A system includes a body, a sensor, a pressurized fluid source, and a blockage detection module. The body defines a cavity open to an ambient environment at a port. The sensor communicates with the cavity to produce a signal representative of a fluid pressure within the cavity. The blockage detection module includes a pressure regulator and a valve disposed along a conduit fluidly connecting the pressurized fluid source to the cavity. The blockage detection module includes a processor and memory encoded with instructions of a blockage detection method.

Probe blockage detection and removal

A method of monitoring an ice protection system of a rotorcraft or an aircraft includes applying heat to rotating blades of the rotorcraft or the aircraft according to a heater duty cycle and determining an anticipated ice shed time for ice to shed from the rotating blades. Torque of the rotating blades is sensed, and an actual ice shed time for ice to shed from the rotating blades is determined based on the sensed torque. A status of the ice protection system is determined based on the anticipated ice shed time and the actual ice shed time, and the status of the ice protection system is output for consumption by a consuming system.

An angle of attack sensor includes a rotatable vane extending away and support from a mounting plate, a housing extending way from an opposite side of the mounting plate, and a sensor coupled to the vane. The angle of attack sensor communicates with an electronics module enclosed within the housing or mounted remotely with respect to the angle of attack sensor. The electronics module includes a processor, computer-readable memory, and a communication device. The computer-readable memory is encoded with instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the electronics module to perform steps of a damage detection method.

A method for transmitting data in an air data system with a digital interface includes measuring at least one air data parameter with at least one air data component. The method includes generating a digital signal representative of the at least one air data parameter with the at least one air data component, sending the digital signal to a receiving system, and processing the at least one air data parameter with the receiving system.

Digital air data systems and methods

An air data system includes a laser emitter, a laser receiver, and an electronics module. The electronics module includes a processor and computer-readable memory encoded with instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the laser to emit a coherent light pulse into a target volume locating within an exhaust flow aft of an aircraft. The laser receiver detects backscatter produced by the coherent light pulse interacting with the aft target volume, and the electronics module determines an air data parameter based on the backscatter and at least one of an engine parameter indicative of an engine condition of the aircraft and an aircraft parameter indicative of a state of the aircraft before outputting the air data parameter to a consuming system of the aircraft.

Laser airspeed measurement sensor incorporating reversion capability

A method of inspecting an air data probe for damage or misalignment on a mounting surface includes retrieving reference data for the air data probe from a database, capturing images of the air data probe via a camera and generating dimensions from the captured images of the air data probe via a feature extractor. An alignment calculator analyzes the generated dimensions from the captured images of the air data probe and the reference data for the air data probe from the database to identify misalignment of the air data probe, and analyzes the generated dimensions from the captured images of the air data probe and the reference data for the air data probe from the database to identify damage of the air data probe. A maintenance recommendation for the air data probe is generated and outputted, based on the identified misalignment or damage of the air data probe.

System for the inspection of air data probes

An anti-spin system for an aircraft can include an anti-spin module configured to execute a computer implemented method. The method can include receiving flight data from one or more aircraft flight data systems, determining if the aircraft is near stall or in a stall using the flight data, and determining if the aircraft is in uncoordinated flight while near stall or in a stall to determine if the aircraft is near spin or in a spin using the flight data. If the aircraft is determined to be near spin, the method includes at least one of sending an alert to a warning indicator in a cockpit to warn the pilot of a spin or near spin condition, or sending a signal to an automated control system for inputting automatic control to the aircraft to avoid a spin by coordinating the aircraft or avoiding a stall while uncoordinated.

A aircraft health management system for identifying an anomalous signal from one or more air data systems (ADS) includes one or more of a frequency processor, configured to provide a spectral signal that is representative of a frequency content of the first ADS signal, a noise processor, configured to provide a noise signal that is representative of a noise level of the first ADS signal, and a rate processor, configured to provide a rate signal that is representative of a rate of change of the first ADS signal. The aircraft health management system also includes a comparator configured to provide a differential signal between the first ADS signal and the second ADS signal, and a prognostic processor configured to determine if the ADS signal is anomalous by comparing values representative of a flight condition signal, the differential signal, and the spectral, noise, and/or rate signals.

Prognostic monitoring of complementary air data system sensors

An aircraft pressure measurement device includes a pressure sensor, a pressure measurement path, a valve, and a fluid port. The pressure measurement path extends between an aircraft skin and the pressure sensor, and the valve is positioned within the pressure measurement path between the aircraft skin and the pressure sensor. The valve is configured to regulate airflow through the pressure measurement path, and the fluid port is configured to allow a pressurized fluid into the pressure measurement path to clear the pressure measurement path of debris. The improved pressure measurement device allows the aircraft to automatically clear debris from the pressure measurement path both during flight and while on the ground, removing the need for manual cleaning processes.

An air data system for an aircraft includes a multi-function probe (MFP) and an inertial reference unit (IRU). The MFP is positioned to sense a pressure of airflow about an exterior of the aircraft. A first electronics channel of the MFP is electrically coupled to the IRU to generate air data parameter outputs based on the pressure sensed by the MFP and inertial data sensed by the IRU.

A system and method of augmenting an existing air data system includes a multi-function probe (MFP) having a portion extending into an oncoming airflow about an exterior of an aircraft. A plurality of pressure sensing ports in the portion includes at least first and second static pressure ports. A first electronics channel of the MFP includes pressure sensors communicating with the first and second static pressure ports and is configured to determine first and second altitude values based on sensed static pressures at the first and second static pressure ports, respectively, that are independent of the existing air data system.

Architecture for providing enhanced altitude functionality to aircraft air data system

A system and method for an aircraft includes a low profile pneumatic sensing system and an acoustic sensing system. The low profile pneumatic sensing system includes a pneumatic sensor positioned to sense first sensed data of an airflow about an exterior of the aircraft and does not extend beyond a boundary layer of the aircraft. The first sensed data is used to determine first air data parameters. The acoustic sensing system is configured to emit acoustic signals about the exterior of the aircraft and sense the acoustic signals as second sensed data. The second sensed data is used to determine second air data parameters.

Low profile air data system architecture

A device for use in a leak check test of an air data system includes a device body, an opening extending into the device body with the opening being configured to allow a probe to be at least partially inserted into the opening, and walls surrounding the opening with the walls being situated to seal a port in the probe such that air is prevented from flowing into or out of the port while the probe is inserted into the opening. A method of performing a leak check test includes covering the port with the device to seal the port, heating air within a gas path in the air data system, measuring the change in pressure of the air resulting from an increase in temperature of the air, and determining whether the air data system is sealed depending on the change in pressure of the air.

A system includes an air data computer (ADC) having a single pneumatic port for receiving a pneumatic input, a plurality of electrical inputs for receiving one or more electrical signals, and an output. The ADC can transmit, via the output, air data parameters based on the received pneumatic input and the received one or more electrical signals. In a further example embodiment, the system includes a first pressure sensing probe discrete from the ADC and a pneumatic connection joining a pressure sensing port of the first probe to the pneumatic input of the ADC. Second and third pressure sensing probes pneumatically coupled to respective pressure modules, which output electrical signals to the ADC, the electrical signals being representative of pressures sensed by the second and third pressure sensing probes, respectively.

Apparatus and associated methods relate to determining altitude of an aircraft during flight based on properties of vortex shedding. A vortex-shedding projection is projected into the airstream adjacent to the exterior surface of the aircraft so as to cause vortex-shedding turbulence of the airstream. One or more downstream sound-pressure detectors, which are attached to the exterior surface of the aircraft downstream from the vortex-shedding projection, detect(s) a vortex-shedding frequency f of the vortex-shedding turbulence caused by the vortex-shedding projection. A processor determines the altitude of the aircraft based, at least in part, on the vortex-shedding frequency f of the vortex-shedding turbulence as detected by the one or more downstream sound-pressure detectors.
