hollow, open ended protrusion creates a directed flow path within the cartridge.

A housing is provided for insertion in an intravenous delivery system including a fluid source and a fluid conduit. The housing is adapted for receiving a beneficial agent to be mixed with fluid flowing through the fluid conduit. The beneficial agent is reconstituted within the housing, eliminating the need for manual reconstitution. The housing may comprise a separate receptacle and cartridge in which the receptacle is manufactured 'in-line' in an administration set and the cartridge is adapted for receiving a beneficial agent. In one embodiment of the invention, the cartridge is a standard drug vial.

A cartridge 444, 644, 744 is adapted for mounting upon a receptacle 442, 642 in a parenterial fluid administration set 420 for delivering a drug or other beneficial agent to a patient. The cartridge 444, 644, 744 includes a beneficial agent-containing chamber 606 slidable from a first, pre-use position to a second, post-use position. The cartridge includes a hollow tube 496 in which the chamber 606 is at least partially mounted. At least one cannula 500 is mounted to the hollow tube and extends opposite the chamber. A protective cover or cap 530 maintains a chamber protective position that prevents inadvertent movement of the chamber that would accidentally engage the cartridge chamber with a flow path member, such as the cannula. The cover is removed in order to engage the chamber. After delivery of the agent to the patient, the cartridge is removed from the receptacle 442,642 and the cover 530 is selectively moved to a cannula protective position in which the cover 530 is securely mounted about the second, opposite end of the hollow tube, covering the cannula 500.

A cartridge 444, 644, 744 having a drug or other beneficial agent 608 therein and including an adapter 477 is positioned on a receptacle 442, 642 within a parenteral fluid administration set 420. Also disclosed is an adapter 477' for connecting the receptacle 442, 642 to a chamber 606 having a beneficial agent therein. The cartridge and adapter permit a single opening through the injection site at the receptacle and at the chamber at opposite ends of the flow path means while still permitting simultaneous flow both into and out of the chamber and the receptacle.
