A switchable light modulating device with an electrophoretic medium disposed between a first light-transmissive electrode layer and a second electrode layer. The device includes one or more apodization structures in a bottom of a cell that contains the electrophoretic fluid, and the apodization structures reduce optical interference when the cell is in an open state and the structure is viewed with reflected or transmitted light passing through the apodization structure.

An active molecule delivery system whereby active molecules can be released on demand and/or a variety of different active molecules can be delivered from the same system and/or different concentrations of active molecules can be delivered from the same system. The invention is well-suited for delivering pharmaceuticals to patients transdermally. In some embodiments, the system includes two separate reservoirs and a mixing area thereby allowing precursors to be mixed immediately before transdermal delivery.

A parking space management system includes a bistable reflective display, such as an electrophoretic display, which is sunlight-readable and only requires power when the information on the display is updated. One or more detectors are configured to determine the presence of an object within a bounded space, such as a parking space, and communicate that status to the bistable reflective display, thereby causing the bistable reflective display to show the presence of an object within the bounded space to an observer. Such a system is easy to implement and will save drivers' time because they don't have to hunt for a parking spot. Such a system also reduces tailpipe emissions because it is not necessary to drive up and down multiple aisles of cars looking for an open parking spot.

An electro-optic device comprises in order, an electrically-conductive light-transmissive layer, an electro-optic material layer, an adhesive layer, and a backplane substrate comprising a plurality of pixel electrodes configured to apply an electrical potential between the electrically-conductive light-transmissive layer and the pixel electrodes. An activation region, comprising an identification marker, is located in a layer of the electro-optic device and it emits radiation of a characteristic wavelength upon activation by a stimulus, enabling the identification of the manufacturing source and the manufacturing lot of the electro-optic device and its components. The technology is also relevant for a front plane laminate and a double release sheet, which are useful components for the manufacture of electro-optic devices.

A lamp includes a variable transmissive film and a light source arranged to transmit light through the variable transmissive film. The variable transmissive film includes an encapsulated dispersion containing a plurality of electrically charged particles and a fluid, the charged particles being movable by application of an electric field and capable of being switched between an open state and a diffusing state. In some embodiments, one portion of the variable transmission film is in the open state and one portion is in the closed state, thereby allowing light from the source to be shaped, e.g., into task lighting.
