Inorganic composite coatings comprising novel functionalized acrylics

Disclosed is cross-linking process for cross-linking polymeric chains in a coating composition. In one embodiment the process utilizes a Hantzsch dihydropyridine reaction to form reaction products including cross-linking polymeric resin chains having beta-keto ester functions using a source of aldehyde and a source of ammonia or a primary amine to form a permanent dihydropyridine bond between the beta-keto ester functions. The novel cross-linking reaction can occur at lower temperatures compared to typical cross-linking reactions and can occur in aqueous solutions that have a neutral to mildly alkaline pH of from 6 to 11. The novel cross-linking reaction provides many advantages to performing cross-linking of polymeric chains in coating resins.

Cross-linking mechanism for thin organic coatings based on the Hantzsch di-hydropyridine synthesis reaction

Disclosed is a neutral to alkaline inorganic conversion coating composition that can be applied directly to a metal surface without a phosphatizing pre-treatment and that provides significant corrosion protection to the surface. The coating composition is very versatile and can accommodate addition of a wide variety of organic polymers which can be added directly to the coating composition thus eliminating multistep coating processes.

What is disclosed is a water-based adhesive composition that is an aqueous dispersion or emulsion of a polymer component having functional groups that are inactive in a reversible manner in the adhesive composition as prepared; and a water-soluble, or water emulsion, or dispersion of a cross linker component having functional groups wherein the functional groups are inactive in a reversible manner in the adhesive composition as prepared. Preferably the adhesive composition has a pH of from 7 to 11 and a volatile stabilizing base component is used to inactivate the functional groups and to provide the pH. The functional groups in the polymer component and the cross linker component are activated when the volatile base is removed during lamination heat treatment. The adhesive composition can be used to adhere a variety of plastic films to metal substrates without reliance on non-water-based adhesives.

Water-based adhesive for lamination of polymers to metal substrates

Disclosed is a method for providing an anti-corrosion protective coating to a metal substrate that uses a coating composition comprising a resin and a polyfunctional bridging molecule to both bind to the resin and to chelate the bound polymeric resin directly to the metal substrate. One category of polyfunctional bridging molecules preferably includes at least one amine function to bind to a resin and at least one carboxylate, thiol, silane, phenolate, acetoacetonate, imine, phosphate, or phosphonate function to chelate to a metal substrate. It is theorized that the amine function can bind to certain pendent chains in coating resins through a Michael addition reaction while the carboxylate, thiol, silane, phenolate, acetoacetonate, imine, phosphate, or phosphonate functions chelate to the metal substrate. These polyfunctional bridging molecules provide an organic binding of the resin to the metal substrates.

Cross linking thin organic coating resins to substrates through polyfunctional bridging molecules

Disclosed is a release on demand type corrosion inhibitor composition for a metal substrate formed from only non-electrically conductive film forming copolymer(s); a nitrogen containing functional group X, where the group X comprises a pyridine, a dihydropyridine, a pyrrole, an imidazole, or a mixtures thereof; and a metallate anion. The metallate anion binds to a nitrogen in the functional group X by ion pairing. A localized rise in pH is believed to cause release of the anion via a protonation/deprotonation reaction and the released anion suppresses the corrosion formation. The coating composition includes no electrically conductive polymers.

The invention provides high solids epoxy-based autodeposition coating materials that have improved moisture barrier properties and/or anti-corrosive properties and a means to obtain the high solids epoxy-based autodeposition coating materials that eliminates/minimizes the need for process solvents. A hydrophobic water barrier enhancing agent, epoxy pre-polymer and ethylenically unsaturated monomer, as an alternative to organic solvent, are combined to yield an epoxy pre-polymer-monomer-hydrophobic water barrier enhancing agent blend, which may be blended with other coating components and additives. The resulting blend is then dispersed in water with surfactant and the ethylenically unsaturated monomer is polymerized (in the presence of other formulation components) to yield a dispersion. The dispersion may then be used as one component of a coating formulation. The coating formulation can then be applied to materials and cured to form a final coating.

Coatings with enhanced water-barrier and anti-corrosive properties

The invention provides high solids epoxy-based autodeposition coating materials and a means to obtain the high solids epoxy-based autodeposition coating materials that eliminates/minimizes the need for process solvents. An epoxy pre-polymer is used. The epoxy pre-polymer is combined with ethylenically unsaturated monomer, as an alternative to organic solvent, to yield an epoxy-monomer blend, which may be blended with other coating components and additives. The resulting blend is then dispersed in water with surfactant and the ethylenically unsaturated monomer is polymerized (in the presence of other formulation components) to yield a dispersion. The dispersion may then be used as one component of a coating formulation. The coating formulation can then be applied to materials and cured to form a final coating.

Corrosion resistant films based on ethylenically unsaturated monomer modified epoxy emulsions

A method of preparing a carbamate or urea-functional compound is described comprising the step of reacting a lactone or hydroxy carboxylic acid with a compound (A) comprising a carbamate or urea group or a group that can be converted to a carbamate or urea group, and an active hydrogen group capable of reacting with the hydroxy carboxylic acid or in a ring-opening reaction with a lactone. The compound thus prepared is useful in curable compositions.

Epoxy resins that have one or more functional groups that impart an anionic character to the epoxy resins are prepared. The resulting anionic functionalized epoxy resins may be used to produce high solids, epoxy-based dispersions that are capable of being used as a component of a coating bath which can provide to a coating that may be applied to a surface using a variety of techniques.

Epoxy dispersions for use in coatings

Autodeposited coatings useful for protecting metal surfaces and in production of rubber-to-metal composites are obtained by curing adducts based on epoxy resins which are adhered to the metal surface. One or more epoxy resins, such as for example, the combination of a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and a flexibilizing epoxy resin, may be prereacted to form an adduct of higher average molecular weight than the starting epoxy resins. Said adduct may then be dispersed in water, with the resulting dispersion being used in an autodeposition bath composition.

Epoxy resin-based autodeposition coatings

Autodeposition compositions for polymeric coatings of reduced gloss are prepared using resins having at least one hydroxy group and at least one epoxy group per molecule, a low temperature crosslinker and a high temperature crosslinker. The low temperature crosslinker forms a reactive prepolymer that may be subsequently mixed or emulsified with a high temperature crosslinker to form an autodeposition composition. Alternatively, a hybrid crosslinking agent may be utilized which contains both free isocyanate groups reactive at a relatively low temperature with the resin and at least one functional group capable of reacting with the resin only at a relatively elevated temperature. When deposited and cured, the resulting coating has a matte finish that is resistant to surface defects.
