An apparatus comprises a storage device and a device controller operatively coupled with the storage device. The device controller comprises a memory that stores an application. The application stored on the memory comprises instructions. When executed, the instruction direct the device controller to receive a storage request comprising content. The device controller retrieves a storage device policy from the memory that indicates a set of storage locations on the storage device. The device controller selects one of the storage locations on the storage device based on the storage device policy. The device controller stores the content on the storage device at the selected storage location. The device controller records storage information for the content that indicates the selected location on the memory.

Data storage device with configurable policy-based storage device behavior

In an embodiment, a storage device is provided. A device controller with a memory is coupled with the storage device. The memory stores an application with instructions that direct the controller to receive a storage device policy. The instructions further direct the controller to store content from a storage request in accordance with the storage device policy, and record storage information, including at least a content identifier, to the memory. Subsequent to storing the content, the instructions further direct the controller to retrieve the content according to the storage information received in a storage request. According to an implementation, the instructions further provide instruction to refuse a delete request in accordance with the storage information. According to an implementation, the instructions provide direction to store the storage information at a remote location.

In an embodiment, a storage device is provided. A device controller with a memory is coupled with the storage device. The memory stores an application with instructions that direct the controller to receive a storage device policy. The instructions further direct the controller to store content from a storage request in accordance with the storage device policy, and record storage information, including at least a content identifier, to the memory. Subsequent to storing the content, the instructions further direct the controller to retrieve the content according to the storage information received in a storage request. According to an implementation, the instructions further provide instruction to refuse a delete request in accordance to the storage information. According to an implementation, the instructions provide direction to store the storage information at a remote location.

Congestion is minimized on a desired port in an Ethernet bridge. A packet with a destination address and a source address is received on an incoming port. An address table is search to determine a destination port associated with the destination address. If the destination port is not determined by the search then flooding the packet on all of the ports except the desired port if the incoming port is determined to be equal to the desired port; and flooding the packet on all of the ports except the incoming port and the desired port if the incoming port is determined to be not equal to the desired port.

Flexible Ethernet bridge

A method of manufacturing a disk drive is disclosed in which servo information is written in tracks on a disk surface, the track width performance of the associated read/write transducer is measured, the track width performance is analyzed and a data track pitch is established. Based on the data track pitch established, a track location formula for data tracks on the surface is defined. For a disk drive with a plurality of read/write transducer-media surface combinations, a track location formula for data tracks is established for each combination. Disclosed is a method of measuring a track width performance of a read/write transducer which includes the steps of writing a first test pattern having a first waveform with the read/write transducer at location t on the surface of a magnetic medium, reading the first test pattern and measuring an error rate of the signal, followed by moving the read/write transducer in a first direction a predetermined distance from location t and writing a second test pattern comprised of a waveform different than the first waveform, moving the read/write transducer in a second direction to a position distance d from location t and writing a third test pattern comprised of a waveform different to the first test pattern. The first test pattern is read at location t and the error rate of the signal is measured. A disk drive including a disk having a first magnetic surface, a first read/write transducer associated with the first magnetic surface for reading and writing data in tracks in a plurality of zones each zone having a read/write frequency, a first load beam for supporting and positioning the first read/write transducer at a plurality of locations above the surface of the magnetic media as disclosed and the drives produced utilizing the steps of writing servo information in tracks on the surface at a track pitch, followed by measuring a track width performance of the read/write transducer and establishing a track pitch for data tracks as a function of the measured track width performance.

Disk drive with variable track density

A bridge operates in either VLAN aware mode or VLAN unaware mode as specified by a user. A packet is received in a priority tagged format containing an associated VLAN identifier. The packet is processed according to a VLAN aware mode by setting said VLAN identifier equal an identifier associated with the incoming port on which said packet is received An address table is searched using a destination address and the VLAN identifier to determine a destination port. The packet is sent to the determined destination port.

Flexible ethernet bridge

A method of manufacturing a disk drive is disclosed in which servo information is written in tracks on a disk surface, the track width performance of the associated read/write transducer is measured, the track width performance is analyzed and a data track pitch is established. Based on the established track pitch, a track location formula for data tracks on the disk surface is defined. For a disk drive having a plurality of read/write transducers, a track location formula is established for each transducer. A method for measuring track width performance of a read/write head is also disclosed.

Systems and methodologies are disclosed for interfacing a storage medium with a host using a segmented buffer. Data blocks are transferred between the host and medium according to logical block addresses, with buffer segment pointers indicating the logical block addresses of data blocks in the buffer. Buffer management hardware or firmware compares the pointer values directly with logical block addresses from host commands in order to determine whether desired data blocks are within the buffer.

A method of manufacturing a disk drive which includes a disk having first and second magnetic surfaces and first and second read/write transducers for writing information on and reading information from the magnetic surfaces. The method includes determining a track width performance characteristic to be measured for the read/write transducers, establishing ranges of values for the performance characteristic to define a plurality of performance groups. The performance characteristic is measured for a plurality of read/write transducers from which the first and second read/write transducers for the disk drive are to be selected and the read/write transducers are segregated into groups based on the performance characteristic value falling within the range of the group. The disk drive is assembled using read/write transducers from only one of the groups. The measurement of the performance characteristic is accomplished either electrically or optically.

A magnetic recording system utilizing a plurality of surfaces on a magnetic recording disk with recording zone boundaries established on the respective surfaces of the disk based on performance characteristics of the read/write transducer associated with the surface. The performance of the read/write transducer from the aspects of the width of the track written by the transducers as well as the recording performance at the expected recording frequency, are both utilized in building disk drives. Since the zone boundaries are established uniquely for the performance of each transducer, rather than by defining the boundaries of all zones for all surface in advance based on assumed performance characteristics of the heads, the zone boundaries on one surface of the disk will not necessarily align with the zone boundaries on another surface of the disk. Similarly, when a plurality of disks are utilized, the zone boundaries will not necessarily be aligned. Improved utilization of the available stroke on the disk drive permits further improvement in recording density. A magnetic recording system utilizing a magnetic recording disk. In some embodiments, one magnetic surface is utilized with an associated read/write transducer supported by a load beam. In other embodiments, the disk has a plurality of magnetic surfaces, each having an associated read/write transducer for reading and writing data in tracks in a plurality of zones and an associated load beam for supporting and positioning the respective read/write transducer at a plurality of locations above the respective surface. In one embodiment, the radial boundaries of the zones and read/write frequency for each zone are defined as a function of the number of available tracks on the recording surface. In another embodiment, the radial boundaries of the zones and read/write frequency for the zones are defined as a function of the read/write performance of the read/write transducer with respect to its associated magnetic surface. In a further embodiment, a read/write performance of the read/write transducer is determined, the recording performance of the magnetic surface is determined and the radial boundaries for each zones and the read/write frequencies for each zone are established as a function of the performances.
