A method and device provide for automatically reconfiguring a computer network in response to an operating system image migration from a first hardware platform to a second hardware platform. The method includes detecting a boot up command and in response, initializing a fix up utility, creating a new network configuration for the migrated operating system image and storing the new network configuration information; reading the new network configuration information and old network configuration information corresponding to the first hardware platform; determining if any of the new network configuration information corresponds to a new network interface controller and if any of the old network information corresponds to a non-assigned network interface controller; and if any of the old network configuration information corresponds to a non-assigned network interface controller, reassigning network interface controller identifiers from the old network configuration information to the new network interface controller.

Automatic fixup of network configuration on system image move

A method for remote execution of software. A device manager instantiates a WMI CreateProcess object on a managed device which will call an executable residing on the device manager. The process is started, calling an executable on the device manager. The executable on the device manager is called and launched on the managed device. The executable starts and finishes on the managed device.

Remote execution of software using windows management instrumentation

A method and apparatus for discovering IP and MAC addresses by an application program in a network. The network includes a number of SNMP-manageable and non-SNMP-manageable devices. Active devices can be discovered by the discovery node through a serial pinging mechanism which populates the MIB of the discovery node with IP and/or MAC addresses of all the devices on the network. An SNMP agent on the network is then used to perform a GetNext request that returns to the process layer the IP and MAC addresses of the non-SNMP manageable and SNMP-manageable devices.

Apparatus and method for IP and MAC address discovery at the process layer

When an operating system for the computing system opens, creates or renames a file, a new full path name of the file is added to a history queue. When the operating system sends a message to an application process indicating a new window title, the history queue is searched, starting with a most recent entry, for a matching full path name which includes the new window title. When the matching full path name which includes the new window title is found within the history queue, an icon which is attached to the matching full name path is displayed on the computer screen. When the operating system sends a message to the application process indicating the application process is to be closed, the history queue is flushed. When the operating system sends a message to the application process indicating the application process is to be destroyed, the history queue is searched for a full path name which includes an extension for the application process. When the history queue has a full path name which includes an extension for the application process, an icon which is attached to the matching full name path is displayed on the computer screen.

File menu support for encapsulated applications

An object oriented distributed computing system is provided. Processing means call a location service within automatically generated stubs in response to a request for a service provided by a particular object. The location service is automatically called on behalf of the requester to locate the target object when the request is issued. Multiple Object Managers reflecting multiple Object Models are permitted in the system. Programmers and users do not need to know the Object Model adhered to by an Object Manager. A request to any object in the system is independent of the Object Model of the sought object's Object Manager. A generic interface enables new Object Managers reflecting new Object Models to be easily added to the system. Availability of the target object is independent of association of the target object with a process at the time the request was issued. Deactivation of processes is automatically accomplished in response to the system needing resources.
