A component system and method is described that is made of components for transmitting, routing and receiving 'in-air' optical signals for placement on printed wiring boards (PWBs). The transmitters are components including a light source attached to a transparent substrate and aligned to a coupling lens. The transparent substrate can contain circuitry for controlling the light source, or the circuitry could be attached to the transparent substrate. The receivers include a light detector attached to a transparent substrate with circuitry for converting optical signals to electrical circuitry (integrated onto the transparent substrate or separately attached). The routing components include a lens for coupling light into an optical waveguide, an optical waveguide and, optionally, a second lens for coupling light from the optical waveguide. The component system allows in-air optical communication between PWBs, without requiring traditional connections and harnesses between the PWBs, thus increasing their reliability and throughput.

Attachable components for providing an optical interconnect between/through printed wiring boards

A hyperspectral imager that achieves accurate spectral and spatial resolution by using a micro-lens array as a series of field lenses, with each lens distributing a point in the image scene received through an objective lens across an area of a detector array forming a hyperspectral detector super-pixel. Spectral filtering is performed by a spectral filter array positioned at the objective lens so that each sub-pixel within a super-pixel receives light that has been filtered by a bandpass or other type filter and is responsive to a different band of the image spectrum. The micro-lens spatially corrects the focused image point to project the same image scene point onto all sub-pixels within a super-pixel.

Spatially corrected full-cubed hyperspectral imager

A device and method for accurate delivery of a liquid is described. The device comprises a flow channel through which the liquid flows. During manufacture or at some other point prior to the delivery of the liquid, the flow channel is characterized in terms of one or more properties of flow of a liquid through the channel. This characterization is stored in such a way that the flow channel characterization is available to the liquid delivery device at time of use. At time of use, the liquid delivery system reads the stored flow channel characterization and uses the stored flow channel characterization for safe and accurate delivery of the liquid.

Compensating liquid delivery system and method

Systems and methods for measuring the flow of a liquid along a conduit are disclosed. A heat source applies thermal energy to a portion of a liquid flowing along a conduit thereby elevating its temperature. A light source generates a first beam that passes through the liquid in the conduit downstream from the position of application of the thermal energy and an optical detector receives this beam in combination with a second beam that is not passed through the liquid in the conduit and measures a change in intensity of a combined beam. The time required for the heated portion of the liquid to move from the point of application of thermal energy to the point at which the beam passes through the liquid is measured. This measured time, along with the distance of separation of the heat source and the optical sensing means permits calculation of the velocity of the liquid in the conduit.

Liquid measuring system

Each sub-pixel within a super-pixel has a bandpass or other type filter to pass a different band of the image spectrum. The micro-lens spatially corrects the focused image point to project the same image scene point onto all sub-pixels within a super-pixel. A color separator can be used to split the image into sub-bands, with each sub-band image projected onto a different spatially corrected detector array. A shaped limiting aperture can be used to isolate the image scene point within each super-pixels and minimize energy coupling to adjacent super-pixels.

Systems and methods for measuring the flow of a liquid along a conduit are disclosed. A heat source applies thermal energy to a portion of a liquid flowing along a conduit thereby elevating its temperature. An optical sensing means comprising a light source illuminating the liquid in the conduit downstream from the position of application of the thermal energy and an optical detector receiving a portion of this illumination senses the heated portion of liquid by measures a change in an optical property of the illumination caused by a change in the index of refraction of the heated portion of liquid. The time required for the heated portion of the liquid to move from the point of application of thermal energy to the point of optical sensing is measured. This measured time, along with the distance of separation of the heat source and the optical sensing means permits calculation of the velocity of the liquid in the conduit.

Liquid metering system

A mask for generating a high density regular matrix of working images for generating a corresponding high density regular matrix of vias in a substrate, the computer generated holographic images from overlapped subapertures are processed for maximum fluence. For each working image, a diverging wave front of the first order is propagated using Fresnel diffraction to produce for that wave front the corresponding first order holographic image at a central unit cell. The first order holographic image for each of the working images to be produced by the unit cell is added until the configuration of a unit mask cell containing portions of all working images to be broadcast is attained. The projection from the unit cell to working image is arbitrarily altered to attain the smallest local maximum first order transmission requirement within the central unit cell; the large local maximum first order transmission requirements are essentially moved outside the bounds of the central unit cell. Thereafter, the obtained first order intensity pattern for the central unit cell that represents the holographic image with the smallest local maximum first order transmission requirement is arbitrarily clipped in transmission of the first order. The remaining clipped first order transmission requirement is re-normalized.

Optimization of overlapping holographic lens array for creating via

A technique is described which provides for directly placing multiple patterns on a nonconducting substrate using an electron beam. Prior to patterning, a conductive coating is applied to the nonconductive substrate. The patterns are generated by controlling the position and the speed of movement of the electron beam. Each pattern contains fiducials lying outside of the pattern's active region. After a conductive layer has been exposed, the patterned regions are removed, typically through etching. A separate etch is used to etch the pattern into substrate. The unpatterned portions of the conductive coating are then removed and a new conductive coating is applied to the substrate, insuring that the fiducials are protected during the removal procedure so that they can be used to align subsequent patterns. This procedure is repeated as many times as necessary to form the desired number of patterns in the substrate. This procedure is directly applicable to the generation of computer-generated holograms, specifically diffractive optics. This technique can also be used to generate phase-shifted lithographic mask.
